Penny or Indie?

Really love these names. I'm due in forever with our 3rd child (girl) and would love to hear opinions on both names!

We could still change our minds but right now these two are on the top of our list! Thanks If you have similar names on your girl's list please do mention them.

These are not nicknames as I live in Scandinavia and people here don't really do nicknames.
So Penny and Indie as they are.
(I know India is a "proper" name, but I've never been there and I don't want to name my child after a place I don't know if I like).

Names just aren't like they used to be in terms of "chavy" and "posh". I know a baby Rupert and Hugo both from a council estate. I tend to be a bit snobby about hyphenated first names but honestly people have such a vast array of names now that a name like Indie just is commonly used enough for people to start assuming ALL Indie's must be chavs.

I love both ! I would go with penny , Indie and India have become quite popular here over the past year ( Ireland )

I can be really judgemental when it comes to names too. Not nice, but I can be!

The thing I am most afraid of is for it to end up a chavvy name. I know that's stupid, but I would be so sad if our daughter's name would end up being really downmarket in a couple of years.

I know that if I love it I should pick the name - but I won't love it if the above happened. Now look who is judgemental! Blush Blush Blush

If I'm 100% honest, I'd expect the parents of Indie to be the annoying type of hipster. I would certainly expect the father to have a beard. The child would probably be 'spirited' and wearing a dodgy clothes/dressing up mix. Oddly, when changed to the name Indigo, I'd expect a chilled, slightly vague hippy type and a nicer child. India an annoying pushy MC parent, probably with their child in a cheap private school.

I am clearly much more judgemental than I'd first realised!

Now I'm wondering if Indie is going to be a popular name the next 5-10 years since people are responding so well to it - wouldn't want that.. I was really expecting people to be mad at me for wanting to call my daughter something "ridiculous". Especially because people on MN can be so mean Grin I saw it on a unisex name thread and I fell in love with it.

What kind of people would you suspect to call their child Indie?

I love Indie. I also like Indigo not sure if thats too out there though. I also like Summer.
Penny sounds a bit old fashioned to me.

whats I know one male Indy (related) and three female Indies. The oldest being about five. I do vaccinate children though so come across this age group a lot.

@cptartapp the name "Indy" (spelt that way) is outside the top 1,000 names!!! Only 20 babies were given this name
Indie is outside the top 200 for girls and outside the top 3,000 (!!!) for boys. 5 boys were given the name Indie in a year!

Love both! Its all relative I know but I wouldn't say indie is "so popular" myself. It's outside the top 230 names and even if you add all the "India" and "Indie"s together the total names still wouldn't reach the top 100 chart @Nachonacho

Penelope is number 48 in the chart so if a high proportion of them are known as Penny you'll probably find that's the more commonly used name. But who knows. Both are excellent choices

Not keen on either. Penny at a push.

Both are quite cutesy. Indie reminds me of indie music - I don't hear it as a name. (Before people attack me, yes, I'm aware it is a name, I just don't think of it as one when I hear it)

Penny seems to be coming back into fashion but I'm not sure if I like it.

I'd probably go for Indie simply because it looks nicer written down.

I would consider to be short for India or independent. I know you don't want to name your baby after a country you don't know if you'd like. Indie is too close to India so I would think it was short for India.

If it was Penny short for Penelope I'd choose that.
