Nina or Iona

Currently 37 weeks pregnant! Which one is better? A couple of people have said Iona is a bit of a mouthful or don’t know how to pronounce it. Three people thought it was Loner! I like both but maybe Nina more because it is short and sweet. Husband prefers Iona. Thank you.

Good choice, OP. It's such a beautiful name. Congratulations! Flowers

Peridotty · 24/07/2020 20:28

We ended up calling our little daughter Iona. Thanks everyone! X

Definitely Iona, as long as your surname isn't Carr or something like that!

SionnachRua · 20/05/2020 19:35

Really don't like Iona. As an Irish person it does say institute to me, though the rest of the world won't know those backwards cranks. I also don't like the "I own a" thing or how it looks when written.

Nina is quite pretty, I'd use it.

hopelessatthinkingupusernames · 20/05/2020 18:56

Love Iona. Does not work with my surname though!

Bringmewineandcake · 18/05/2020 19:11

Iona for me too, i think it's so pretty.

overandunder9 · 18/05/2020 19:01

Ooo I did too @LaMarschallin. Never met anyone with that pronunciation since.

BelievinForAMiracle · 18/05/2020 18:57

Iona is a pretty name. Nina means daughter in Spanish ... on any holiday to a Spanish speaking location they might think it unimaginative.

Crookshanksthecat · 18/05/2020 17:41

Love Iona

Not a fan of Nina it just reminds me of police siren noise and I had a friend called Nina who was always called Ninny which I really don't like!

BlahBlahYapYap · 18/05/2020 17:38

Love them both. If I had to choose I'd got for Iona.

daphnerose · 18/05/2020 17:33

I feel like Nina is too similar to the names which are popular at the moment. I love the name Iona because of the hypnotic ‘Oh’ sound. I know an Iona and a Nina and both are so sweet.

Ineedabreak19 · 16/05/2020 11:50

Iona is classier & very beautiful and Nina sounds a bit 1970's average.

diddl · 14/05/2020 16:01

I'll just add a vote for Iona!

Peridotty · 14/05/2020 15:08

Thank you for all your replies so far!! Seems like a bit of a tie between Iona and Nina! I think more people have said Iona is more beautiful though?

Iona is beautiful. Nina is very meh.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 13/05/2020 17:19

Nina

Whatsyourflava · 11/05/2020 21:20

Both lovely

user1493494961 · 11/05/2020 19:42

Nina, I think it's quite elegant.

givemecrisps · 11/05/2020 18:20

Isn't Iona an electric car?

Shinyhappypeople1 · 11/05/2020 18:14

Nina hands down. @Hannah021 my sister is a 37 year old Nina. Highly successful accountant. I don’t understand why you’d find that weird? No one has ever said it’s an odd name. I actually love it and if it wasn’t my sisters name it would be first choice for me.

Iona reminds me of the Iona institute a backward anti abortion christian fundamentalist group
