Any thoughts on this unusual Scottish form of Edgar? For a boy.

I know two Adairs in the US. Both are women. Their names were taken from family surnames. I like it.

I came onto this thread to say I didn't like it but actually I think it's rather nice. I think possibly because I am now imagining it in a Scottish accent.

I think one thing to remember about associations is that will only happen the first time people hear it.
Then they will.associate it with your wee boy

We have an Alasdair in the family and it has quite a different sound, I think.
I don't think it matters too much though whether it's a family name or not now, as that tradition isn't so much alive any more.

traditionally in Scotland boys were often given their mother’s maiden name as a first name, which explains why surnames as first names are relatively common.

I’ve never come across anyone with Adair as a first name and would think it was a family surname.

Why not Alasdair?

It definitely is more common as a surname. But I think Scottish names are often both, e.g. Cameron, Douglas, Graham, Fraser, Scott so that doesn't worry me too much. I wouldn't usually consider a "surname" name e.g. Jackson

It’s a common surname in NI, with terrible associations (Johnny Mad Dog Adair as pps have said).

My friend's cousin is Adair, I always heard it as "Dare" before I saw it written down once. Add that to Red Adair and for me, it's a very dashing name. Love it.

It's good to know associations as I think it's so unusual that people will probably associate it with certain things. @OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe thank you! We feel that too.

I’ve never heard it as a first name but I rather like it. Red Adair is my only association, which certainly isn’t negative.

There’s a printing company called Adare so that’s my association - appreciate this won’t be the case for most people though!

Our surname is actually used as a first name so that is something to consider. We're hugely struggling with a boy's name... I've known our girl's name for 15 years!

yes sounds good..At first glance I read Alasdair
agree with on my using it as a first name is you don't have a surname like James or scott
