Down to 2 girls names, thoughts please!

DD2 is due in a few weeks. DD1 has a Gaelic/Irish name (we are Scottish). Surname will start with Mc. We’re down to Martha or Evelyn, which does everyone prefer? Middle name will likely be violet after a family member.

Martha aways makes me think a bit hard done by as in the Mary and Martha story bit I think Evelyn works better with a Mc surname.

What about Mhairi. I know a lovely Mhairi, pronounced Varie.

I prefer Evelyn.

@catsarebetterthandogs9 I pronounce it Ev-eh-lyn too! I think people count it as an Ever-lyn pronunciation, but you're not alone! There's dozens of us! Dozens!

Now I’m not sure if I like either lol. Pronunciation issues with both. Zara was our third choice.........

I like Martha but so many people pronounce it ‘Marfa’ .. not sure if it’s laziness or they generally cannot pronounce the TH.

My friends dd is Evelyn and it’s never been shortened. They planned to shorten it to Evie but she doesn’t suit it. It’s a lovely name! I don’t like Martha at all.

I prefer Martha because of the inevitable pronunciation issues with Evelyn.

FWIW we have a Mc surname and DS1 has a name beginning with M, I think it sounds great!

Lovely names. With a Mc surname I am also learning towards Evelyn as it's a "ma" "ma" sound.

In my case my Christian name and married surname have exactly the same vowel sounds three times. It's annoying and seems to really confuse people so I have to repeatedly spell it. So I'm biased.

DD is Martha. She gets lovely compliments on her name. I did have to ask MIL to stop calling her "Marf" but she's the only one who ever attempted it, and I wouldn't usually be so finicky but it was awful! I'm not a massive fan of Evelyn, I pronounce that Ev-eh-lyn which nobody else on here seems to do Grin

I love Martha, when I was pregnant I had Martha or Marte on my girls list. The only Evelyns I know are older women so I don't associate it with a child.

Martha. Evelyn has the annoying pronunciation issue and there are loads of them, along with all the Evies, Evas etc.

I only know one Martha - she's 19 and it's never been abbreviated.
