Boris used our boys names - HELP

Obviously lighthearted to an extent but Wilfred was the only boys name DH and I agreed on and now I feel as though we can’t use it because people will draw parallels. We’re not Bojo fans at all so it’s honestly the last thing we want!

We liked Rupert until I remembered Murdoch and it put me off. We already have two DS’s called Edward and Jude to give you an idea of taste. We’re set on Clementine for a girl so hopefully it’s a girl Grin.

I’m due in July- HELP!

Caleb

HoyaFlower · 06/05/2020 01:19

Benedict?
I like Albert too

TSSDNCOP · 06/05/2020 00:23

Oh seriously who the hell remembers what the last prime ministers 6th child was called once they leave office? If you like the name, use it.

bluemoon2468 · 05/05/2020 21:05

My mum nearly changed my name when I was born because a week later a very famous (broadly dislikable) celebrity called their child my exact name, first and middle! And I have an unusual name so it was very odd! But she's so glad she didn't change it, as aside from a comment or two that week, no one ever mentioned it again. The celebrity in question is still known (ish) and I don't think anyone remembers what his now 30 year old daughter is called. I've certainly never had anyone mention the link to me.

If you like the name Wilfred best then go for it. Honestly I'm not sure anyone will even mention it at the time, let alone later down the line. I have no idea what the names of any of our previous prime ministers' children are!

How about Wilbur or Rufus?

Wilfred is AWFUL! If naming his son Wilfred has put a load of people off that's probably the best thing he's done as a PM! Grin sorry.

Rupert is grand, I'm sure no one will associate with Murdoch... Rupert the bear is the closest association for me.

As an aside, when people suggest the name Ptolomy are they joking? Is it a MN joke name like Balonz? I can never be sure

Lala241280 · 04/05/2020 17:01

Think your son has had a good escape if I am honest love Jude and Edward is ok I’m think there are so many other names you could pick

HarrietM87 · 04/05/2020 16:58

Wilfred is SO common in East London - every other aging hipster parent has called their child Wilf. I’m sure they’ll be devastated that Boris has gone there!

I think he’s done you a favour OP. I’d definitely avoid it. Henry is lovely. Also love Magnus.

TheVanguardSix · 04/05/2020 16:55

Though someone mentioned Barnaby which would sound lovely with Edward and Jude.

TheVanguardSix · 04/05/2020 16:55

Oh heavens, go with Wilfred. I honestly wouldn't make the connection. I have a Theodore. So does BoJo. Though mine's 3 years younger. I did ask DS if he wished I'd given him the middle name Apollo. Grin He just rolled his eyes and left the kitchen. I'll take that as a 'no' then.

Seriously, OP, by the time your little one starts school, we won't be hearing much about Bojo's son. I really wouldn't let this stop you from using your favourite name.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 04/05/2020 16:47

It would put me off as well. How about Albert nn Bertie?

Whatsyourflava · 04/05/2020 16:47

I love the name Wilfred! I detest Boris but him using the name Wilfred would be a non-factor to me as the baby won't be featured much if at all going forward.
I don't see Wilfred as a trendy name myself as it's been in and out the top100 throughout history (indeed Boris and Carrie seem to have chosen it as it was both of their grandfathers names I think). Names like Hunter and Roman are trendy names as they're in the top 100 for the first time in history

scousema34 · 04/05/2020 16:27

I follow the unmumsy mum on Facebook and her boys are Henry, Jude and Wilf so you must have similar taste to her therefore I'm saying Henry.

Flippetydip · 04/05/2020 16:12

Edward and Jude are gorgeous names. Wilfred not so much.... if your next child is a boy and you call him Wilfred he will never forgive you when comparing his name to Edward and Jude!

FizzyGreenWater · 04/05/2020 16:09

Honestly, he's done you a favour. Wilfred is too fashion-y... it's way, way below Edward and Jude. It's one of the current crop of 'old-man-with cutesy-nickname' names which are going to date quite badly, even if it's not one of the 'main' ones:

Stanley (Stan)
Wilfred (Wilf)
Alfred (Alfie)

and also the Ronnies, Charlies, Reggies etc.

Find another name!

BikeRunSki · 04/05/2020 15:54

Wilfred has been a popular baby boys name for a few years, I don’t think Boris will cause it to spike.

Pregnantabroad · 04/05/2020 15:51

Somewhere (not someone)

Pregnantabroad · 04/05/2020 15:51

Our 3 year old is Wilfred. I couldn't decide between Frederick and Wilfred and went for Wilfred because a) Frederick would mean we had 3 kids whose name began with 'F' and b) I figured we could always nickname him Fred if we really wanted to
3 years later he's still Wilfred, not Wilf or Fred or anything else and to nickname him Fred feels so weird.
I was a bit bummed to see that Bojo had used the name but ah, not that bothered. as someone said, no one will remember and there's always at least one terrible example of a name someone.

Smile19 · 04/05/2020 06:46

Hi OP,
I know what you mean. I was very concerned sharing close due dates with two Royal babies that the names we liked would be used (they weren't), however I do think the Royals are more talked about over a longer period of time. It would have bothered me so I get how you feel.

However....I think PM baby names aren't as discussed and in 6 months time it'll be a none-issue. Wilfred has been rising in popularity for the last few years so I doubt anyone would think you named your baby after Brois' baby. Whatever you decide, congratulations and good luck.

Canklesforankles · 03/05/2020 18:28

Rufus?

Reuben

Gregory
Vincent

Quizeerascal · 03/05/2020 18:03

People may comment in the next few months but I imagine in even a years time people won't make the connection. I also think Wilbur is quite a cute name but perhaps a little out there, or if you like Rupert would Reuben work?

Standrewsschool · 03/05/2020 17:58

Use it if you love it. I vetoed Leo because Tony Blair had used it, a name I’d loved since Howard’s Way. Who would associate the name with Tony Blair now? You may get a few raised eyebrows initially, but that will soon pass.

Do you realise that Wilfred Owen is a famous war poet?

Wilfred Owen

Mammyloveswine · 03/05/2020 17:53

Although I have an Elijah and a Jude and think they go lovely!

Mammyloveswine · 03/05/2020 17:52

How about Albert? Nn albie or Bertie?
