Tom???
Read an article on a males perspective on their name and it has made me totally rethink what names to give a boy. I've not stopped thinking of names in a complete panic about the supposedly "wet" name I had in mind. SOS 🆘 Help needed! 🙏🏾

I've been teaching for 6 years and I've only ever taught one Thomas, and there are only about 3 or 4 boys called Thomas currently at my (fairly large) primary school...and only one is shortened to Tom.

DS is called Thomas (calls himself Tom) and there are no others in his class at nursery...so perhaps it's more popular in other regions? I'm in the NW.

Interesting about the comments on Tom being a popular or common name. I have a Thomas (AKA Tom or Poopy Pants as he decided to rename himself yesterday). He was the only Tom in his year at Nursery and is the only Tom in his class at school. It's not as common as it was when I was his age.

Tom is great, I love it. I know a couple who are just Tom, not Thomas.

As for Rupert, I'm so sorry but I do think of it as a bit drippy.

Tom has been around for many centuries. 'Tom, Dick and Harry' was a reflection that Thomas, Richard and Henry were very common names down the ages.

Why care if someone else has the same name? It's not their name that makes someone unique,no matter how out there. As someone's already said Tom/Thomas is timeless, classless and most definitely not wet.

My son is Tom. He's grown up now it seems he's always liked his name. We named his Thomas because I like to give a choice if possible and he went through a phase of preferring Thomas when he was a child and Tommy as a teenager but mostly he's been Tom. It's an excellent name all round, IMO.

Tom is great, would have been our choice but we are having a girl. It’s popular in a solid, not trying too hard way. Where I am it’s not particularly common in younger boys, more in sort of 20s-30s. I think Rupert is becoming more popular but is more likely to peak and date badly. I don’t love it either - but it’s not awful!

Rupert is wet sorry. Tom is far nicer and crosses the ages, and the classes nicely. It’s a properly ‘solid’ name imho.

Tom is a great name, not at all wet. Rupert is a great name, with the potential to be a bit wet. I certainly wouldn’t let it put me off. I’d be more excited about meeting a Rupert than a Tom because Tom is so mainstream. I agree with a PP - Toms are always handsome.

Much prefer Rupert. I know one (in his early 30s) who is one of the coolest people I know. He goes by Ru.
Tom is fine but a bit boring imo

Tom is just so so common. It is the most common name in my age group (nearly every single one of DH's friends is called Tom and loads of my friends' husbands/boyfriends are too) plus in every year group I teach there is always a good handful of them too. I mean, it's fine but I'm at the point where I just find it boring now.

I prefer Rupert purely for the fact I don't know about 500 of them.

Tom is a lovely name however my DP, three of my friends and countless acquaintances have sons named Tom. Its in my view the most popular name ever. But it is a good name.

Tom is nice, but your baby will be beautiful and wonderful whatever you name him.

We know two Felixs and a Monty- none of them are remotely wet.
But lots of people moan about Monty being a dogs' name. I think it's lovely though.
(And like to use literary names for pets in any case!)

I know brothers Tom and Rupert. Both are hulking rugby players - nothing wet about either of them.
