Thoughts on Gregor?

For DS number three - what do you associate with this name?

Alternatives are Callum, Rory or Robin in that order of preference.

... I had forgotten how stressful I find name picking!

@Copperas

Gregor Vorbarra for those who read Vorkosigan
Same here Smile

It’s a lovely name.

Mrsjayy · 28/05/2020 12:03

Aww cute wbeezer Smile

Wbeezer · 28/05/2020 11:56

My first wee proper friends were called Gregor and Fraser so they have nice associations for me.

CatkinToadflax · 28/05/2020 10:39

I think Gregor is the man who turns into a cockroach in Metamorphosis?

Yes! Gregor Samsa is exactly who I thought of too!

Mrsjayy · 28/05/2020 10:17

Oh I don't like Fraser either.

Wbeezer · 28/05/2020 10:14

Oh well, just shows you shouldn't generalise, but I let myself sometimes on Mumsnet when it's an uncontroversial subject! I do think the emphasis is slightly different when Scottish people say it, avoiding the main emphasis on the "egg" sound that a PP didn't like. I think it sounds manly rather than harsh... And yes i have been wandering around in my kitchen muttering Gregor in different accents! Lockdown is doing strange things to me!
I think Fraser has a similar vibe?

Mrsjayy · 28/05/2020 09:05

@nasalspray

I think theres going to be be a Scotland/England divide on this

I'm Scottish and have always disliked Gregor. It's a really harsh/hard sound.

Im also Scottish and find it is quite harsh.
TeeBee · 28/05/2020 09:03

Love it! Very cute for a little boy.

Mrsjayy · 28/05/2020 09:02

Oo Struan is lovely I liked Struan and Keir If I had boys.

FizzyGreenWater · 28/05/2020 08:58

It’s ok. It’s one of that crop of names and it wouldn’t be the one I chose from them. Much prefer Struan. Of yours I love Rory, think Callum is a bit naff now!

I’d be most likely to go more retro and go for Malcolm which I love, or Roderick (Roddy is a brilliant alternative to Rory).

Or go north - Magnus, Thorfinn.

I don't Gregor sounds "nice" Dds had a couple of Greg's in her school year and I like Greg not sure the difference anyway from your list I prefer Rory.

Chatons · 28/05/2020 08:45

“Of course, there was Old Gregor,
and his son, Young Gregor. Young Gregor's son was older than Old Gregor. Nobody could figure out how that happened.“

Love and Death, 1975.

Emmapeeler1 · 28/05/2020 08:40

I knew quite a cool Gregor as a teen. I think it sounds best with a Scottish accent, though he didn't have one. I like Greg.

whatshappeninginthisworld · 28/05/2020 08:33

Sorry don't like Gregor at all. Such a ordinary Russian name.
I like Robin.

Mucklowe · 28/05/2020 08:27

Gregor puts me in mind of an old Ukrainian alcoholic.

diddlediddle · 27/05/2020 22:54

Also I know a girl called Adair, but it is a nice name

diddlediddle · 27/05/2020 22:53

Gregory is quite nice, better than Gregor.

Callum is a naughty boy name.

Rory is nice.

Robin is a bit wet.

Karlkennedyslovechild · 27/05/2020 22:35

I think Gregor is the man who turns into a cockroach in Metamorphosis? That’s what I think of. I do like Greg or Gregory better. Really like Rory and Robin.

finallychangedmyusername · 27/05/2020 22:29

I like Gregor (Gregory too). It sounds rugged, great in a Scottish accent.

Not sure I have any associations. I'd probably expect some sort of connection to Scotland, but that's it. I've never met a Gregor.

FWIW I also like Callum, Rory and Robin.

Callum is quite 90s to me (not a bad thing). Rory I love, but currently makes me think of lions (I have a toddler who loves to ROAAAR) Grin
Robin is lovely. It's my favourite form of Robert. I think of Christopher Robin and the bird (again not bad things).

Great shortlist!

Tillygetsit · 27/05/2020 22:29

I really like Gregor and I'm a softie Southerner. I think it's strong. Cute for a sturdy little boy and lovely for an adult.
Due to personal reasons I absolutely detest the name Callum. Have known 2 and both were horrible sneaky shits.

DramaAlpaca · 27/05/2020 22:26

I'm not Scottish and I really like Gregor.

Copperas · 27/05/2020 22:25

Gregor Vorbarra for those who read Vorkosigan

DressingGownofDoom · 27/05/2020 22:21

Gregor Clegane aka the mountain from game of thrones.

Dobbytheelf · 27/05/2020 22:20

As you've asked why people don't like it, Gregor to me feels like it should be followed by 'The ...' so Gregor the Brave, Gregor the Strong, Gregor the Executioner etc. That's why I wouldn't use it but on the other hand I can imagine someone introducing a Gregor to me and my thinking 'I LOVE it!'. I'll pick the splinters out of my bum now...
