Otto?

Love this name, but put off by the grandmas reactions, which have been to relentlessly suggest other names and query where this one has come from.

Baby due in a week and this is still my favourite, but is it a bit too out there?

My friend's eldest is called Otto. He's 19 now and the nicest young man you could imagine.
Glad you're going with Otto. Great name

missmouse101 · 13/05/2020 21:39

It's good! Yes, never discuss names with family. Just announce it.

ChildofCastor · 13/05/2020 21:38

I know a 10 year old Otto and he's one of the loveliest children I've met, so I may be biased but I love the name. Rising in popularity - up from 976th in 1996 to 236 in 2018 (names.darkgreener.com/#otto). Ottilie has also risen - I know four!

Maybelatte · 13/05/2020 21:37

I love it but sadly DH vetoed.

Edenember · 13/05/2020 21:30

@PowerStruggle yayyyy

PowerStruggle · 13/05/2020 20:01

Sticking with Otto 😁

I think it’s nice - it’s quite popular where I am (London) so not at all weird. My son has a very traditional name (a kings name) and there are more people called Otto in the school than people with his name!

Whatsyourflava · 13/05/2020 14:22

I think Wulf would me misheard all the time too

"This is Wulf"

"Wilf?"

"No Wulf"

"Wolf?"

"No...W..u...l...f"

"Ah sorry. Lovely name" 🤥☺️

Whatsyourflava · 13/05/2020 14:18

Please tell me you're sticking with Otto @PowerStruggle

It's gorgeous

Your husband is right about Wulf though - that is a bit too far in my view 😂. Otto is just so cool though

TheRainbowCollection · 13/05/2020 14:03

I like it. Arlo just makes me think of the baby monitor company, unfortunately!

MysteryFrog · 13/05/2020 07:41

I love it! So much that it’s the same of my second child Grin I get loads of compliments on his name and no ones ever says anything negative about it (to my face at least)

Fionn was very high on my list too, lovely names!

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 13/05/2020 07:28

It makes me think of an overweight elderly German man circa 1890 with a red face, walrus moustache and a pocket watch. So it's a no from me.

Lavenderblues · 13/05/2020 07:19

Comedy name imo. Perhaps due to Otto Waalkes?

LizzieAnt · 13/05/2020 00:27

Otto and Fionn are so different in style...I don't know if this should matter, but I think it would, a little, for me.

PenOrPencil · 12/05/2020 20:50

As long as you don’t have any German heritage or connections I can see how it could pass as quirky in the UK... As a German I find it simply awful. Old fashioned and no positive connotations whatsoever (Otto Waalkes, Ottos Mops, Otto Versand).

MikeUniformMike · 12/05/2020 20:48

Notto.

PowerStruggle · 12/05/2020 20:41

I’ve never made the Simpson’s connection until now. I assumed he was called Auto - like automobile 😂

We don’t have any German heritage, which is maybe why it’s a bit odd to family. Pronunciation wise there will be a few harsh accents to deal with. Wulf short for wulfric was on our list, but got a hard veto from husband!

Good name. Ten years ago it was a braver choice but unlikely to raise eyebrows any more. Don't choose a name based on what other people think unless they are raising genuine concerns that the name is offensive (eg a swear word) or badly spelt/tacky to the point that a future job application might get thrown in the bin. If you really can't live with her hating it then maybe Otis? Similar sounding name, similar trendiness level but less German which is probably what puts off an older generation.

Electrical · 12/05/2020 15:11

My accent can’t pronounce it, and I can think of several other regions in the uk that wouldn’t be able to pronounce it either

vulvic · 12/05/2020 14:54

Love it.

Grufallosfriends · 12/05/2020 14:39

Awful and old fashioned.

Also the name of the world's biggest mail order company.

TooGood2BeTrue · 12/05/2020 14:17

I find it very old-fashioned German...

saffy1234 · 12/05/2020 14:13

All I think of is

My name is Otto
I love to get Blotto

The simpsons...
Weird really as a friend called her dd Ottillie and I love it xx

ellanwood · 12/05/2020 14:12

@lifesnotaspectatorsport - that is the name I bottled out of giving DS2. He was gutted when I told him. he loves it and has told me he plans pon changing his name to Wulfric as soon as he leaves home.

ellanwood · 12/05/2020 14:11

I love it. A friend almost chose it and I was disappointed she didn;t. Such a wonderful name.
