Does Magda sound too harsh?

It’s a great name

Mimilamore · 08/05/2020 18:42

I love it, strong and different to all the 'cute' names around x

MikeUniformMike · 08/05/2020 18:04

I like it. I know someone called it. She's Polish.

apricotdreams · 08/05/2020 16:51

It's a lovely name.

whatausername · 08/05/2020 16:48

IA with you that Madeleine is very pretty!

Oh OK, sorry, my mix up.

whatausername · 08/05/2020 15:32

Pemba I didn't say I liked Gertrude, a PP did.

KindnessCrusader · 08/05/2020 15:01

I love it.

Goostacean · 08/05/2020 14:37

I think it is SO COOL. You can’t be called Magda and a loser 😂 It was on my girl’s shortlist but full name Magdalena (Spanish so “leh-na”) or Magdalina (Russian), and DH and I couldn’t agree. Luckily we had a boy so that was the end of our debate.

CherryTreeBlossoms · 08/05/2020 14:32

I think it is a lovely name.

CaryStoppins · 08/05/2020 14:25

I also like Magdalena but Magda is a bit Pauline/Carole.

Ellmau · 08/05/2020 14:23

Prefer the longer Magdalen/ene/ena.

Crookshanksthecat · 08/05/2020 14:20

Magda very ugly name sorry

Mucklowe · 08/05/2020 14:15

Polish au pair.

Pemba · 08/05/2020 14:15

Oh reading back your replies I see you like a harsh G sound. Fair enough.

You lost me when you said that you liked Gertrude though!

Pemba · 08/05/2020 14:11

It does have a bit of a harsh sound. Agree with pps that Magdalena is better.

Madeleine/Madeline is based on the same root name I believe (after Mary Magdalene) but the hard 'g' sound is removed (I suppose because it's not in the French language), making it much softer and prettier IMO.

Peonyonpoint · 08/05/2020 08:18

Love it, but like another OP I love all the hard Gs and think they will be refreshing for teens in a sea of Lilys and Ellies and bellas and amelias. So many Ls!

missmouse101 · 08/05/2020 07:40

Harsh and ugly sounding to me.

TheVanguardSix · 08/05/2020 07:37

It's short for Magdalena. I would assume you were Polish Catholic. But probably because my dad and his whole family come from Poland and Czech Republic. So when I hear this name, Magda, it's very cultural for me personally. This shouldn't stop anyone ever using a name though!

BrokenBrit · 08/05/2020 07:33

I think Magdalena is an elegant name, and gives the options of both Magda and Lena as nicknames.

Blursula · 08/05/2020 07:30

It reminds me of the old nanny from sex and the city. I find it too harsh. I like Agnes as an alternative

Orphlids · 08/05/2020 06:29

I really like it. I admit, the thought of a tiny baby Magda is a little strange, because I think of it more as a woman’s name, but obviously she will only be a baby a very short while. I agree with PP that it is a great change from the soft, ultra-feminine sounding, frilly names that have been so prevalent so long, and are pretty dull. I also like Greta, Inge, Margot, Gertrude etc. Something a little big ugly in my choices, I think, but I do find ugliness infinitely more interesting than the narrow window of beauty. My DP doesn’t understand at all how to me ugliness isn’t really a negative thing.

Kokeshi123 · 08/05/2020 03:41

Quite like it, but prefer Magdela.

MotherOfDragonite · 07/05/2020 23:36

I think it's beautiful and I know a child called Magda -- the name wears well.

DramaAlpaca · 07/05/2020 23:34

Yes to OP's question. It's too hard sounding for me.
