We're considering either Ronin or Perses as names for a boy. Crazy idea or not?

don't laugh when they see the name on a CV when your child is an adult trying to get a job.

Personally, as the owner of a distinctly "odd" (sur)name, it's only ever been an advantage in life ... it's a rare interview where someone doesn't ask it's origins, and that's a chance to deliver a confident "impromptu" minute or so lecture that John Smith or Jane Brown might not get.

(DS has reported similar ...)

KindnessCrusader · 11/05/2020 17:01

Perseus would be better I think.

Flymetothestars · 11/05/2020 17:00

I agree @Overthinker1988 Ronin sounds so similar to Ronan it just seems like a variation of the name. It seems like OP is wanting an unusual name and seen as names like Rowan, Roman etc are all storming up the top 100, maybe Ronin is a name for OP to avoid as it'll sound similar to many top 100 names.

Perses might be a better option. What about Percy?

Overthinker1988 · 11/05/2020 16:51

Ronin is Ok but it will be pronounced like Ronan, people will assume it's a variation of that. Ronan is a really nice name though and a 'proper' name, why not go with that?
Or, Rowan, Rohan, Rory etc

DramaAlpaca · 06/05/2020 23:00

Yes. You're mad.

Whatsyourflava · 06/05/2020 21:36

Perses is ok, sounds a bit like Percy but that's pretty rare too so won't get muddled

Whatsyourflava · 06/05/2020 20:51

It seems like you're wanting a name that's a bit different @Pika09 and that's totally understandable. What i would warm you though is that "Ronin" sounds fairly similar to a load of top 100 names, including the current fastest rising name Roman (which every celeb seems to be using). Also will be misheard for Ronan. I think if you're wanting something a bit different that's great but look at the fastest rising names and have a think of you'd like to avoid a name so similar and ripe for confusion.

midsomermurderess · 06/05/2020 19:11

I know what his first name is. But he is universally, apart from his family, called Boris.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/05/2020 17:04

Boris sounds frankly ridiculous, yet, here we are tbf to his parents, his first name is fine. British PM Alexander Johnson sounds perfectly sensible

Edenember · 06/05/2020 16:20

I’m not keen but it’s really subjective. If you’re going to go unusual by it’s very nature you aren’t going to crowd please. How about Rohan?

midsomermurderess · 06/05/2020 15:56

Makeup, Boris sounds frankly ridiculous, yet, here we are. Ronin is ok, Perses sounds like a misheard Perseus.

IsolaPribby · 06/05/2020 12:38

If you want unusual, how about X Æ A-12?

tainot · 06/05/2020 12:37

I like them both 🤷🏻‍♀️

SleepingStandingUp · 06/05/2020 12:37

Any name you choose try and to announce them as a newscaster would if they were Prime Minster or CEO of a large respected company
And now, we're going live to Prime Minister Thaddeus Marston as he achieves world peace with the help of his brother Balthazar, CEO of Peace Inc.

Dammit, it sounds so cool. We def should have done it

OnABeachSomewhere · 06/05/2020 12:36

Ronan is fine but I wouldn't go for the others.

Xerxes
Peter
Atticus

123Dancewithme · 06/05/2020 12:21

Ronan is better than Ronin

I know someone who has a Perseus nn Percy

zscaler · 06/05/2020 11:14

I think Ronan is a lot better than Ronin. I suspect that if you pick Ronin people will think you meant Ronan but are just bad at spelling. Ronan is a nice name with good classical connotations.

Perses I really don’t like - it doesn’t look or sound nice imo. Would you consider Percy or even Perseus instead?

Pika09 · 06/05/2020 10:29

For some reason we are finding boys names really difficult to choose, hence grasping at straws lol

OP posts:
Altuve · 06/05/2020 09:52

Not a fan of Persis, but not because it’s a weird name, I just think it’s not the nicest sounding name.

Ronin I have no problem with at all - although I guess there would be plenty of misspellings of Ronan. I have a name with numerous spelling variations and mine is one of the least common - it’s a pain at times, but it’s no biggie.

As for the PP above who liked Thaddeus - I love that name and would have used it if a) we didn’t have other boys names we liked more b) we had more boys and less girls in our family!

flowerPower118 · 06/05/2020 09:52

No chance. Don't do it. Horrible

Horehound · 06/05/2020 09:51

Ronin is ok although I prefer Ronan. The other...no don't do it!

exexpat · 06/05/2020 09:50

Ronin? Really? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rōnin

And by Perses are you thinking of the Greek god of destruction?

Yes, you are mad.

DrinkingInTheNightGarden · 06/05/2020 09:49

Eeek please don't! Poor kid!

FairfaxAikman · 06/05/2020 09:47

What about Ronan?

AdaColeman · 06/05/2020 09:46

How about Percy instead of Perses?
