Long version for Penny

Hi all, i'm currently past my due date and awaiting the arrival of baby. I don't know what I'm having (very exciting!)
My partner and I are still undecided on names. We think we have a boys name chosen, but still undecided if it's a girl.
I love Penny for a little girl but I'm not a huge fan of Penelope. However I don't like the idea of giving baby a shortened name on their birth certificate.

What other names can be shortened to Penny?

I knew a Penny who was actually Stephanie!! Apparently her little sister used to say Steph-penny and it stuck!!

VirginWestCoast · 28/04/2020 13:31

I'd go for either Penelope or Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
Depends how bad the labour is.

Floofsquidge · 28/04/2020 13:26

Mapenzie?

@toughgetsgoing

Why do you think Penny isn't a serious name???

There are famous and successful women called Penny! The ones I know are high up in their chosen careers...

If you wish to have an alternative give a middle name.

Thefaceofboe · 28/04/2020 11:42

Spencer and Aspen are good suggestions OP, although if she’s Penny I imagine people will presume she’s either just Penny or Penelope

toughgetsgoing · 28/04/2020 11:27

Pick another name or have it as a middle and call her that - worst option is to force yourself to put Pennifer on her bc that defeats the point of a nickname

Summerloving16 · 28/04/2020 11:15

I would highly recommend not putting a name you don’t like just to have ‘options’ as the world of MN declare!
I agree with the above poster it’s a name they are called more often than people assume so I would strongly advise you to think about putting a name you won’t ever use or my the sounds of it not even that keen on.
Penny is a lovely name

toughgetsgoing · 28/04/2020 11:14

Honestly Penny isn't a serious name - just give her something else like Emma and say her sibling called her Penny when they were young and it stuck, or put it as a middle name

Ridingthegravytrain · 28/04/2020 10:50

Pennywise Wink

RandomMess · 28/04/2020 10:48

Seriously just put Penny on the birth certificate...

Don't put on a name you will never use, it's just extra hassle for her tbh!

If she ever gets married it's the name on her certificate used, her passport and driving license will all have Penelope on 🤷🏽‍♀️

sunnymamaroo · 28/04/2020 10:37

Haha this thread has made me have a good laugh so thanks! With the oxytocin flowing hopefully I'll go into labour. I don't think you've swayed me with Pennifer Or Penjamin though. Grin

OK it's given me food for thought, so thank you. I think ultimately if it's a girl I'll put Penelope on the birth certificate but just call baby Penny from the off. Then, like a few others suggested, she has the option to use other shortened versions when she's older.

Just need he or she to be born now!

Aspen?

peperethecat · 28/04/2020 09:45

Penelope is gorgeous. Honestly I would put that on the birth certificate.

Penny on its own is not a very "serious" name and all these other options just sound contrived.

I love the name Tuppence

If you do name your child this OP, please don’t ever visit Yorkshire with her 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

CakeHoleinRoof · 28/04/2020 09:23

Penguin.

userabcname · 28/04/2020 09:19

Spencer! I actually love this name for a girl after watching pretty little liars.

MikeUniformMike · 28/04/2020 09:12

Tuppence makes me think of tupping. Not a good association.

CandyLeBonBon · 28/04/2020 09:12

Pennyrose

TKAAHUARTG · 28/04/2020 08:58

Thrupenny or ha’penny. Bit rude maybe.

Staticelle · 28/04/2020 08:52

I actually really like Pennifer!

IGottaGetOuttaThisPlace · 28/04/2020 08:43

I love the name Tuppence

MikeUniformMike · 28/04/2020 08:42

I know a Pennie who is just Pennie. I also know four Penelopes who are always known as Penny.

Thefaceofboe · 27/04/2020 22:48

Pennifer Grin Penjamin Grin just spat out my tea. Just call her Penny

worstwitch18 · 27/04/2020 22:47

yellowcakestand nicknames have been around for centuries and are hardly confusing.

I think Penelope is the only name that is standard with Penny as a nickname. I do think it's a beautiful name (I know you're not a big fan). I know a Penny who is about 20, she is Penelope on her birth certificate but Penny in everyday life and has been since birth. Works well.
