sofia vs jemima

Obviously love them both, but Jemima's just got this public school vibe that gives Sofia the edge as it blends in better if you get me? Like Sofia also travels better and works in America - Jemima doesn't quite so well apparently - and other cultures too. However, Sofia is more popular but in certain circles Jemima can be more so. Popularity doesn't matter that much though. Also Jemima has nn potential whereas Sofia has Sof which is OK but will she be 'Sofia with an F' and get mixed up spelling wise - really annoying? I just don't like how Sophia looks tbh. If anyone has any thoughts I'd love to hear them.

Sofia is lovely. I love this Italian spelling.

Jemima is Jemima Puddleduck for me! Also travels less well.

Jemima is horrid. Sorry Confused

Sofia is nice but Sophia looks better. But I prefer Sophie above all of them.

OnlyToWin · 23/05/2020 12:33

@Mucklowe thanks for explaining. I had never heard of that before.

Mucklowe · 23/05/2020 12:30

What is the issue with Jemima and America?

Aunt Jemima is a racist term there.

Mucklowe · 23/05/2020 12:30

Sofia by a mile. Jemima is such an ugly name.

LotusClover · 23/05/2020 12:30

I don't like Jemima at all, it feels very dated to me. Sofia is lovely. I prefer Sophia but I think Sofia works better internationally. It seems like a 50/50 split in England between Sophia and Sofia, so she may have spelling problems but it's not like she'll be the only Sofia in the country or anything.

Sophia is much nicer than Sofia.

I like Jemima. I know one with the nickname puddle though. Apparently it just stuck at school.

Prefer Jemima and I'm from state school

There’s quite a serious “not working quite so well” issue for Jemima in the US. So if likely to live there at all, just avoid totally, don’t worry about “vibes”.

sweetnosugar · 23/05/2020 12:22

I prefer the spelling Sophia, Sofia is a capital city! However there are loads of people named after places so if you like Sofia then go for it. Where I am Sophia is extremely popular.

I do know a sweet little girl in my area called Jemima but since she’s started school she has been given the nn Jem by her friends, which I’m not a fan of, neither is her mum! But the only one I know.

megrichardson · 23/05/2020 12:20

I love Jemima

RusholmeRuffian · 23/05/2020 12:18

Prefer Sofia by a mile.

ArriettyJones · 23/05/2020 12:18

Erm Confused

OnlyToWin · 23/05/2020 12:17

Prefer Jemima - think it is a lovely name.
