What do we think of Aster?

I stumbled on the name Aster the other day. It is a type of flower (like a daisy) but it also the romanised version of the Hebrew name Esther. I also love that it has the same sound as the first female MP to take her seat in the Commons.

What do people think?

I've always thought Aster is a beautiful name, brings to mind old fashioned gardens in books! I never knew what sort of flower it was, just read about them. Some names suggest certain personalities though and I think Aster needs a tall, graceful type which is why I would use it for a book character rather than a child (as I couldn't guarantee producing a tall and graceful child).

It's a colour of yarn I use - stylecraft special dk in acrylic

frenchfancy81 · 28/05/2020 00:23

Terminator

DramaAlpaca · 28/05/2020 00:19

I quite like it.

Ellmau · 28/05/2020 00:17

I like it.

Singingatmidnight · 27/05/2020 16:37

I like it! I would definitely think of the flower and assume a girl.

I also know a little girl called Asta, which I think might be Scandinavian?

TempsPerdu · 27/05/2020 15:55

I like it - I love aster flowers and the meaning ‘star’ and we actually considered it for DD. But in hindsight I’m glad we didn’t choose it as I’m pretty sure it would just end up being confused with Asda by lots of people!

HouseOfSticks · 27/05/2020 15:32

The stepdaughter in Dexter was called Astor. I always liked it though at first i thought she was called Asda.

SnowdropFox · 27/05/2020 12:20

I like it and would immediately think of the daisy-like flower. So definitely feminine to me.

Coffeecak3 · 27/05/2020 12:12

I like it.
As for people saying ass or asta la vista if they're so minded they'll do it with any name.

Myneighboursnorlax · 27/05/2020 12:09

I think housing association also

wishing3 · 27/05/2020 12:07

I think it’s a good find-unusual but classy! I don’t think knit matters if people might assume a boy’s name initially.

Weclapclapclapclapclaptogether · 27/05/2020 11:23

Prefer Astrid

herecomesgeralt · 27/05/2020 10:58

I prefer Esther. Would have thought Aster was a boy

ScarletFever · 27/05/2020 08:47

@4amWitchingHour

I like Aster for a girl, wouldn't think of the Terminator reference at all (without meaning to offend, I think you might have to be of a certain age for that to be a relevant reference).

I thought of Lady Astor too OP, and the daisy link is sweet.

How very dare you!?!?!? 😂😂😂😂
c1JSU · 27/05/2020 08:35

Aster is a housing association in the South West.

wendywoopywoo222 · 27/05/2020 08:33

It's the name of our local
Housing association so I wouldn't use it.

ChessieFL · 27/05/2020 08:32

I thought boy’s name too

Roselilly36 · 27/05/2020 08:31

I like it. But wondering if will be a name that will constantly need correcting, if misheard for Esther/Hester. Sounds a girls name to me, not many DS are named with floral connections. I also like the name Azelea too for a girl.

Queenoftheashes · 27/05/2020 08:19

I like it. Makes me think of the Astor family which I only heard of watching Titanic.

Batqueen · 27/05/2020 08:18

I think of the little girl on Dexter but she spelt it Astor

bogfi · 27/05/2020 08:15

Astrid?

GrimmsFairytales · 27/05/2020 08:14

I'm another who automatically thought La vista baby, then I thought of the flower, and finally asteroid.

Not great, and if I encountered the name in real life I would also think it belonged to a boy / man.

BigusBumus · 27/05/2020 08:13

I would think of Aster as a boys name. Like Acer or Alister. Not many (any?) girls names end in -er.
