what's the consensus on pronunciation, and thoughts on Minty, Minnie and Clem/Clemmie (prefer first two but don't mind any)

I love this name! It is absolutely gorgeous. The one Clementine I know is known as Clemmie by everyone (she is in her 30s).

lakeswimmer · 01/05/2020 19:54

It's a lovely name - I really like it. I think Clem/Clemmie are fine for NN. I know a Clemency who is known as Clem.

Fromthebirdsnest · 01/05/2020 19:48

I have a niece called Clementine .. We call her clemmy or minnie ...when her brother is being mean he calls her clammy 🙈 ... I do love the name though .. I have another niece called Romilly and another called Kitty and another called ottilie (tilly) and a God daughter called Florence (florrie) big family 😂😂, I thought they were your style of name so worth a mention x

ConnieDoodle · 01/05/2020 19:26

Ive already voted once but im going to vote again Grin clementine Pronounced eeen.

SpratsOnParade · 01/05/2020 18:35

It's awful.

Pemba · 01/05/2020 18:27

It's no good just saying that you 'pronounce it as spelt' is it? That could be either way - Clement-tyne to rhyme with Caroline and wine (as in the famous song), or Clement -een to rhyme with Josephine and bean.

Both pronunciations are recognised in the UK. Both are nice IMO. Pretty name.

olympicsrock · 01/05/2020 18:22

Clementine is lovely and I would go with clemmie for a Diminutive. It’s clemEntine not ClemIntine so Minnie and Minty don’t really work IMO

daisypond · 01/05/2020 18:18

Clemen-teen, as in Churchill’s wife, if you are in the UK. The Tyne pronunciation is Aus/US.
I really dislike Clem or Clemmie, though. Tina would be better than either. Or Lemon.

SnowdropFox · 30/04/2020 17:28

Love Clementine. On my list for any future dd! I knew one growing up and thought her name was just beautiful.

Umnoway · 30/04/2020 17:02

Also Clementine is a mainstream name and has been for hundreds of years. Mango and Apple just aren’t unless you’re a member of Coldplay.

Minty does make me think of the mechanic on Eastenders Grin.

Umnoway · 30/04/2020 17:01

It’s on our list if we have a girl (chose not to find out the sex). I don’t shorten my DC’s names though so can’t comment on NN’s.

SleepingIsOverrated · 30/04/2020 16:42

I think it's beautiful but I absolutely CANNOT get the Mark Owen song of the same name out of my head now!!

Mucklowe · 30/04/2020 16:13

Any nickname is better than Clem. It sounds like Victorian slang for the vagina.

Poodles03 · 30/04/2020 16:04

Clementine is nice. It's a bit goody-goody for my taste, but I knew an old lady once called Clemmie, and she was gorgeous.

You can't use Minty. That was that horrible fat slob bloke from EastEnders in the 90s, otherwise it sounds like a drug dealer.

LotusClover · 30/04/2020 15:07

@raindrop83 I know that. That's why I said, I'm aware that Clementine is a mainstream name. My point was that regardless of whether it's a name or not, I automatically associate Clementine with the fruit when I hear it.

raindrop83 · 30/04/2020 14:55

But Mango isn't a name in its own right, Clementine is!

LotusClover · 30/04/2020 13:50

Sorry, but I really dislike it. It's a fruit. You wouldn't call your child Mango, would you? I know Clementine is a fairly mainstream name but every time I hear it I still picture an orange, rather than a child with it as their name. Don't like the nicknames Clem or Clemmy either.

ConnieDoodle · 30/04/2020 11:48

It’s a lovely name. I immediately pronounce it with a rhyme to ‘mean’ at the end (because i remember the cartoon).

Clemencia is similar.

Cbeebiesrehab · 30/04/2020 11:43

I quite like Clementine but not Clem or Clemmie for reasons mentioned upthread. I think if you want her to be known as Minnie or Minty then introduce that as a diminutive from day one. My daughters day to day name is not the usual diminutive for her BC name but she’s been called if from day one so no one has ever questioned it and it’s the name she identifies as. She would never go by the more ‘usual’ diminutive now as it’s just not her name.

toughgetsgoing · 30/04/2020 11:43

Yes I do like it and no ones mentioned teasing - any name can get it after all. Like Minty from Araminta but not brave enough to use it since it's a name that even smart people think is too humorously posh to use. At the end of the day she has some flexibility with Clementine and I don't mind any nickname apart from Emmie which I admittedly dislike but doubt she will use.

NoLongerAnEasyTarget · 30/04/2020 11:39

Sorry I dont like it. I get that awful cowboy song in my head when I hear it. Oh my darlin, oh my darlin, oh my daaaaaaarrrrlin Clementine 😖

raindrop83 · 30/04/2020 11:36

Minty just makes me think of the Eastenders character from years ago! I've never heard of it being used as a nickname for Clementine though, not sure where that's come from!

rooarsome · 30/04/2020 11:21

Where I live "minty" means something is crap. Clementine reminds me of Westworld 😊

raindrop83 · 30/04/2020 11:19

@toughgetsgoing thing is you have to be confident with your choice...what are your other options?

toughgetsgoing · 30/04/2020 11:09

@raindrop83 just because I know any name can get teased blah blah but Clementine is a fruit ?? I think it should be fine because no one's said she will get teased though :)
