Teddy - is this name really that popular?

Post is for a family member.
She’s pregnant with her first and is in love with the name Teddy for a boy.
She doesn’t want Theodore or Edward as she knows a Theo and a Ed. She likes Teddy as it is, cutesy as a baby name then Ted as they get older. So isn’t after alternative suggestions.. for now anyway!
Personally where I live there is no Teddy’s around here or in my children’s schools and she isn’t really aware of popular baby names with it being her first.
We notice that near enough everyone on here says how overly popular it is, but is it really? Do you personally know many, or have a Teddy yourself? Or does it just get suggested a lot to make it seem popular?
Thanks in advance. Flowers

I have a Theodore who I call teddy (Teddy Pom Pom actually!) but everyone else calls him Theo.

CaptainCallisto · 21/05/2020 11:50

I've got an 8 year old Ted (short for Edward). Never came across another until this year, when the school I work at had two Teddys and a Ted (also two Theo's) in its double intake reception class. Seems its popularity is very much on the rise!

@WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat Grin

I have primary age kids. Know over 200 primary kids and not a single Teddy. Know about 12 pre school kids. 1 Teddy.

So I think it may be “up and coming”.

Fluffybat · 20/05/2020 18:05

I like it. I know a Teddy, short for Edward. They let him choose his name as he got older as he was called both Edward and Teddy at home. His birth certificate is Edward.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 20/05/2020 17:57

It was very popular at a picnic a few years ago.

fuckinghellthisshit · 20/05/2020 17:45

I know 4 Teds, 3 Neds and 2 Teddys.

Laidee · 20/05/2020 17:41

I have a 5mo lo and there was a teddy in my antenatal class. I'm assuming he was an Edward as him and his mum attended some of the same baby classes and after about a month his name changed from teddy to Edward 😂🙈

SansaClegane · 20/05/2020 17:23

I have a Theodore nn Teddy who is now 11. When I named him, the name was outside the top 100 and I didn't think it would ever be this popular! I think we have Robbie Williams to blame for that Confused
I wouldn't ever go with just 'Teddy' with no backup. Mine wants to be called Theo now that he'll move to secondary. Plus there's shit tons of dogs called Teddy now! Mostly tiny fluffy ones.

TheGirlWhoLived · 20/05/2020 17:17

Saying that though, I named my daughter Isabella in the midst of the big Isobel/Bella/Isabelle/Issy boom almost 10 years ago and we never came upon another one in all her school life, she’s now in y4! Of a three form entry school

TheGirlWhoLived · 20/05/2020 17:15

I know 4 Teddys under 3 and I don’t even know that many children Grin

Roselilly36 · 20/05/2020 17:10

Very popular on the south coast, I know quite a few.

SionnachRua · 20/05/2020 17:03

Fine as a nickname for Edward but I wouldn't want Teddy to be the only option for an adult. I do think it's a bit...blah and like you are trying to lock him into cutesy babyhood.

Alwaysundecided · 20/05/2020 16:57

I know 3 Teddys under 5 and I don't know that many children! I think it's cute on a baby but sounds a bit silly on a man.

loubert89 · 20/05/2020 09:16

I know at least 4 toddlers called Teddy, plus an 8 year old.

Most (not all) are Edwards and a Theodore.

Lavenderblues · 19/05/2020 22:49

I know a girl Teddy.

It's a nickname for Theodore and Theodora!

Ed or Eddie is often short for Edward.

thirtywon · 19/05/2020 21:45

I know two girl Teddies

Flymetothestars · 19/05/2020 19:12

I don't know anyone called Teddy Ted or Edward below age 30

captainraymondholt · 19/05/2020 19:09

I know two. Both are in their mid teens.

Whycantibetangy · 19/05/2020 00:57

My cat is called Mister Theodore Bear

Teddy for short Grin It causes me great amusement when we go to the vets

Aclh13 · 19/05/2020 00:11

I don't think it's as popular now, I've seen a gradual slowing of the name. I would go for it if you like it, don't be too bothered about what other people think. I went to school with a guy we called Teddy or ted

gothicsprout · 19/05/2020 00:05

I have kids under 4. I feel that around 1 in 3 of the baby boys we have met since my oldest was born have been called Teddy. So many Teddys.

TheThingWithFeathers · 19/05/2020 00:04

I know a toddler Teddy, officially Theodore.

sleepingpup · 19/05/2020 00:02

i know 10 dogs called Teddy . Most are cockerpoos.

i know one 19 yr old and my husbands cousin is known as Teddy ( full name Edward ) . It's not strange on a grown man when you're used to it.

Nachonacho · 18/05/2020 23:40

DC has 4 friends called Teddy and one Ted! (Only 3 of which are Edwards) I don't know any older than preschool age but it is a very popular name at the moment. It's lovely though so I'm not surprised!
