Not for me sadly but was asked to post.
37 weeks so not long to go:

Cailín (the Gaelic word for girl)
Lumen
Polly
Elowen
Romilly
Cadence
Della
Evelyn (ev-lin)
Sabine (pr the french way ‘een’)
Delilah
Fiadh

Bit of a mixed bag there ...

OP posts:

DramaAlpaca Thanks for the info re Ev-lin. Very interesting.

Re Dublin Hipster. I'm not Irish (apart from a possible great-grandmother) so really I don't know. But a little while ago someone referred me to this article - which has a clever headline, if nothing else: www.irishtimes.com/opinion/deer-god-frank-mcnally-on-the-dramatic-surge-in-popularity-of-the-girl-s-name-fiadh-1.3811391

AvoidingTheWineAisle · 30/04/2020 17:22

Cadence is lovely. Makes me think of the musical term.

I like Polly a lot (a happy sort of name), and also Sabine (classy, strong).

DramaAlpaca · 30/04/2020 17:20

@florascotia2 thought you'd be interested to know that in Ireland, Evelyn is usually pronounced EV-lin, just the two syllables.

You are right about Cailín, it's more Coh-LEEN here, or would be if it was ever used! Coleen/Colleen is occasionally, but it's very dated.

I'm amused at Fiadh being thought of as 'Dublin hipster' Grin I've not heard that before, but as it's a non-traditional Irish name that might well be true. Popular nationwide now, though.

Umnoway · 30/04/2020 17:12

I only like Polly and Romilly.

Cadence is very American, Delilah just makes me think of the songs and Evelyn was super popular a decade ago (not sure whether it still is). I’ve honestly never heard of any of the other names.

florascotia2 · 30/04/2020 17:03

Pineapple in German and some other languages it's Za-bee-nuh or (almost) Za-bee-nah

PineappleDanish · 30/04/2020 16:59

Sabine (pr the french way ‘een’)

How else would you pronounce it? Sab-eye-n? Confused.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/04/2020 16:49

I notice you have put Not for me Sadly. Been asked to post. Why is this person asking you to post about names. Does she know it upsets you.
Can she not post herself.

Anyway my opinions.

Love

Elowen.
Fiadh.
Polly
Romilly.

Don't like the others.

MayFayner · 30/04/2020 16:17

Cailín - not used in Ireland as a girl’s name although you might come across the occasional (older) Coleen which is the Anglicised spelling.

I like Evelyn best out of the others.

Mucklowe · 30/04/2020 16:15

Cailín - gorgeous
Lumen - sounds like part of the reproductive system
Polly - alright
Elowen - a bit occultish
Romilly - stuck up
Cadence - horribly American
Della - 'of the' in Italian.
Evelyn (ev-lin) - lovely
Sabine (pr the french way ‘een’) - ugly
Delilah - hipster
Fiadh - gorgeous

FeedMeSantiago · 30/04/2020 16:11

Cailín (the Gaelic word for girl) - it's ok
Lumen - no, it sounds like a Harry Potter spell as a PP said
Polly - this is a slang term for fart where I grew up 'eurgh, the dog's done a polly'. It's a no from me.
Elowen - I love this Cornish name, v pretty
Romilly - I like this
Cadence - I know someone who has Cadence as a middle name, I like it
Della - not heard before, I like it
Evelyn (ev-lin) - I like this, I prefer Ev-uh-lin
Sabine (pr the french way ‘een’) - I like it, I also like Sabina and Sabrina
Delilah - "hey there Delilah" "why why why, Delilah" Stoke City FC. Reminds me of my emo phase. Not keen.
Fiadh - this is lovely, as is the Fia spelling.

Peachbubble · 30/04/2020 16:00

I like Elowen and Polly.

formerbabe · 30/04/2020 15:56

I love Sabine...not keen on the rest to be honest

BrooHaHa · 30/04/2020 15:40

I think name meanings are quite important, personally, so wouldn't call a child 'girl' or 'boy' because of the fact they grow into women and men and because it sounds like you just couldn't be bothered.

