Partners' bizarre opinions

SpecialKakapo · 28/05/2020 11:26

Talking over baby names with OH.

According to him: Alice is "too posh" Confused - my dirt poor great grandma was Alice so that makes no sense to me!

Lorna and Hazel (which I really like and hoped he would too) are "too not posh" - wtaf?? Confused

Anyway, just wondering if other people's partners have similar odd opinions..?

And please note - this is intended to be LIGHT-HEARTED! To any parents of Alices/Lornas/Hazels - I think your children have really nice names and my partner is bonkers!

I more or less agree with his comments

Carouselfish · 28/05/2020 23:28

Agree with your DP about Hazel. It's very old cockney washerwoman, like Mabel.

My DP is refusing to contribute to name ideas as we don't know the gender and he doesn't want to waste (his time? his enthusiasm? What?) on finding ones he likes in case he doesn't get to use them. Illogical and infuriating.

Tillygetsit · 28/05/2020 22:42

My dh liked the name Xerxes. I said I'd change his name to it and he said that in that case, he'd need a cape. 🙄

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 28/05/2020 22:07

Alice is not posh. None of the Alice's I know are even remotely posh.
Ex wanted to call DS1 Spike. DS has told me he's glad I said no Grin

My brothers DC are Oliver, Abigail and Alice
So they are similar levels of 'posh' imo. Which means to say they are classless. Timeless. Classic.

CaffiSaliMali · 28/05/2020 22:00

I actually really like Douglas. I have a great Uncle Douglas. All of his siblings have really Welsh names, like Llyr and Idris, except for Douglas.

Not a big fan of Susan, but Susanna is lovely.

MikeUniformMike · 28/05/2020 21:07

I really like the name Susan but know too many nasty Sues.

I love the name Michael.

The looking for an uncommon name threads seem to attract names that are likely to be far from underused.

Spied · 28/05/2020 20:44

Anna was a no-go because of Frozen.

Spied · 28/05/2020 20:42

Dp said no to my offerings of Sebastian and Aidan as they were too posh. As was Luke.
His offering was Michael.
DS is not called Michael.

I put forward Grace for DD but apparently this was too boring and Carmen- which is apparently the name of a large smelly girl he knew at primary school- so that was a no go too.

bridgetreilly · 28/05/2020 20:33

And yet people are always on here looking for uncommon names that there won't be five others in the class. Susan and Douglas are perfect.

bridgetreilly · 28/05/2020 20:32

To be fair to him, Home and Away is one of my first thoughts on the name Ailsa.

MikeUniformMike · 28/05/2020 19:45

Myfanwy is not used much.
It's not awful, but I wouldn't use it. It would become Myfanny, Miffanway, etc.

Buddug is lovely. I quite like Boudicca.

Oliver and Alice names are fairly classless. Georgiana is just too much for me .

I think of Sebastian as a bit downmarket because it has become popular fairly recently, as has Jenson. Strange that.

Addler · 28/05/2020 18:55

DP's top picks were Susan and Douglas. I don't know what decade he thinks this baby will be born in.

whatausername · 28/05/2020 18:01

Shame - Myfanwy sounds so soft and pretty in a Welsh accent. I do see the problem using it elsewhere though. Grin

CaffiSaliMali · 28/05/2020 17:30

Ha, Genghis is the kind of name my Dad would like (he made a series of very out there suggestions for me (think Boudicca) at which point Mam took over and named me, thankfully!)

There is a Welsh version of Boudicca, Buddug, but even Mam could see that wouldn't work in England!

Dad vetoed Myfanwy for me but otherwise let Mam choose.

CaffiSaliMali · 28/05/2020 17:23

It's not cultural appropriation for a Scottish person to use a Scottish name in England.

My Mam's Welsh and gave me a Welsh name in England. My DH did ponder whether it would be cultural appropriation for me to use a Welsh name but we concluded it wouldn't be.

I really don't think Alice is posh. Alys, which is the Welsh version, is on my list and I'm decidedly not posh Grin

I think most classic names don't have strong class associations, isn't that partly why they're popular?

I see names like Thomas, James, Elizabeth and Alice as quite timeless - they could be old/young or posh/not posh.

VirginWestCoast · 28/05/2020 16:56

I had a friend called Oliver at school and remember my parents (and friends' parents) dubbing it a posh boy's name. They are currently struggling over whether the country is increasingly posh or not...

Nothing wrong with the name's OP. Whether a name is posh or not is often pretty arbitrary (Tarquins and Jagos notwithstanding)

whatausername · 28/05/2020 16:45

According to a particular ex:
Sebastian - far too posh
Georgiana - a hell no, not even entertained

But Genghis? Genghis was fiiiiine.

Needless to say I did not have babies with ex.

schoolsoutforcovid · 28/05/2020 16:40

Raffaelo is a chocolate

MikeUniformMike · 28/05/2020 14:54

Isn't there a chocolate called something a bit like that

momsdish.com/recipe/372/ferrero-raffaello-cake-recipe

Mucklowe · 28/05/2020 14:48

My DH has vetoed my favourite name, Raphaella, because "it sounds like a brand of cakes" Hmm

peperethecat · 28/05/2020 14:12

Anna is one of my favourites, but I agree I think all the names you've just listed are completely normal and I wouldn't say any of them were particularly posh or the opposite. They're all pretty much the same level of posh in my opinion.

SpecialKakapo · 28/05/2020 14:02

I know Mike!

OP posts:
SpecialKakapo · 28/05/2020 14:02

Ha! DP is Scottish but won't use an overtly Scottish name as the child will grow up in England and it would therefore be "cultural appropriation" Hmm

@peperethecat ah, sorry, I misunderstood. Names like Sophie, Laura, Anna, Abigail.. perfectly nice normal names, I just don't understand why they're any more or less "posh" than Lorna, Hazel or Alice Confused

It was meant in jest OP.

I think SweatyAmy's OH is worse, and suggest you look for names you both like, and as it's you giving birth, you get to make the decision.

SweatyAmy · 28/05/2020 13:30

Mine has very strong opinions on not using names from other cultures.

So no Alice, Sophie or Louis on the grounds we're not French... most biblical names ruled out on grounds they are of Greek/Hebrew etc. origin.

Isabelle is acceptable, however, as he really likes it, as are Isabella and Juliette, but not Isabel or Juliet.

He thinks names like Edward and Henry are too posh to use, but I know loads of non-posh people whose DC have these names. For me they are timeless and classless names.

The only truly 'English' names I can come up with are Aethelfaed type names. Our children will love us Grin
