Emerald - classy or trashy?

Natt99 · 21/05/2020 07:53

Looking for opinions please, we have our boys name selected but struggling to agree on a girls.
DH has suggested Emerald...I actually quite like it and could imagine the nn Eme/Emmy. It would also go with our surname which is only 3 letters.
We know people called Emma and Emily so they're out of the question.
What is everyone's thoughts on it? I've never met one so don't know how it would be perceived.
Many thanks!

I immediately thought 'stripper name' ...sorry!

Pickles89 · 21/05/2020 22:06

I agree with the posters who say it depends how posh you are. If you have A Family Name and a couple of houses, can afford posh private schools and go on several expensive holidays a year you can get away with it. Any more on the normal side of that and it'll make people think 'stripper'.

TheLette · 21/05/2020 21:59

I like it. My mum suggested Emerald Lake for our daughter's name which I thought was really bizarre, but Emerald on its own is nice. Re: poshness - it probably depends on what kind of person you are. If people think of your family as classy, refined etc then it will be fine and probably sound quite posh!

REdReDRE · 21/05/2020 19:43

I'm not a fan and much prefer Emmeline or Emilia.

pilates · 21/05/2020 19:36

Emmeline is gorgeous

bertiebottseveryfalvourbeans · 21/05/2020 18:44

Emerald is a bit on the trashy side unless you live in Mayfair or something, what about Jade?? More upper middle class Grin

sunshineandshowers21 · 21/05/2020 18:37

*she’s. typing and feeding don’t really go well together haha!

sunshineandshowers21 · 21/05/2020 18:35

@Natt99 we use the lean pronunciation. a he’s named after emmeline pankhurst and that’s apparently how her name was pronounced.

17caterpillars1mouse · 21/05/2020 18:19

I really like it. I see it as retro chic. I see Diamond and Crystal as trashy, but not Emerald

KingOfDogShite · 21/05/2020 18:04

Trashtastic

Straysocks · 21/05/2020 18:03

FABULOUS!

Oldandcobwebby · 21/05/2020 18:03

It sounds too drag queen for me. I'm out.

Laaalaaaa · 21/05/2020 18:02

Stripper name.

Lynda07 · 21/05/2020 18:01

It's alright but do remember, an emerald is green. A lot of people don't particularly like green (except in nature), and wouldn't want to be associated with the name for that reason.

Emma and Emily are lovely, so what if other people you know have chosen those names? Most classes at school have several children with the same name, who wants to stand out as something different? However there are plenty of other names you can choose from.

Angela is nice and due a comeback.

Natt99 · 21/05/2020 17:57

@sunshineandshowers21 aww sounds sweet, do you pronounce the "line" like line or lean? I'd be inclined to go with "lean" but know the french way is line

Gemstones are all ... names for dancers.

Sapphire, Ruby, Amethyst, Diamond, all...dancer names.

sunshineandshowers21 · 21/05/2020 17:04

i love the nickname emmy, my daughter’s name is emmeline and we call her emmy. i do like emerald though, it’s pretty and a little unusual.

RingaRosie · 21/05/2020 17:00

There was a journo called Topaz Amoore, who used to do the papers on Sky. Love that name, so striking!

Natt99 · 21/05/2020 16:56

@whatausername I know, it wouldn't be my first association at all! DH went to an all boys school and said it was joked about a lot 🤷🏼‍♀️ shame as it's a lovely name

@Natt99 I didn't know people still even use the term "pearl necklace"!

LittleCabbage · 21/05/2020 16:32

Emmeline is a great idea.
