Is Dorothy too old fashioned?

I absolutely love the name, my husband does too, and it’s one of the few girls’ names we really agree on. It also has a very meaningful family connection on both my side and his.

But is it too old fashioned? Will we be saddling her with a cumbersome, out if date name?

We nearly went with Dorothea. Part of me is still sad we didn't. Our daughter would've made an awesome Dot.

35andThriving · 26/04/2020 22:14

I think it's lovely. Others obviously do too as it has been moving up the name charts for a few years Smile

DennisTMenace · 26/04/2020 20:13

Really love it. Was on my girl name list, but I had boys instead.

Thepalebluedot · 26/04/2020 19:28

Great name! I have an Auntie Dorothy (who is 93 and she's just beaten the dreaded virus!) Love it when old names make a come back Smile

MinkowskisButterfly · 26/04/2020 19:23

Love it!

ladybird69 · 26/04/2020 19:22

Love the name, it’s an old fashioned one but a nice one

OddBoots · 26/04/2020 19:18

It's lovely and in this time of rainbows everywhere then a name that is 'somewhere over the rainbow' is especially apt.

Lesserspottedmama · 26/04/2020 19:09

It’s wonderful, I love it. I like Dorothea as well.

Love it

Mumshappy · 26/04/2020 18:11

I love Dorothy. If ds2 had been a girl he would have been Dorothy.

RuthW · 26/04/2020 18:08

Dorothy isn't old fashioned, it's a classic name that is growing in popularity. I like it.

EngagedAgain · 26/04/2020 17:10

Makes a refreshing change I think.

totallynotchanging · 26/04/2020 17:09

It's beautiful, and the whole "friends of Dorothy" thing is old hat now. Dorothea is pretty too.

ilovepuggies · 26/04/2020 16:57

It’s a beautiful name go for it!

saffy1234 · 26/04/2020 16:52

My daughter is called Dorothy
She's 4 on Tuesday,I receive nothing but compliments about her name either!

ViolaF · 26/04/2020 16:52

This is on our list too - I love it. How popular is it at the moment? Great feedback from everyone, that's helped us with the same concern too :)

working5to9 · 26/04/2020 15:41

I know a Dorothy who must be 16 or so now. When she was born, I was really surprised at the name and it remains unusual amongst her friends.
Amongst the current popular baby names, I think it will fit in.

BarbaraBeast · 26/04/2020 15:37

This has reminded me how much I love the name Dorothy so thank you for making this thread! Pushing that up to the very top of our name list as we speak. Absolutely lovely name with so many nice nicknames.

MikeUniformMike · 26/04/2020 15:06

No, it's lovely.
Dot/Dottie is cute as a nn, or you could use Dolly.

I don't like Dorothea.

Jellycatfox · 26/04/2020 15:06

And what @MadameJosephine said. Love Dorothy, hate Dorothea

Jellycatfox · 26/04/2020 15:05

I love it :-)

MadameJosephine · 26/04/2020 15:03

Gorgeous. Much prefer it to Dorothea, that’s just a syllable too much for me

BeTheHokeyMan · 26/04/2020 15:01

It's beautiful love it

DarkDarkNight · 26/04/2020 15:00

I’m not really keen. I can imagine a toddler Dottie but I don’t really like it for a teenager or young adult.

Agree with the poster who said Dorothea which would allow for Thea as a nickname along with Dot/Dottie.
