Is Dorothy too old fashioned?

I absolutely love the name, my husband does too, and it’s one of the few girls’ names we really agree on. It also has a very meaningful family connection on both my side and his.

But is it too old fashioned? Will we be saddling her with a cumbersome, out if date name?

Love it!

DramaAlpaca · 26/04/2020 14:55

I think it's fabulous.

mintich · 26/04/2020 14:55

I love it!

BettyCrockaShit · 26/04/2020 14:41

It's a little old fashioned, but I still like it. If you wanted a more modern spin, maybe Dorothea? I had a great girl in my class recently with the name - went by Thea as a nickname.

SpratsOnParade · 26/04/2020 13:42

It's a lovely name.

zscaler · 26/04/2020 13:17

Thank you so much everyone - it’s nice to hear that responses are mostly positive, makes me feel more secure in the choice!

It's no more old fashioned than Florence, Constance or Elsie (all quite popular) and I like it better than any of those. A strong association with the little girl setting off down the Yellow Brick Road. The meaning 'gift of God' is nice.

I like Dorothea too.

Peachbubble · 26/04/2020 12:06

I like it and Dottie.

PeskyRooks · 26/04/2020 11:58

I have a 4 year old Dottie so I love it! ❤❤

OneKeyAtATime · 26/04/2020 11:53

I like it

123Dancewithme · 26/04/2020 11:48

It’s definitely making a comeback. I like it!

Miljea · 26/04/2020 11:40

I've surprised myself by saying I really like it! I am of an age (late 50s) to have had great aunts named that, as well 😊.

I like Dot as a nickname, too.

LotusClover · 26/04/2020 11:34

It's nice. I'm not a fan of most of the old names making a comeback but I quite like Dorothy. Not so keen on the nickname Dotty/Dottie as it's a bit cutesy but it'll be alright while she's young.

Gtugccbjb · 26/04/2020 11:26

Nice name but a mouthful. Like Catherine or Caroline. Too long.

VisionQuest · 26/04/2020 11:24

I actually really like this name. Dottie is very cute too.

Dot, not so much as obviously has the Dot Cotton connotation

Ellmau · 26/04/2020 11:20

Or Dorothea might have a more modern sound to it if you wanted.

HarrietTheShy · 26/04/2020 11:18

Love it. Smile And as per previous posts, tons of NN options if needed: Dot, Dolly, Dora, Dory, Dodie.

TheVanguardSix · 26/04/2020 11:07

I love it. My friend's daughter is Dorothy and they call her Dottie, which is lovely.

Whatsyourflava · 26/04/2020 11:05

It’s a great choice of name! Love it. I also like Theodora.

bruffin · 26/04/2020 11:01

My nan was Dorothy and my mum had it as one of her names. Nan was often called Doll or Dolly

Litthefirealready · 26/04/2020 10:59

I think it’s lovely.

merryhouse · 26/04/2020 10:58

Thirty years ago Emily was old-fashioned. Twenty years ago Violet was old-fashioned.

Dorothy is probably just about to take off.

ALovelyBitOfSquirrel · 26/04/2020 10:57

It's lovely! Amongst so many Freyas, Islas and whatever other popular names there too many of, it is a breath of fresh air.

Soon2BeMumof3 · 26/04/2020 10:52

Adorable. And Dot/Dotty is a cute nickname as well.

zscaler · 26/04/2020 10:49

Thank you everyone - I feel much reassured!
