Context;
DH is Jewish, I’m not. Looking at Hebrew names that are distinctive without being completely out there 👍

Phonetic pronunciation is “shosh-AH-nah“.
Sounds like “shoh-shanna”

Try not to be too mean as I really like this one!🤣

It's a lovely name! One of the service leaders at my synagogue is a Shoshana (one n) and her nickname is Shosh. She's fab and the name fits her really well. Lots of good nickname options!

Ritascornershop · 14/07/2020 02:27

It could be that when she’s born she’ll either suit it to a t or you’ll suddenly see her as an Elisheva or a Leat.

BabyBrainJane · 14/07/2020 01:43

Thanks for all these comments by the way!

She’ll probably be Shoshie when she’s small (Hubs started saying this first and he didn’t actually know that I was “Charshie” when I was little!!!)
I can imagine her being a teenager/grown up and using Shana or her full name 😊

We want to make sure she has a good alternative in her middle name just in case she hates it lol!

My problem is that I really like “Shoshanna” but I don’t feel completely convinced. I don’t like any other name as much and I can’t think of her kicking away in there with any other name 😅

Difficult business this naming lark!!

People usually shorten it to Shoshe (long o sound) and Shoshone which I think is nice. We know quite a few (in Canada) & no-one bats an eye. I’m surprised people are being off about it given how multicultural Britain is now.

drigon · 13/07/2020 02:07

Nice. Also like Miriam/ Miri.

Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou · 13/07/2020 02:01

People would call her Shosh, which doesn’t sound great...

DramaAlpaca · 13/07/2020 00:51

I'm sorry, but to me that name has a very unattractive sound.

wizzler · 12/07/2020 19:39

I've not heard it before but I really like it

KetoWinnie · 12/07/2020 16:51

Drunk person mangling Susannah

What about Sasha or Susie for everyday use?

Ritascornershop · 12/07/2020 16:47

It’s lovely and the nicknames for it are pretty too. Some people have suggested Rivka, but I think that’s a bit old ladyish?

How about;
Esther
Naomi
Noa
Elisheva
Malka
Tova
Dalit

MissMarplesHandbag · 12/07/2020 16:34

It’s a gorgeous name Op.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/07/2020 16:17

It sounds like a toddler trying to say Suzannah

Bubblebu · 12/07/2020 15:09

I had a school friend called this. She did not tell me it was mis pronounced frequently.

She pronounced it "Shosh" "arna" (the second bit in the same way as per the main character in Frozen)

MarkCorriganForPrimeMinister · 07/06/2020 14:52

Loved it ever since Girls, I think it’s beautiful!

wonkytonkwoman · 06/06/2020 15:28

A friend of mine named his daughter this. I think it's lovely. They call here Shoshi for short.

Pemba · 06/06/2020 15:24

It's a beautiful name, not sure why it's not more popular and well known.

Comefromaway · 05/06/2020 20:19

Makes me think of Shoshana Bean a fantastic musical theatre singer/actress.

Tutina02 · 05/06/2020 20:14

Beautiful. I’m Jewish and I know a few. I think you should go with what you like!
A few more gorgeous ones are
Ester
Yael
Miriam
Tamar
Shira
Alma

spiderlight · 05/06/2020 16:14

It's my lovely, lovely sister-in-law's name and it suits her beautifully - she's a soft, graceful, gentle soul. She's usually known as Shosh but pronounces her full name as Shosh-O-nah rather than Shosh-AH-nah. She's Australian, if that makes any difference.

covidco · 05/06/2020 15:37

But I also like Naamah and Rivka. Hebrew names are lovely.

covidco · 05/06/2020 15:34

I love it and would totally have used it if I'd had even a whiff of a Jewish connection. But I don't.

Edenember · 05/06/2020 10:57

@BabyBrainJane oh I love Norah too.

Edenember · 05/06/2020 10:15

@BabyBrainJane I’m personally not keen but it just comes down to personal taste - I find it quite unwieldy to say. Hebrew girls names I love are Aphra and Orpah purely based on the sound, but Orpah as you will know although barely mentioned has negative associations in the Bible. Don’t worry about the ignorant comments on here regarding it sounding made up etc, use it if you love it.

DateLoaf · 04/06/2020 20:42

I think it’s lovely but forgot to say before, I also really like the NN Shana, so maybe the alternative spelling Shoshana (rather than the double ‘n‘ spelling in the OP) would lend itself to that more? It’s a beautiful sounding and beautiful meaning flower name. I hope you go for it OP.

Northernsoullover · 02/06/2020 18:12

It reminds me of a dodgy ventriloquist saying 'sausages'
