What are your honest opinions on having a flower name for a girl when surname is Rose? So far we like Poppy and Ivy but dont know if it's a bit much with the surname. I love Florence but not keen on any of the nicknames for it Sad

Violet Rose sounds fab!
No middle name required as thinking down the line if she marries, Rose can be used as her middle name

It doesn’t work as most people would assume it’s a double barrelled first name and would forever be asking what the surname. If it was something like Poppy Rose I would check whether there was a surname as sounds odd and like a crafted floral Christian name.

Flower or colour name with rose^

Mumma4262 · 28/04/2020 06:08

Personally I wouldn’t give your daughter a flower or colour rose. I think something like Jade Rose for example would be too much as would Poppy it Daisy Rose.

It’s a shame as there are a lot of pretty female colour and flower names.

I think a double floral name will be over kill & make it look incomplete. People might think Rose is the middle name and ask for the surname as well.

If you really want a floral first name then the following might work:
Azalea Rose
Violet Rose
Heather Rose
Iris Rose
Willow Rose (not a flower but works)
Fern Rose (ditto)
Have a look at the name website for ideas.

I think Delilah Rose works really well.

I think Ivy Rose sounds amazing. I wouldn't bother with a middle name. Think that sounds perfect x

daisypond · 28/04/2020 04:22

I would avoid flower names.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/04/2020 00:33

I think it's oka y. With Rose being a very popular middle name as well as surname people are always going to get confused wether Rose is her surname middle of hyphenated n ame. There's not much you can do about that. Therefore you might as well go for a name you love.

Lily Rose

Felicity Rose

I have a friend who gained a short surname on marriage that is also a common girls first name, her first name is also short and everyone thinks she has a hyphenated first name and waits for her to give her surname. A longer name with more syllables, whether it is a flower name or not, would be much better with a Rose surname. My friend gave her daughter a long name Gabriella which didn’t “go together as a hyphenated name” with her surname to avoid this confusion.

tempestterra · 27/04/2020 23:44

I think the issue with using Poppy / Ivy and then having Rose, makes it sound like it's a hyphenated name so I can see people thinking she is called 'Poppy-Rose'.
I really like 'Florrie/ Flossie' as shortened versions of Florence. As much as I like flower names, I think it might be tricky to pull off given your last name, unless you go for a more unusual / longer flower/ shrub type name.

Poppy sounds lovely, not keen on Ivy (poison ivy connotations).
Also could consider
Briar
Bryony
Violet
Jasmine
Lily
Ayanna
Camellia
Leilani

If a girl told me their name was Poppy Rose, I’d think it was a double barrelled first name. However, on reflection I’d also think that about a Chloe Rose or an Alice Rose. Or at least I’d need to clarify it with them.

In short 2 flower names are fine.

FiveOutOfFiveGoldblums · 27/04/2020 23:32

Lily Rose is beautiful

NotMyNigel · 27/04/2020 23:31

No sorry, flower names won’t work for you.

You need a polysyllabic first name too.

Staffori · 27/04/2020 23:24

I think they're lovely, personally. Just don't make any middle names flowers too.
