Arthur or Rupert?

Mum2B36 · 22/04/2020 23:35

Hello

After much deliberation I think DH and I have narrowed our boys list to Arthur or Rupert. We like both these names.

My concerns are:

  1. Arthur is suddenly super popular - he will be one of many Arthurs in his class; and
  2. Rupert is persevered by some as pretentious. I am aware of the army slang term.

Really welcome your thoughts. We did have Albert (Albie) on the list but think Albert is maybe just a bit too out there for us.

Thanks

Thanks all. I think Rupert is now our favourite but we have a couple of months to decide for sure.

Arthur.

I prefer Rupert. It has more individuality. I don’t dislike Arthur or Albert, though, but they are part of a certain trend of names.

Smile19 · 24/04/2020 18:10

Rupert is lovely! That would be my choice. All your names are fab so go with what feels right. Good luck.

Whatsyourflava · 23/04/2020 11:11

I love both Arthur and Rupert
I don’t think of Albert as “out there” at all by the way
Arthur is getting more popular but I’ve not actually met one

WendyDarling888 · 23/04/2020 11:11

Albert is the best, nn Albie.

But they are all very wet fish names (sorry). Not my cup of tea.

Mum2B36 · 23/04/2020 09:48

Thanks everyone! I think you can check to see how popular names are in your area so I might do that. We are Surrey/south London. This is my first dc so not really sure how popular Arthur would be here but I have heard it a few times in the local parks.

I think Rupert is now our favourite based on your comments.

One of my cats is called Rupert, so I clearly love that name, Arthur is lovely as well, you can’t go wrong with either imo.

Sewingbea · 23/04/2020 09:29

Bracket in the wrong place but I'm sure you get the idea....

Sewingbea · 23/04/2020 09:27

@emmathedilemma In army terms the phrase "he's a bit of a Rupert" used to refer to a posh (usually cavalry officer) who wore red trousers and was a bit of a twit. There is a website - look at my f* red trousers - if you are very interested Grin

BellsofStClems · 23/04/2020 09:21

Rupert! nn Roo

redwoodmazza · 23/04/2020 09:19

One of our cats is Albert - Albie for short!!!

emmathedilemma · 23/04/2020 08:59

I love Arthur and I don't think Albert is any more out there.
Not a fan of Rupert (and will have to google what the army connection is!).

Shockers · 23/04/2020 08:53

I love Rupert. I named our first family dog Rupert when I was 4 (50 years ago Shock) because I loved it then. I still love it now!

He was a grand dog too.

Mammyloveswine · 23/04/2020 08:50

I love Rupert!

What about Albert nn Bertie?

toastofthetown · 23/04/2020 08:27

I prefer Arthur, however if popularity is a concern then maybe Rupert would be better for you. Both lovely names. Name popularity tends to be quite localised so Rupert might be more popular than Arthur, with no Arthur's in your son's class, but unless you know a lot of babies in your area this can hard to tell before you start meeting other babies. Rupert is rising rapidly in the rankings and will probably be in the top 100 when the 2019 names are published.

userabcname · 23/04/2020 06:57

I prefer Arthur but I do know quite a few babies/toddlers with this name so if you want the less popular, go for Rupert.

Elephantonascooter · 23/04/2020 06:46

Rupert is my sons name! Don't care if its outing! I love it, so many people complimented us on it. Like pp said, as long as you don't go around mentioning makes of cars, ski resorts and private schools, you're fine!
Lots of nicknames for Rupert too. I was also aware of the army slang term, no one by DF has mentioned it to us.
Imo, Arthur is very common at the moment, there are 4 at DS nursery. I don't know another Rupert though.

Mumma4262 · 23/04/2020 06:32

I much prefer Arthur! And I know a little Albert, who goes by Albert.

mynameisMrG · 23/04/2020 03:41

I have an Arthur and an Albert 😊 I agree Arthur has hugely jumped up in popularity in the last few years so if that’s an issue for you Rupert is a lovely name too

Peachbubble · 23/04/2020 03:38

Rupert

babynamelover · 23/04/2020 02:54

If popularity worries you more go with Rupert :).

Astronica · 23/04/2020 00:37
