Sterling or Steen?

isolatedcaramel · 01/05/2020 05:27

Bottom choices have come down to these two that we absolutely adore yet we can't quite pick one of them and also having trouble with middle names so even considering not using any.

What do you think?
Do you think these could work as stand-alone names or any middle ideas?

Thanks everyone xx

But also to answer - if those are your best options I'm SURE you'd be able to find more. Look at historical figures - engineers, lords - some amazing first names along these 'not really names at all' lines.

FizzyGreenWater · 02/05/2020 18:03

Stirling, and spelled that way - definitely not as in 'pounds sterling'.

Steen sounds like a sex toy for some reason, or a porn star. There's something very vomitously porny about it!

Willow2017 · 02/05/2020 12:11

I was responding to the poster who said Sterling Moss was a racing driver.😀 The names are not different spellings if one name they are totally different. But Sterling still sounds like money to me😀

nymrgn · 02/05/2020 11:56

I much prefer Sterling over Stirling.

Mucklowe · 02/05/2020 11:12

Great names, for a stainless steel company.

cornersteps · 02/05/2020 10:15

We did choose between spellings though. There's Stirling with an i, and Sterling with an e. We chose to go with the spelling which had the e, and not the i

You chose between names. They are not the same.

LetsGetMotivated · 02/05/2020 09:56

To everyone saying it has to be with an i because of Stirling Moss, presumably the only Stirling/Sterling you can think of to name -

I'll just leave this here. Sterling with an e, is a name too Smile

cornersteps · 02/05/2020 08:58

we hated how Sterling looked when spelt with an i, as opposed to the e we went with!

It's not an alternative spelling though. It's a completely different noun. Pronounced differently too. You didn't choose between spellings. You chose between nouns and sounds.

Sterling's my fav. , with the meaning 'of high quality, pure' a good choice I think. Steen means 'stone' I believe, so meaning isn't quite as nice.

Willow2017 · 02/05/2020 02:17

Ace? Lumen?
No no no dont do that to your kid. Lifetime of teasing.

Willow2017 · 02/05/2020 01:53

Sterling Moss was one of Britain's greatest racing drivers, he died last month. Good name
No its not its awful its like calling a kid 'Pound' and btw its Stirling Moss!
Op most of those names? Only a couple of them are actual first names. Just why would you do that to a child?

WatchingTheBears · 02/05/2020 01:29

@emcero1 Ha you got there before me. Could always go old school with Matt

user1493494961 · 01/05/2020 22:51

Lachlan and Fraser are OK, the rest are odd.

BobbyBlueCat · 01/05/2020 22:15

Now I've seen the girl's names too, the whole list just sounds like one that a kid from the TV show '16 and pregnant' cobbled together.

I love Luna but I’m not a big fan of how popular it is becoming and Lula only reminds me of Lula da Silva, the ex president of Brazil and I can’t really look past it as it's turned into a boy's name for me even though it's just his nickname

Wheresthebiffer2
I would probably pronounce Stein different to Steen and whereas I will admit the the Stein spelling is slightly more aesthetically pleasing I feel the pronounciation could differ slightly. I really enjoy surnames as names, I like how they can be stand-alone names that don’t really need a middle.

Florascotia2
Even though I am a big fan of Steen Jones and his work, I am not exactly choosing the name as a tribute to him and his art but more because I really liked the name and the vibe it gives. And tbf no one really mentioned him until I cited him as the person who inspired the name to me so I don’t really think people will so easily associate the name to the artist

Sterling silver. Never heard of Steen, just sounds like Steve gone wrong.

Brakebackcyclebot · 01/05/2020 17:02

Steen? Please don't do that! I immediately thought of spleen and then stain. Not great connotations!

Of your other boys' names, I like Lachlan, Campbell, Fraser. All very Scottish (I like that).

Girls names - I like only Indigo off your list.

Sorry OP, you do like strange names that aren't really names. Grin

florascotia2 · 01/05/2020 16:54

OP a quick Google shows (1) that Race Bannon's name is actually a nickname. His given first name is Roger.... (2) Race Imboden is named after the cartoon character's nickname. However, in the UK, to call a child 'Race' would be seen by many as borderline offensive.

Steen is actually an old name. A version of Danish 'sten' = stone. Lots of Mumsnetters seem not to like it, but to me it's vastly better than Race. And I prefer it to Stirling - that just conjures up pictures of a Scottish castle and coach-tours and summer crowds to me.

However, you say that you like Steen because of the tatooist/graffiti artist Steen Jones. And in Australia, at least, that's the main association of the name. Steen Jones is clearly very popular and very productive. There is even - accoding to Google, again - a Steen Jones range of men's underwear.

Your baby, your choice, obviously. But just because you - right now - like a very particular and distinctive style of comic/graffiti art, I think you might perhaps want to pause and think over whether it's fair to 'label' your baby with your artistic tastes - for the whole of his future life.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 01/05/2020 16:54

Stein - as in Jock Stein the football player - would at least be a recognizable spelling. But not Steen.

You seem determined to use a surname as firstname for your baby. Why?

ishouldtryabiteachday · 01/05/2020 16:53
  • male in welsh
ishouldtryabiteachday · 01/05/2020 16:53

I don't mind Stirling. Or Flint or Flynn even. Rowan is a boys name here UK, the only ones I know are boys. So you could do that ?

Bronwen is the correct spelling for a girl the wyn version is make in welsh. I not so keen on this I agree it sounds harsh.

Indigo is nice, what about Luna (sun) instead of Lumen? Or even Lula ?

Swearwolf · 01/05/2020 16:47

Sterling is much nicer! Makes me think of Archer - perhaps not a great role model, but an awesome show nonetheless!
