Emerald - classy or trashy?

Looking for opinions please, we have our boys name selected but struggling to agree on a girls.
DH has suggested Emerald...I actually quite like it and could imagine the nn Eme/Emmy. It would also go with our surname which is only 3 letters.
We know people called Emma and Emily so they're out of the question.
What is everyone's thoughts on it? I've never met one so don't know how it would be perceived.
Many thanks!

nice but she might just go by em and ems because she hates it

CaffiSaliMali · 21/05/2020 11:43

I really like Esmeralda.

Emmeline is much nicer than Emerald.

Natt99 · 21/05/2020 11:41

@NiteFlights that's interesting, I wouldn't have thought as Ruby or Pearl as that. Ruby is also nice but 2 of my friends babies are called that and it seems to be very popular.
Unfortunately I know far too many Emma's being an 80's child.
DH also suggested Opal but reminds me too much of the sweets 😂

Trashy

NiteFlights · 21/05/2020 11:34

FWIW I think Ruby and Pearl (both lovely names) have a traditional working-class feel - which may or may not be something you’d like. Emmeline much posher (personally I prefer Emerald Wink)

Plain old Emma is a lovely name too.

CovidicusRex · 21/05/2020 09:34

It’s definitely not elegant. Not necessarily trashy though.

Natt99 · 21/05/2020 09:23

Thanks everyone, seems a bit of a mixed bag so far. I will add it to the "maybe" list for now.
Emmeline is a great suggestion and an honourable woman to be named after, I'll add that to the list.
I also really like Pearl, that would be my first choice but DH can't get over the necklace associations 😏

trashy

StarryStrawberry · 21/05/2020 09:20

I absolutely love it and have it on the list for my (as yet hypothetical) daughter.

BeMorePacific · 21/05/2020 09:16

I really like Emmy. Not a huge fan of Emerald (sorry). But if you love it, you should go for it xxx

Doubtingmustafa · 21/05/2020 09:12

I think it could be both...depends on the person. It isn’t class associated...not like Crystal or something! You could get a posh Emerald with hippy bohemian posh parents....or you could get a lower class mum naming her daughter Emerald to be “different”.

But it doesn’t strike me as a typically elegant name. Though I do think I like it.

Pinkypink · 21/05/2020 09:04

Love Emmy/Emme
Not a fan of Emerald

Yearcat13 · 21/05/2020 09:03

It's a brand name for an Irish sweet. Delicious they are. But not a name for Ireland, equivalent is naming your child Liquorice Allsorts.

Camparisafari · 21/05/2020 08:59

I think it's gorgeous and am keen to use as a middle name for a future girl.

clayspaniel · 21/05/2020 08:55

I love it. Reminds me of a 1920s flapper and is the birthstone for May. Nice nicknames with it too.

BuffaloCauliflower · 21/05/2020 08:52

I know one who’s a super cool DJ, model, presenter (and also lovely) so to me it’s a cool girl name, or indeed posh girl like Emerald Fennell. I wouldn’t choose it cause it’s not my taste, but I think it’s cool, and infinitely more interesting that insipid Emmie/boring Emily

Orphlids · 21/05/2020 08:52

My friend is named Emerald. She isn’t posh, but she and her family are quirky, bohemian types. When I met her, it would never have occurred to me that her name was “trashy”, because she herself is so clearly not at all trashy. I think if I’d just seen the name, without meeting the woman, I would have been intrigued rather than thought badly of it.

Patienceisvirtuous · 21/05/2020 08:52

Sounds like one of the Barbie cartoon characters.

bridgetreilly · 21/05/2020 08:51

Emerald, Sapphire, Diamond.... I'm sorry, they're all trashy.

Nestlyn · 21/05/2020 08:51

Trashy, sorry. Same as pp above, a character from Dynasty.

ArriettyJones · 21/05/2020 08:49

There was Lady Emerald Cunard, wasn’t there?

Dillybear · 21/05/2020 08:48

Sorry, I think it’s awful! Trashy and doesn’t sound nice. Emmeline has been suggested as an alternative - that’s a lovely name and could also be shortened to Emmy etc.

AnnieCartwright · 21/05/2020 08:45

I immediately pictured a travellers baby in those huge frilly dresses in a frilly pram. Sorry OP.

Schrodingerspeanutbuttersandw · 21/05/2020 08:42

Just a thought if you like the nn, Emmeline?

arickitupyourpompom · 21/05/2020 08:33

I love it
