To feel that you used up your favourite baby name with your first child

Hi all. I’m due with boy #2 at the end of August. Our nearly 3YO is called Arthur. I’ve had so many suggestions on names but I can’t shake the fact that I feel like I’ve already used up my favourite boys name. I know this is completely first world problems but I just knew what our son would be called from very early on. Approaching the final trimester and still clueless. Anyone in the same boat?

I love Edward, Gabriel / Gabe or Wilfred

finallychangedmyusername · 20/05/2020 21:53

Edward and Arthur is fantastic. Would you use a nickname for Edward? Personally I love Ned.

Other suggestions:

Arthur and...

Tobias
Peter
Daniel
Oscar
Douglas
Matthew
Nicholas
Rupert

You ladies are definitely on my wavelength with name ideas. Can’t use felix (good friends DC) or hector (friends dog), Edwin reminds me of edwina curry lol and Rupert is a friends DC. Cedric was what we used to call the ghost in my parents house as kids. Oscar was our dog.

I quite like Elwood but husband is unconvinced. Also like Elroy. Eric is nice too. I love Gideon. Wilbur is also tickling my fancy. Ralph has been vetoed.

I had the opposite problem; DS1’s name was decided as soon as we knew he was a boy, because of a long standing tradition in DH’a family.

With DS2 the world was my oyster- and I had full veto rights as I’d not really had a say in DS1. The pressure was too much! I chose an amazing name (was pleased to see it come up on a “names you love but aren’t brave enough to use” thread! I’m brave!) but was quite upset with my choice briefly postpartum as the pressure was tooo much and I was worried I’d made the wrong choice.

That answers the question but I don’t have any suggestions for Arthur’s sibling I’m afraid... Sebastian? Toran? Rupert? Frederick?

BabyLlamaZen · 20/05/2020 19:31

Cedric
Tristan
Earnest

ZsaZsaMc · 20/05/2020 19:01

BabyLlamaZen · 20/05/2020 18:54

Ronald?

ClementineTangerine · 20/05/2020 14:41

Hector?

Someone I know recently named their baby this and it's really grown on me

mylittleavalon · 20/05/2020 14:29

What about Wilbur if Wilfred is gone? Also loving Gilbert, Rupert at the moment?

ChristmasCarcass · 20/05/2020 13:08

We had the opposite problem - we had loads of girls names and no boys names at all, and then of course we had a boy.

It took us almost the entire six weeks to register his name because we had no idea what to call him (we were still discussing spellings on the way to the register office). So I am praying we have a girl next, because any boy will have to be “Baby”.

waltzingparrot · 20/05/2020 13:06

I like the Arthur and Ed sound. Edward, Edmund, Edwin

Buddy is always going to be a bit out of kilter with old English names but not many people speak their middle name in daily life.

ComeOnGordon · 20/05/2020 13:03

Yes! I had one boys name that I loved and he was that from the second I knew I was having a boy. But with the next one no name ever really stuck and we gave him a name we liked but I never loved it and sometimes still wish I’d named him Sebastian altho that felt a bit pretentious for who we are. It’s not easy naming babies

CiderWithRosy · 20/05/2020 13:03

I like Edward, Charles and Stanley from your list.

I really dislike Hubert and Herbert, they just remind me of pervert (Sorry OP)

PaddingtonsHat · 20/05/2020 13:01

Eric
William
Edmund
Archibald
Walter

Chicchicchicchiclana · 20/05/2020 12:59

Ralph is great.

What about Oscar?

GirlCalledJames · 20/05/2020 12:57

Edmund
Francis
Digby

Blursula · 20/05/2020 12:53

Winston is fab. As is Lawrence, although prefer the Laurence spelling.

Allthebubbles · 20/05/2020 12:23

Also Arthur and Lawrence sound great together.

Allthebubbles · 20/05/2020 12:23

I think Edward is lovely but somehow not great with Buddy, ( Eddy Buddy/ Teddy/ Buddy/ Woody Buddy)
I love Lawrence and I think it sounds great with Buddy.

Chefwifelife · 20/05/2020 12:04

@lizzierayne no we both loved Arthur and nothing came close to it so no change of that!

I have 2 DDs and I used the second as an opportunity to run a name DH had vetoed first time round by him again and it worked! So is there anything you think is 'out't that might not be this time?

Chefwifelife · 20/05/2020 11:57

Thank you all for such lovely replies; I don’t feel so silly now. Arthur’s middle name is Robert after my husband grandad who is no longer with us.

This little boy will have Buddy as a middle name after my brother in law. Surname begins with a J- husband has vetoed a first name with a B as doesn’t want initials as BJ Hmm

I really want an old man name again. Wilfred was our top choice but now Boris has named his son that we don’t feel we can use it as our surname is nearly the same.

The list we currently have:

Edward
Alfred
Albert
Charles
Gilbert
Herbert
Winston
Oswald
Hubert
Chester
Lawrence
Ralph
Stanley

Edward is up the top but it doesn’t feel as less used as Arthur. Name’s we can’t have for Cairo is reasons are George, James, Hugo, Elliot, Isaac.

I think you'd have to choose another old name to go with Arthur, but I understand where you are coming from.
It's so hard to choose the name. I find it really easy to name girls and hard to name boys for some reason.
