What are your opinions on Rory?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Yester · 02/05/2020 23:07

It's a very wet name.

BeMoreZenLike · 02/05/2020 23:05

Love.

LizzieAnt · 02/05/2020 22:54

@StylishDuck @HaveAtEm
To my ear Row-ree and Roar-ee sound exactly the same too. Where I'm from though, we don't often use the word row as in argument, so I default to the 'row your boat' pronunciation. Love the name, OP.

HaveAtEm · 02/05/2020 22:54

@StylishDuck but that makes even less sense to me (absolutely no disrespect meant here at all 😳) because Rory Bremner is from Edinburgh and HE pronounces his name ‘Roar-ee’.

Grufallosfriends · 02/05/2020 22:21

Many people struggle with their Rs.

Rory sounds awful if that's the case...! Worse than Rupert.

StylishDuck · 02/05/2020 22:13

@HaveAtEm I'm Scottish. It's entirely likely that we pronounce "row" differently. I was meaning row as in "row a boat" not as in "having a row"

AppleKatie · 02/05/2020 21:51

I really like it.

ilikebigbuttsandicannotlie · 02/05/2020 21:48

Nice name

pilates · 02/05/2020 21:47

Love it ❤️

slipperywhensparticus · 02/05/2020 21:46

i love it but im always going to think "Rory THE ROMAN!" from dr who

this wouldn't put me off using the name

mollibu · 02/05/2020 21:41

Love it.

HaveAtEm · 02/05/2020 21:36

Love it OP 🥰

Don't know which part of the world you live @StylishDuck but where I'm from, Rory is pronounced 'Roar-ee' not 'Row-ree'...I've never heard it said like that anywhere. Think of Rory Bremner...Roar (like a lion!) ree (rhymes with tea) 👍

missmouse101 · 02/05/2020 21:34

Awful. I really dislike the 'roar' sound in it.

anonymum95 · 02/05/2020 21:30

Love it. I have a cousin Rory

Longdistance · 02/05/2020 21:29

Great name. My friends little lad was just named Rory. Another df has a lad who’s 10 and a Rory. So it’s a timeless name.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 02/05/2020 21:27

Rory is pronounced "row ree"

The Rorys I know pronounce it Roar-ee.

It’s a lovely name OP.

Crookshanksthecat · 02/05/2020 21:20

Love it we would have gone with this but it didn't go well with surname.

Victoria6386 · 02/05/2020 21:19

Love it, my third boy name option

Whatsyourflava · 02/05/2020 21:17

Let us know if it's a boy or girl @Ash06! Good luck at your scan

Orphlids · 02/05/2020 21:14

I hate it. It is difficult to pronounce. It sounds to me like a very boring name for a very boring man. I always imagine it would be the name of a very unattractive chap, seriously lacking in charisma. And now there are Rorys everywhere. But I’m one of the few people on Mumsnet who seems to dislike the name. The popularity of it alone would put me off. Don’t let me sway you though, because there will always be someone who hates the name you choose.

StylishDuck · 02/05/2020 20:31

Ruairidh/Ruairi is pronounced "roo ree" whereas Rory is pronounced "row ree"

florascotia2 · 02/05/2020 20:29

It's risen quite rapidly in popularity in England and Wales names.darkgreener.com/#rory Now a top 50 name.

As previous posters have said, it's a Scottish Gaelic name (in origin) that means Red King.
Rory is the Anglicised spelling. The Gaelic spelling - acording to trad spelling rules- is Ruairidh.
The two versions don't sound the same.

123Dancewithme · 02/05/2020 19:38

I’m not keen but I think I’m definitely in the minority.

PilatesPeach · 02/05/2020 19:11

Yes!

Wrongdissection · 02/05/2020 19:09

I have one. It’s fabulous.
