Hi! Looking for honest opinions on my boys names list, cut it down and tell me why you've removed the ones you have? It's so long and me and OH constantly argue about which names deserve to be at the top (not pregnant yet but on month 5 of trying).

Sullivan
Harvey

Zachary

Archer

Teddy

Joey

Wyatt

Max/Maxwell

Abel

Ashton

Elias

Axel

Kian

Grayson

I responded on your previous thread OP, because DS2 is Sullivan (he's 6). He prefers Sully or Van because he says Sullivan is too long to write. I call him whatever springs to mind!

Our surname is also a Scottish surname (Ramsay) and it flows well. DS1 also has a surname as first name.

We don't live in the UK so there is very little "classism" that exists around naming conventions here (Caribbean). Massive mix of Brits, Aussies, American, Canadian, Jamaican and Caymanian.

We got nothing but positive feedback when we named him, and honestly if you love it go for it. You can have an opinion on a name that has been formed from a different influence, but when you meet a baby you love with that name, it changes your opinion.
For example, I think the name Ptolemy is a massive wanker name, genuinely because it sounds so try hard and the only person I met with that name clouded my judgment. But if my sister were to have a baby name Ptolemy, my opinion would change to one of love, because I'd see my baby nephew named Ptolemy, not the dickhead I used to know.

Gathering the opinion of strangers on Mumsnet is a bit futile because all posters will offer their preconceived opinion of a name.

It's what you love that matters. If it makes your heart sing when you say it, then that's your name...

My Sullivan was either going to be Sullivan or Lachlan but he was born on St Patrick's day so it had to be Sullivan. In my heart, from the first time i heard the name I knew that was for him.

Named after one very hot actor as well (Sullivan Stapleton) and I'm not even ashamed to admit it 😁

Itsallthedramamick · 10/05/2020 15:41

Elliot - nice
Sullivan - OK. Sully for short?
Harvey - reminds me of Katie Price
Zachary - ok
Archer - try hard
Teddy - nice as a nickname for Edward or Theodore. Not a name in its own right for me
Joey - ok
Wyatt - dislike
Max/Maxwell - ok
Abel - ok
Ashton - dislike
Elias - dislike. Ellis is similar and much better imo
Axel - try hard
Kian - dislike
Grayson - ok
Harrison - ok. Prefer Harry
Holden/Holder - dislike
Arlo - nice
Beau - ok
Hayes - dislike

Elliot is the winner for me. Good, strong and classy name imo

Just curious if the Cian lovers are Irish? As thats the original name and spelling of it.
I’m not Irish, but would spell it Cian - as that is how it is spelled. Just like it is Niamh and not Neve.

CloudsCoveredTheSky · 10/05/2020 04:16

They're all a bit try hard for my taste

Nancydrawn · 10/05/2020 04:12

These are very American, particularly Southern. All the lastname firstnames (Grayson, Hayes, Harrison, Holden, etc), as well as Wyatt, Beau, Ashton, even Archer--all very American.

Some of them are a bit recently dated (Arlo, Archer).

Of the names you have, I think I like Elliot and Max best (though latter ideally a longer name).

But my favorite is probably Theodore (or possibly Edward) nicknamed to Teddy.

FiveOutOfFiveGoldblums · 10/05/2020 03:44

Hollyhobbi · 10/05/2020 03:34

In order of preference...

Grayson
Max
Teddy/Ted
Harrison- although wouldn't want it shortened to Harry

I don't dislike Archer or Holden although I wouldn't pick them myself.

AlliKaneSon · 08/05/2020 21:39

Harrison is my favourite (bit biased as I have one- known as Harri, though).

SarahTTCx · 08/05/2020 09:57

@Incrediblytired that's funny, I'm not a fan of overly American names, I would have said the only ones on my list that were very American are Wyatt and Hayes. That's what puts me off Wyatt a bit, but with Hayes it's a family surname so I don't view it as particularly American because of that!

I find it so interesting how different peoples opinions are on names though!

OP posts:
SarahTTCx · 08/05/2020 09:55

@babynamelover those are the 2 currently fighting for our top spot! Sullivan is almost definitely the name we'll use if we have a boy, the only thing that holds me back is that our surname is very surname-y (it's similar to McIntosh) so I worry that it's too heavy. I like the idea of the mn James and that would make it flow better, but obviously most of the time they wouldn't be referred to in full mn included.

I love Elliot and like Sullivan 😃
