Girls' names which sound strong and self assured

Can anyone suggest any girls' names that sound strong, confident and self assured? I'm helping think of a name for my DNiece and would really appreciate some suggestions!

I guess this baby has been named by now but I would suggest Bridget. It actually means strong.

Aphra, after Aphra Behn. A few names from my own list which I feel are strong and self assured are Rowena, Eliza, Erika, Tilda and Theia.

Valantina, Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space. And it was a solo flight.

I never knew Alexis was ever a male name.

Not a Buffy fan then?

Adding to your list

Dr Hillary Jones
Marion Robert Morrison - AKA John Wayne
Shirley Crabtree - AKA Big Daddy
Shirley Keeldar - OK fictional character but still a boy's name more usually used for a girl
Mary is not uncommon for a middle name is some places
Kelsey Grammer

It is interesting, isn't it! Alexis Korner was a well known musician in the UK in the 60s. He's the only one I can think of.

Thank you for that interesting link. I'm surprised at the amount of male names that reverted to 100%, or almost 100%, female years later. I never knew Alexis was ever a male name.

@babynamelover - thank you. I wondered where it is from. I think she does pronounce it as you described but the 'huh' bit is very light. You mostly hear the 'arrow' bit. I LOVE that name so much. It's so powerful.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/05/2020 08:19

They would now, but not when they were given. Evelyn Waugh was born in 1905. I'd be surprised if any boys are now given the name Evelyn because it's now used far more often for girls.

Leslie/Lesley is a confusing one because for some reason the -ey spelling was usually used for women and the -ie for men.

nameberry.com/blog/unisex-baby-names-names-that-morphed-from-blue-to-pink This looks at names that moved from being mostly or wholly boys' names to being exclusively girls' names.

OutOntheTilez · 07/05/2020 04:12

Perhaps, but many people would consider them girls’ names.

Aroha is a Maaori name it should be pronounced Arrow-huh :)

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/05/2020 02:06

All those are culturally boys names.

OutOntheTilez · 06/05/2020 01:40

Boys never get given 'girls' names and that's because it's seen as a demotion for boys.

Peyton Manning, Terry Bradshaw, Lindsay Buckingham, Sandy Koufax, Stacy Keach and Leslie Nielsen didn't fare too badly despite their, um, demotions Wink And I wouldn’t classify Stevie Nicks, Glenn Close, Drew Barrymore, Daryl Hannah and Sean Young as weak.

Definitely Alexandra too. that's a great name.

ellanwood · 05/05/2020 09:00

Allegra - it means happiness
agree that Elizabeth and Katharine are strong, classic names
Caroline - I don't much like the name but I've never met one I would dare cross. They are always a force to be reckoned with! And Carrie is a cute shortened version.
Claudia - no idea why but it feels strong
Portia - Shakespeare's strongest heroine
Hero

I know a woman called Aroha - pronounced Arrow - every time I hear her name it sounds so strong and powerful, I love it.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 05/05/2020 09:00

Claudia is nice

peperethecat · 05/05/2020 08:59

Alex isn't a boy's name though. It's a nickname which could be for either Alexander or Alexandra.

And Alexandra fits the "strong and self assured" bill perfectly.