Lumen to me is a measure of the brightness of a lightbulb. Again, a no.

The rest I have no strong feelings about. I probably like Evelyn best.

FizzyGreenWater · 30/04/2020 15:34

I know it isn't, but Elowen sounds so Lord of the Rings that I'd avoid it. It sounds made up.

I hear that Fiadh is madly popular, like it, it will be mispronounced.

Cailin will get Caitlin FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE. Also, bit silly really - not a name.

Lumen, Cadence - not as interesting or nice sounding as you'd think. Also, nicknames - Loom? Kay? Hmm...

Like Polly

Evelyn will be pronounced the other way and there are MILLIONS of Eves/Evies.

Della - I have it in the Joyce, Sheila camp!

Delilah - fab
Sabine - fab, Sabina better.

florascotia2 · 30/04/2020 15:28

Sorry to be negative, but you did ask. And each to their own, of course:

Cailín (the Gaelic word for girl) In Scotland would be said something like Cah-lin; am not sure what Irish would say. It think it would be more like 'Coh-leen'.
Lumen - scientific term: unit of measurement of visible light
Polly - OK but I prefer the traditional Mary with nickname Polly
Elowen - means 'elm tree'; a modern name, a bit LOTR. Danger of getting the ubiquitous Ellie as a nickname
Romilly - place name
Cadence - musical term.
Della - OK but sounds (and is) the short form of a longer name (Adela)
Evelyn (ev-lin) Unusual pronoucination - surely its either Eve-lin or Ev-uh-lin?
Sabine (pr the french way ‘een’) Ok but prefer Sabina
Delilah - sorry, don't like the sound
Fiadh - means 'deer'; sometimes said to be 'Dublin hipster'. As PPs have said, danger of it being pronounced 'fear'

Notso · 30/04/2020 15:27

Cailín (the Gaelic word for girl)
One of the teen moms is called Cailin. It's ok but I think you might get Caitlin a lot as that's quite popular.
Lumen
Isn't this a lightbulb measurement now, a bit like calling your child Watt.
Polly it's ok.
Elowen
It's quite nice, not exactly sure in pronunciation though, Elle-owen or Ello-when.
Romilly
Love this name. I know one who has nn Romy also like Milly as a nn too.
Cadence
Don't like it.
Della
I like Della.
Evelyn (ev-lin)
Too many Eves and Evie's already.
Sabine (pr the french way ‘een’)
Probably will get Sabrina. I know a few Mums called Sabine so it seems like an old name to me.
Delilah
I love Delilah.
Fiadh
No idea how to pronounce this Fidah? Feev?

MrsMonicaBing · 30/04/2020 15:23

Polly!

packetandtripe · 30/04/2020 15:22

Fiadh is beautiful, at a push Elowen. But no way lumen, inside of blood vessels etc. why would anyone name a baby that?

MrsBuckette · 30/04/2020 15:02

Is Fiadh pronounced Fia like Mia and Pia?

I like Romilly and Della.

Lumen sounds like a disease

indemMUND · 30/04/2020 15:02

Lumen is great

raindrop83 · 30/04/2020 14:58

I usually like unusual names but not any of those...

daisypond · 30/04/2020 14:39

Not keen on Lumen or Delilah.
Fiadh you’ll have problems with outside of Ireland.
I prefer Sabina to Sabine - which is too associated in art and sculpture with the Rape of the Sabine Women. Pronounced differently, though.
Cadence is music to me, rather than engineering.
Olwen?

LotusClover · 30/04/2020 14:30

Cadence was the name of my favourite character on an online game I played as a kid, so I love this name despite a lot of people not being too keen. I quite like Delilah and Romilly too. Evelyn is one of my favourite names, but only if it's pronounced ev-uh-lin - not the way you suggested in your post.

Don't like any of the others.

Shockers · 30/04/2020 14:24

I like Romilly best. What was the book with either a child, or a doll, named Romilly?

IndiaMay · 30/04/2020 14:22

My fave is Romilly. Its been my favourite girls name for 10 years now and I've seen it on 6 threads this week!
