Love Victoria but hate Vicky

Is there anyway around to not letting a full name turn into a nickname. I absolutely adore Victoria and has always been on my top 5 yet I can't stand the nickname Vicky.

Could we possibly avoid Victoria turning into Vicky or is it bound to happen no matter what?

My sister was always Victoria growing up, never shortened. Occasionally gets Vic now but only rarely.

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 22/05/2021 17:16

I know a Victoria called Kiki

Stickytreacle · 22/05/2021 17:03

My daughter is a Victoria, never ever Vicky and we use Toria as a shortened version at home. She's in her thirties and it's never been an issue.

TatianaBis · 22/05/2021 16:53

I can’t stand Vicky either.

Like Vita though.

rc22 · 22/05/2021 16:51

I'm Elizabeth and my family always called me my full name. I also tried to insist on my full name throughout primary school but people insisted on calling me Liz or Lizzie anyway. In the end Liz stuck and that's what I'm pretty exclusively known as now!

clto2021 · 20/05/2021 22:09

My sister is called Victoria. She has never ever been called Vicky. She is Victoria professionally and tends to be called Vick by close friends and family.

FurrySlipperBoots · 20/05/2021 22:03

Or if you like the 'oria' sound, maybe 'Aurora'.

FurrySlipperBoots · 20/05/2021 22:02

I'm a Vicky. My brother called me Toria, my dad Victoria Plum, but yeah, basically always Vicky. I would definitely avoid the name Victoria if you really don't care for any of the shortened versions!

How about another V name? Violet is pretty, or Verity?

partyatthepalace · 20/05/2021 21:39

Madness to use Victoria if you hate Vicky.

ILoveShula · 20/05/2021 20:14

I know a Victoria who was always Vic then as an adult is Vicky. Victoria could be Vita.

muckypawz · 20/05/2021 09:37

I know I'm a year late but had to comment.. I have the opposite problem lol. my name is Vicki and throughout my life some people including teachers have called me Victoria which I really hated. i don't mind Vic but hate it spelt Vicky :( :)

Gunpowder · 10/06/2020 07:25

I know a Tor, a Vicky, a Vixen and even a Plum!

I like Vita.

tellmetellmerightnow · 10/06/2020 07:19

If you dislike Vicky that much don't use Victoria.

I'm a Victoria and from about 11 I went by Vicky. I also tried every single spelling for a few months at a time, Vicki, Vickie etc. I was only ever called Victoria at home and when my friends called and asked for Vicky my dad used to say sorry she doesn't live here. He hated the nn that much. It still stuck as I didn't want Victoria and once your dd is older you'll have no say apart from with close family.

I do know a Victoria who refuses to answer anything apart from her full name. But you don't know what your child will prefer.

FWIW i'd love to go by Victoria now and only really get vic now but I feel it's too hard to get everybody to change after all these years!

CoalCraft · 10/06/2020 06:59

My mother has a long name similar to Victoria. Her own mother never, ever shortened it, but even so she has been called the equivalent of Vick by everyone else since forever.

I think Vicky or Tory are inevitable unfortunately

mintchick · 10/06/2020 06:56

I'm a Victoria. My family/friends have never called me anything but Victoria. My mum wouldn't dream of anything but my proper name. Work wise I'm Vix (to simplify things because there's two Victoria's). But at school, yes I got Vicky. Which both me and my parents also hated. Vicky was never mentioned again as I have no friends from school who I am in touch with so it hasnt been a problem anyone calling me Vicky. I occasionally get Vic which I don't mind. But to confuse things further, I married a Victor! Grin

Hate to break this to you, but I'm a Victoria, called Vicky.
I felt actual rage whenever my parents called me Victoria. My sister had a shortened name they called her by, but always insisted on calling me by my full name and I felt so hard done by 🤣
To this day, I refuse to answer to the name Victoria

EngagedAgain · 03/06/2020 09:02

Also, if it's one of your top five, why not choose one of the others instead.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 02/06/2020 23:48

I know a vicky who wishes she was Victoria.
And a Victoria who is tora. Which I love.
And when I was growing up, my friend had twin sisters rebecca and Victoria

Becky and vicky.
Tora came from a sibling trying to say Victoria and stuck

EngagedAgain · 02/06/2020 22:08

Anyone with any sense will call her Victoria if that's what SHE wants. You have no way of knowing if she will want Vicky eventually.

Veh1970 · 02/06/2020 22:02

HmmBiscuit

Wagamamas · 02/06/2020 21:58

Vix and vicki

Goingalittlecrazy · 02/06/2020 21:55

@Chocolatecake12

Why feel insulted? I'm Victoria and feel no way about the fact that some MN users don't like the name. The still popularity of the name being used to this day proves otherwise, and it being a historical name its really quite impressive it is still used.

It might be that i actually think its abit of a rubbish name why im none offended, but really, the fact that some users don't like the name is hardly and insult to take to heart! X

Mucklowe · 02/06/2020 15:47

Vita

Something20 · 02/06/2020 15:31

I know a Victoria that goes by Toria which I think sounds lovely 😊
