Hi thanks for reading! Basically I’ve been really struggle to think o FB a girls name, I just can’t settle on anything and nothing feels right! And a few days ago I heard the name Ottilie (shortened to ottie) and I love it, it’s the only name so far I really love tbh. My only problems are I’m worried it’s slightly pretentious or too ‘out there’, what do you think? I’m not usually a massive fan of really unusual names and don’t want to sound like I’m trying too hard! Any feedback is appreciated... thanks x

Don't like it

whatausername · 03/05/2020 12:13

I think it's a horrible sound to hear tbh. I also think 'utterly' and 'Ottie' conjures up otters in my head.

roarfeckingroar · 03/05/2020 11:59

It's my favourite name and I love it but my horrible partner has ruled it out despite me having to grow the baby and him just being there for a fun few minutes at the beginning.

I'm considering a new partner for baby 2 PURELY for this reason

Thefaceofboe · 03/05/2020 11:56

For me Ottilie just doesn’t roll off the tongue right but I really like how it looks written down.

Danetobe · 03/05/2020 11:50

Painfully aspirational middle class. It's cute though.

daisypond · 03/05/2020 11:45

Ottoline is better than Ottilie, partly because it is less bandwagon-y and will end up less downmarket. Can’t say I’m keen on that either. Ottie is particularly horrid for both.

lollipoplola · 03/05/2020 11:44

I actually think it depends where you live determines the response to the name. I like Ottilie and where I am it would be well received.

Boogiewoogietoo · 03/05/2020 11:44

3 Ottilies in my DS’ school. Their DMs were all amazed as they thought it was such an unusual name! To be fair, those are the only 3 I’ve met.

whichteaareyou · 03/05/2020 11:42

I love this name and really really really hoping we can use it when the time comes! Husband dosent like it though

GinghamStyle · 03/05/2020 11:41

I think it’s ottilie awful!

sotiredwe · 03/05/2020 11:40

Other options

Odette
Odile

Yes Swan Lake characters but I know real people with those names.

Whatsyourflava · 03/05/2020 11:39

@sauvignonblancplz would that influencer be MOD?

Frage · 03/05/2020 11:36

@YouAndMeAndTheDevilMakesThree It should be pronounced Ott-eel-y-a

However, it seems to have somehow ended up being pronounced by a lot of people as Ott-illy. As a German name, it's lovely. As an "English" name (i.e. Ott-illy), it's going to be the next Amélie - i.e. nice French name which ends up being over-used and mis-pronounced (Ammerlee).

Other than that, there are a lot of little Ottilies around, OP, so I'd be wary of it for that reason. Ottoline is less common, and you could still use Ottie as a nn.

LittleDoveLove · 03/05/2020 11:33

I love it but my husband thinks it's pretentious but he think most names I like are. I floated it as a potential when I was pregnant and got a flat no.

avocadotofu · 03/05/2020 11:32

It's a beautiful name, I love it!

SimpleKindofLife · 03/05/2020 11:31

It is a little bit pretentious but I really like it! Tilly instead of Ottie for a nn though.

sotiredwe · 03/05/2020 11:30

@Chillipeanuts

It's fashionable now though, that's the point.

The once obscure girl's name Ottilie has risen to prominence as the most popular female baby name among Telegraph readers in 2019.

MintyCedric · 03/05/2020 11:29

I know a little Ottilie. She's very sweet and her parents aren't in the least bit pretentious.

boredah · 03/05/2020 11:24

A relative named her baby that last yr, it's a nice name but very "in".
What I find quite interesting is said relative had her first 2 dc very young & then 2 more much later. Each name was always very in/trendy for that particular yr so it's like a mini timeline eg Jade & Lola (very 00s) & now a Mabel & Ottilie.

Powerplant · 03/05/2020 11:20

I’ve heard of Ottoline as a girls name but think Ottilie sounds much more feminine and Tilly or Ottie cute

mamaoffourdc · 03/05/2020 11:18

My niece is an ottilie and we all call her ottie ❤️❤️

Chillipeanuts · 03/05/2020 11:15

Isn’t it a very old name? Not particularly “now”.

VictoriaBun · 03/05/2020 11:13

How about the name Ethoile , it means Star and is pronounced Et o lee .

India999 · 03/05/2020 11:10

Love ottilie.

sotiredwe · 03/05/2020 11:07

I think it's a bit too "now" if that makes sense.
