I think it’s lovely - both pretty and a classic

thumbelina03 · 18/05/2020 14:17

I'd only consider it for a middle name. It's not got the same classic appeal as some of the other "older" style names.

Cindie943811A · 18/05/2020 14:13

It has its merits but has been used so widely for over a thousand years in W Europe that it’s almost a “non name” like John. The name you choose when no one can agree about a name.
Perhaps a variation, of which there are many would appeal?
Eg. Marisa
Marianne etc

Love it - I know a nine year old Mary and she is one of the best kids I know so I'm biased Smile

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 18/05/2020 08:11

Absolutely classic. Was on my shortlist but we had a boy....

Orphlids · 18/05/2020 08:10

Makes me think of Carrie’s mum (Stephen King). God knows why, I don’t think she was even called Mary, was she? Unfortunately, that’s the image that pops into my head when I hear the name.

HeronLanyon · 18/05/2020 07:45

I like it a lot. Simple classic very underused.
It can go with a lot of middle names either said or as initials.

Blursula · 18/05/2020 07:44

Sorry - I think it’s incredibly dull and meh

DuchessOfSofa · 18/05/2020 07:38

@MaMaMyCorona well that's charmimg

DuchessOfSofa · 18/05/2020 07:37

I like it. It is rare these days.

olympicsrock · 18/05/2020 07:35

My name is Mary ( I’m 42). Not many other Mary’s around in the U.K. It’s a good name - no one ever asks me how to spell it or mispronounces. I like it as a name.

daisypond · 18/05/2020 07:33

I really like it. Fresh, simple. I know a 20-year-old Mary, but no others.

Oblomov20 · 18/05/2020 07:28

Old fashioned and a bit staid and boring now. Mary was always the traditional boring monotone plain Jane wasn't she?

MaMaMyCorona · 18/05/2020 07:21

Boring and reminds me of a 60 year old Irish catholic

AtopAHighHill · 18/05/2020 07:19

Beautiful. Classic yet modern and confident sounding.

pilates · 18/05/2020 07:17

Dull

Twickerhun · 18/05/2020 07:16

I like it - have a 21 month old niece called Mary. No Irish catholic relations here.

Malysh · 18/05/2020 07:09

Personally I don't like it. It may not be so common now but it's been used ad nauseam over the past millenia. Like John and all its derivatives, it's been irremediably spoiled for me.

But as others said it's fairly inoffensive so if you like it go for it.

VoVoVo · 18/05/2020 06:53

Thanks for all of your comments, really helpful!

My DDs middle name and I love it. It goes with her first name beautifully.
True to say it’s in tribute to her Irish catholic little Nana Grin

yikesanotherbooboo · 18/05/2020 06:44

Love it

Doowop20 · 18/05/2020 06:40

I’ve never liked it sorry.

LotusClover · 18/05/2020 06:39

The youngest one I know of is 14. At first I thought it was very dated, but it's actually grown on me a lot. I also like Marie/Maria.

Tsubasa1 · 18/05/2020 06:38

I like it.

Roselilly36 · 18/05/2020 06:35
