Shannon for a boy?

I'm 32 weeks, I am really rooting for this name but DP says it's a girl's name! I do get where he's coming from and I feel maybe at this point this name has the same problem as Ashley (also love but DP said it's a no from the start)

I do think Shannon paired up with a "boy" middle name could definitely be pulled off however I can't come up with a decent combination so convincing DP is proving to be very difficult now.

Please help xx

I only know girls called Shannon so to me it would sound the same as calling a boy a name like Sarah or Michelle or Hannah.

PowerStruggle · 16/05/2020 19:59

He’s never had any issues with his name. We’re 30 - not sure if it was more common then, but he’s never been bullied for it, and I’ve never found it odd

HelenaPeach · 16/05/2020 19:55

Nah..... terrible name

Summerloving16 · 16/05/2020 19:51

*his name

Summerloving16 · 16/05/2020 19:50

I went to school with a Shannon and he was never ever bullied about her name. His name was his name ! It does make me wonder ... one minute you have a thread about how cruel children are ? Yet adults are posting comments like ‘ unless you want him to get bullied!’ No ones their our some children who are mean etc if they have parents with those views !
It’s a lovely name and like I said Shannon never had a problem with his name as far as anyone was aware x

Haworthia · 16/05/2020 19:48

Don’t do it.

I think of it as a female name, but quite a dated one too.

Jane67996 · 16/05/2020 19:48

Just don't do it ..

LotusClover · 16/05/2020 19:46

Not liking common names is fair enough, but there are thousands of better rare names to choose from.

MerryDeath · 16/05/2020 19:34

i like it

thecognoscenti · 16/05/2020 19:28

I remember a Neighbours storyline where two women had babies at the same time, a boy and a girl, and the first name of both was Shannon. That's all I've got.

We live in Thailand, we're English though. We're here for the long run which I think allows a whole lot of flexibility with names as we are based in such an international community that people don't really bat an eyelid when they hear names from different origins

Shannon is the name of a dog who "drifted out to sea"

Shannon belonged to one of The Beach Boys (possibly Carl Wilson)

The harmonies on this are beautiful and are sung by The Beach Boys.

Shannon was a girl dog.

Roseburn · 16/05/2020 19:23

Shane? Shaun?

pooopypants · 16/05/2020 19:22

Reminds me of Neighbours

No

Don't do it

Foals · 16/05/2020 19:21

I do think it's strongly associated with being a girls name.

How about Shea? (I've always loved Shea, I think it's cool, timeless, strong...)

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 16/05/2020 19:19

Where do you live OP? Based on the answers yanbu if you live in Oz or NZ

I had no idea it was a unisex name (I'm in England) and would assume female based on the name.

Crazycrazylady · 16/05/2020 19:16

No it's Irish river and a girls name.
Don't do to him. It's far too feminine sounding to ever be thought of as a boys name

Elouera · 16/05/2020 19:14

No. Why set a child up for years of having to clarify people on the phone, at job interviews etc etc who assume its a female?

I knew 1 male Shannon from a Pacific Island, but even at that time it was unusual. I know FAR more female ones and wouldn't set a child up for an ambiguous name.

MsChatterbox · 16/05/2020 19:12

Ashley is way more boy name to me than Shannon. Honestly if your dp is so against its better just to let it go. I've had to let go of names I chose when I was a child as dp didn't like them - it's just a part of partnership.

fallfallfall · 16/05/2020 19:10

go for shane or shawn/sean.
really unfair.

Headstand · 16/05/2020 19:08

I know it as unisex, especially in the context of Australia or New Zealand. I know of a few from there (including one of the MasterChef Australia mentors!).

I'd go for it.

Shelley54 · 16/05/2020 19:07

"Popular and basic". So you want unpopular and complicated.

Think about your son instead of you for a minute - would you want to be a teenager or an adult and constantly having to explain you aren't a girl, you just have a girl's name?

Find something popular and basic.

Destroyedpeople · 16/05/2020 19:07

I know a young man Shannon...think it's kind of annoying for him tbh

How does he feel about his name? Is it actually a daily struggle when he meets new people?

I’m married to a Shannon, and went to school with three of them, two boys and a girl. I like it on a boy but not to everyone’s taste.
