Hi,
Basically I think I’ve decided on a name, Lottie. My only problem is that people have commented that it’s a nickname and not a ‘real name’ Ive come across the spelling Lotte which I feel looks fore like a ‘whole’ name, but my bf says it is pronounced differently. What do you think? How would you pronounce Lotte?

Lotte is my cousin it's a pretty standard name in Denmark. I would agree with Lott-eh pronunciation though some would say how I say it would be their phonetic Lott-uh

It's a ok name I think it would be hard to live with in the UK and would likely for for Carlotta as suggested already. I do t like Hattie it reminds me of a hat and who wants to be called that

PissOffStayAtHomeDogMum · 03/06/2020 21:46

Ottilie (correctly pronounced Ott-EE-lee-ah, not all this Otterly rubbish) was the most common name for girls registered in the Daily Telegraph's birth announcements in 2019. Make of that what you will, OP.

As Math says, I think (H)ottie as a nickname might be inadvisable.

Hattie and Lott(i)e are both nice.

Ninkanink · 03/06/2020 18:00

Ottie is rather ugly...Plus Ottie the otter, Ottie the snotty, etc etc.

If you go for Ottilie then the nickname should surely be Tilly.

This thread reminded me of this:

mathanxiety · 03/06/2020 17:51

Ottie is a terrible nickname for a girl. It's one letter short of Hottie. Please rethink.

mathanxiety · 03/06/2020 17:49

Hattie is much nicer. I would use Harriet on the birth cert.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 03/06/2020 17:33

Lotte is definitely not pronounced Lotter! Nor is it pronounced Lotta.

It's pronounced as it's written Lott-e. The emphasis is on the first syllable and the e is very short.

Grufallosfriends · 03/06/2020 17:24

Lotter Shock

Why would you add an R?

Mollymalone123 · 03/06/2020 16:22

Hattie I would see as nickname for Harriet.I would pronounce Lotte as Lotter

SJaneS48 · 03/06/2020 16:17

Lotte is pronounced Lotta. Nice name!

Grufallosfriends · 03/06/2020 16:14

I actually prefer Ottilia. Pronounced Ot ee lee a.

Grufallosfriends · 03/06/2020 15:47

Lotte is Lott-eh in German and Lot in French

Ottilie is Ot-ee-lee-eh in German and Ott ee lee in French.

English speakers have the choice of either as they're not English names.

lottiegarbanzo · 03/06/2020 15:33

Yes, I've met a few Ottilies. OH-till-ee.

SeasonFinale · 03/06/2020 13:40

Ottilie in English is pronounced O- till- ee with the O pronounced as in Hot. Same emphasis on all 3 syllables.

Pippilangstrumpfie · 03/06/2020 13:26

Ottilie is Ott EE lee eh. 4 syllables.

lottiegarbanzo · 03/06/2020 10:41

Lotte = lott-a or lott-uh and I think it's a German name.

You could use Charlotte but call her Lottie from the start. It's such a different sounding name and she will be a completely different person from your friend.

Hattie is nice but is a nickname. Harriet.

Hattie by itself sounds a bit 'try hard' to me, like Effie. Like someone's tryng to win a competition for most uncommon (in both senses) Edwardian-inspired name.

captainraymondholt · 03/06/2020 10:30

I'd pn it Lotta.
Lottie is a much better spelling.
I prefer Hattie though.

Scruffyoak · 02/06/2020 22:25

Lottie or lettie is also a nn for violet that I have heard.

JuneJuly · 02/06/2020 20:52

Ottilie could get shortened to Ottie or Tilly.

SimpleKindofLife · 02/06/2020 20:48

Ot-ter-lee.

Ottie and Lottie would both be acceptable nn. I like the sound of Lotte - Lot-uh but that spelling just doesn't translate well. Lotter looks weird!

Ohnopoo · 02/06/2020 19:20

I love Lotte. I pronounce it ‘Lott-uh’ with the ‘uh’being quite soft

Tiletiletile1 · 02/06/2020 19:17

I know a toddler Ottilie and she gets called Ottie. Very cute.

BertieBotts · 02/06/2020 19:16

It's pronounced like Lotta.

To be honest a vowel after a double consonant like that doesn't make the long vowel sound in English, even though a single e can, it tends to be after a single consonant or blend like me, she, he, be. So I would think it a very strange spelling for the pronunciation Lottie. Just call her Lottie if you like it!

june2007 · 02/06/2020 19:13

Ot-I-lie is how I would prenounce that. Ottie is kind of cute.

june2007 · 02/06/2020 19:12

Lot is how I would prenounce it.
