Any thoughts on this unusual Scottish form of Edgar? For a boy.

I don't think it's one of those surnames that really works as a first name- I think of Johnny Adair as well, although anyone from NI will probably have that association. If you use a surname-name you have to be careful to use something that isn't too unusual as a first name, otherwise your DS will sound like a firm of solicitors.

What about Dawson? It's underused imo, I really like it. Reid is also ok, we know a little boy called that and he really suits it.

Red Adair was my first thought but didn't know why I knew that name. I must have absorbed the knowledge without realising because I remember Piper Alpha but was at primary school. I think the same has a bit of dash about it, I like it. Cool.

I'm Irish and my associations are Adare the (lovely) place and oddly Fred Astaire ☺️
It's a pleasant sound and while there are plenty of Irish people in Scotland he's unlikely to hear "Oh there's a place called that" very often!

I'd probably assume he was known by his surname for some reason. I don't dislike it, I've just never come across it as a first name.

I think it might depend on your surname. I definitely wouldn't name a boy Adair Cameron (for example) because I think people would get it the wrong way around.

The village in Ireland called Adare is very nice, if that helps!

Adair's OK. Way better than Edgar anyway.

Makes me think of:

  1. Johnny Adair, the NI loyalist...not a role model whatever way you look at it.
  2. Adare the place in Ireland.

Will that resonate with people outside Ireland though? Doubt it. Putting those associations to one side though I think it's ok. I don't think it's great but I don't hate it either.
