I think it’s a great name. Everyone in the English speaking world will recognise it immediately but your DD is unlikely to share it with anyone in her class. If you care about such things I think it’s sort of on trend with all the other ‘old lady’ names making a comeback, e.g. Elsie, Betty etc.

Old fashioned Irish and catholic. Although most Marys would be at least in their 60s and 70s now, so it might be due a revival. I'm not keen though.

Simple and beautiful.

It's a beautiful name. Underused and timeless

It's a camp and friendly term for a gay man.

Lovely, and unusual these days but instantly recognisable.

My classmates and I are all mid 50s now. I only went to school with one Mary back in the 70s and early 80s in Ireland. It's not that common. By contrast there were three Lorraines and four Lindas and Lyndas in my class and so many Christines and Suzannes I lost count. Several Nicolas, Emers, Niamhs, and Orlas too.

Not my taste at all but as others say there are lots of positives.

Very refreshing and stands out from the currently trending names. I like it. Very easy to travel with too I'd assume.

Due a revival I think. It fits my own naming criteria of short, neat, simple and classic.

The only trouble is, in Ireland where I live now every other woman over 50 is called Mary. In the UK it would sound fresh and different.

Easy to spell & pronounce because so well-known, inoffensive. Not many negatives about it.

BasiliskStare · 18/05/2020 01:55

Lovely and classic
