I live Dorothea , Matilda and Tabitha. The link with your mother makes Dorothea perfect for me .

DoctorBambino · 01/06/2020 11:48

Dorothea - it's ok and I like your link to the name so think it's a lovely choice
Matilda - I like it but theres something harsh sounding about the t sound
Tabitha - cat name
Juno - like it
Marigold (nn Goldie) - dont like it
Aster - like it
Aphra - its ok
Ivy - not keen
Ione - nope
Olive - no

17caterpillars1mouse · 31/05/2020 20:48

Dorothea - love it, I wanted it for dds middle name but had to compromise on Dorothy instead

Matilda - I like it as a middle name, but it's way too popular in my area for me. I know loads under 5

Tabitha - one Matilda I know has a sister called Tabitha :) I'm not a fan personally, it reminds me of cats (as does Felix). I do love Talitha though which obviously is very similar, nn Tallie

Juno - seems faddy to me

Marigold (nn Goldie) - love Marigold. Not so keen on Goldie. Would you consider Gloria? Or Gloriana? I feel they have the same vibe

Aster - not a fan

Aphra - never heard of it but not a fan

Ivy - pretty but I'm hearing it more and more

Ione - prefer Iona. Ione looks a bit incomplete. Joan as a similar style?

Olive - love it. It would be a contender if I had another girl

3LittleMonkeyz · 31/05/2020 18:45

Don't like Dorothea but do like Dorothy and Thea
Matilda I love
Tabitha is a cats name
Juno is the pregnant teenager from the movie, can't get past it sorry
Marigold (nn Goldie) sounds like a middle aged chain smoker (sorry!)
Aster sounds like Astrid and pasta mixed together. I like Ester and Astrid though.
Aphra? I might prefer Aphrodite
Ivy i love
I wish I could have another baby just to name her Ione. Love love love this.
Olive is nice too

GoulashSoup · 31/05/2020 18:32

I really like Juno, Olive and Aster. To me they are all quite strong and not too girly with nature connotations.

I’m afraid I’m not fond of Dorothea but if you love it then use it. It is you that will be using the name.

Mesmeri · 31/05/2020 18:26

Dorothea is cool. People in MN not being keen is a good omen, in my opinion. Do you like all the shortenings?
D / Dee / Deedee
Dorrie
Thea

SpeedofaSloth · 31/05/2020 18:22

Esther is much nicer.

AragornsManlyStubble · 31/05/2020 18:20

I have a family member named Aster, it’s not to my taste but pretty enough.

I like Tabitha and Marigold but Dorothea is the favourite for me!

AnnaSW1 · 31/05/2020 18:04

I like Matilda and Tabitha. Not the rest

Crabbo · 31/05/2020 17:54

If you really want Dorothea choose Dorothea - who cares what a random selection of internet users think, she’s your baby.

Pemba · 31/05/2020 17:01

Well you clearly have the best taste in your family, plus you're the one actually growing the child in your body, so you should get to choose! Dorothea it is!

(And seriously, your DDs shouldn't really get a vote. They might have their own chance when they're adults. Plus there are always pets/dolls/cuddly toys to name!)

Pleasenodont · 31/05/2020 14:41

Ivy, Olive and Matilda are beautiful. The others, not so much.

Angel2702 · 31/05/2020 14:02

I like most of those
Matilda
Tabitha
Marigold
Ivy
Olive

A few of those were on my list 9 years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter.

Primrose would go well with that list.

Pemba · 31/05/2020 13:55

I really like Dorothea (also a Middlemarch fan!). Quite like Aphra too. Aster is quite nice, although prefer the spelling Asta, (Scandinavian name), otherwise it is too surname-y. But then unfortunate closeness to Asda, as a pp said. Hmmm...

My least favourite is Olive. I know it is becoming popular now, but to me it will always be 1) edible item in a jar /salad, 2) Popeye's girlfriend. Such a dowdy name. Funny really, as Olivia is so lovely (though overused).

Strugglingtodomybest · 31/05/2020 13:43

Marigold (nn Goldie) - not keen. Really don't like Goldie as a nn. Sounds like a Labrador. off Blue Peter!

Strugglingtodomybest · 31/05/2020 13:40

Dorothea- I really like this
Matilda - ok
Tabitha - a cat
Juno - pregnant teenager
Marigold (nn Goldie) - No no no. (Goldie Looking Chain Grin. Guns don't kill people, rappers do!)
Aster - makes me think of hotels
Aphra - haven't heard this name before
Ivy - ok
Ione - no
Olive - ok

PastaBolognaise · 31/05/2020 13:28

Quite marmite names then! I think Ivy and Olive seem the most popular with you guys.

I really want Dorothea...

Chewbecca · 31/05/2020 11:39

Dorothea - nice
Matilda - nice, popular if that bothers you
Tabitha - ditto Matilda
Juno - no
Marigold (nn Goldie) - yes to Marigold, no to Goldie
Aster - no
Aphra - no
Ivy - yes, quite ‘now’
Ione - no due to pronunciation difficulties
Olive - yes

theseriousmoonlight · 31/05/2020 11:29

I really like Aster. It was on my list for dd2.
Olive is cool too.

In fact, all your names are lovely imo.

MikeUniformMike · 31/05/2020 11:22

Dorothea - don't like it, Dorothy is much nicer
Matilda - too popular
Tabitha - not keen
Juno - no
Marigold (nn Goldie) - no
Aster - no
Aphra - not sure
Ivy - dislike it
Ione - is it I-owny or I own? - no
Olive - no

LetItGoHome · 31/05/2020 10:17

Marigold is the best by far. I Love it 😍

captainraymondholt · 31/05/2020 09:39

Dorothea - I absolutely love this. Thea is an adorable NN.
Matilda - I like this but it's super popular
Tabitha - I love this too. I'd struggle to pick between this and Thea.
Juno - it's ok, I know a few little ones but I don't love it.
Marigold (nn Goldie) - not keen. Really don't like Goldie as a nn. Sounds like a Labrador.
Aster - don't like at all
Aphra - don't like at all
Ivy - I really like it but I know a lot of small Ivys
Ione - I really like this but people do struggle to pn it. (I know someone called this)
Olive - ok. Not so pretty.

Dorothea or Tabitha would be my favourites.

Mucklowe · 31/05/2020 08:48

Dorothea - old lady, or German pen friend from 1993
Matilda - prissy
Tabitha - ugly "bith" sound
Juno - try-hard
Marigold (nn Goldie) - dreadful
Aster - nice
Aphra - try-hard
Ivy - spooky
Ione - just a random selection of sounds
Olive - why name a child after a bitter salty thing?

autumngold6 · 31/05/2020 06:53

Matilda

CoffeeRunner · 31/05/2020 06:34

Ivy is lovely.
Tabitha is fine (I quite like the nn Tabby).

The rest are either pet names (Goldie?) or just really not very nice.
