I love the name Amelie and my husband wants Amelia. I like Amelia a lot but love Amelie as much softer but is it too French? We're not French.

Neither if I'm honest
Amelia is boring and Amelie is dated and sounds rubbish in an English accent

123Dancewithme · 26/04/2020 12:31

How about Amalia instead?

LotusClover · 26/04/2020 11:48

Amelie will be misread as Amelia and misheard as Emily. Which is a shame because it's a nice name.

Amelia is lovely but its class seems to have been killed off a bit by its over popularity, which is also a shame.

I'd just go for something different unless you're totally set on one of these names.

HotCrossBungle · 25/04/2020 21:00

Amelie

Pinkypink · 25/04/2020 20:50

Prefer Amelie (by miles) and def dont need to have any French heritage or whatever to use it

MikeUniformMike · 25/04/2020 18:53

Amelia is overused. I don't like it because of the Me bit, and it is a condition.
Amelie is one of those names that look pretty but sound weak.

Emily is much nicer.

missmouse101 · 25/04/2020 18:18

Amelia has the awful 'mealy' sound in it so I really dislike it. Amelie is ok, but just sounds like Ammer-Lee and somehow therefore doesn't sound as nice as it looks. Amalia as a pp suggested is nice.

ajandjjmum · 25/04/2020 18:05

I love Amelie.

Darcy224 · 25/04/2020 18:05

I like both, but swaying slightly more towards Amelie

georgialondon · 25/04/2020 18:04

I love Amelie but really not keen on Amelia

phoenixrosehere · 25/04/2020 18:02

Love Amelie!

It doesn’t matter that you’re not French nor is it pretentious. It’s about if you love the name and if looking at your baby you feel it fits. That’s it!

Many names come from one root name and different countries write and pronounce it in their own languages.

NameChange30 · 25/04/2020 17:59

"I only know old ladies called Amelia."

Ridiculous. It was the second most popular girl's name in England & Wales in 2018. It's been in the top 5 for years.

bridgetreilly · 25/04/2020 17:52

@Chiyo666 Since Phoebe is a Greek name and Samuel Hebrew, but both are biblical names, I don't think it's particularly pretentious to use them, no. Chloe in its anglicised form is fine, but people putting the accent on looks and sounds ridiculous, imo.

OhLaLlol · 25/04/2020 17:24

Amelie is gorgeous.

3rdNamechange · 25/04/2020 17:09

Amelie , it's lovely, you don't have to be French to use it.

Ditheringdooley · 25/04/2020 17:08

Speaking as a French Amelie, who is always called Amelia in the UK!!!

Ditheringdooley · 25/04/2020 17:08

Milly/ Millie would be a nickname, not a given name, surely? Can’t imagine a grown up Milly.

Emilia is an alternative spelling I think - as in Fox? Less common than Amelia (which is lovely). People would assume you are French with Amelie and would be callling her Amelia anyway.

Chiyo666 · 25/04/2020 17:07

Amelie is much nicer. I only know old ladies called Amelia.
And using a foreign name doesn’t make you pretentious, what a stupid thing to say @bridgetreilly. Do you think that about Phoebe, Samuel and Chloe too?

Blursula · 25/04/2020 17:04

Sorry pressed post too soon! She goes by Marley. I think it’s lovely

Blursula · 25/04/2020 17:04

As a middle ground I also know an Amalia - pronounced a-MAR-lia

Blursula · 25/04/2020 17:03

Amelie

Peachbubble · 25/04/2020 15:43

I prefer Amelie.

bridgetreilly · 25/04/2020 15:23

*French.

bridgetreilly · 25/04/2020 15:23

I don't like Amelie nearly as much as Amelia. I think that if you aren't Frence, Amelie sounds really pretentious.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 25/04/2020 15:18

I prefer Amelie
