No man is an Island

Plenty of die-hard TT Race fans would strongly disagree with you there....

Hayfevered · 24/04/2020 12:33

I mean, I know Emo Court used to be a Jesuit training college, but still, every time I imagine it, I see the Jesuits wearing eyeliner and listening to My Chemical Romance.

campion · 24/04/2020 12:24

Prefer Wales. More appropriate for a baby.

JaneJeffer · 24/04/2020 12:21

I hope it is a Shangri-La for goths Hayfevered Grin

Hayfevered · 24/04/2020 12:15

@JaneJeffer, I have always avoided going to Emo to preserve my illusion that it's inhabited solely by misunderstood teenagers wearing panda rings of black eyeliner with carefully-tended Bebo pages.

Oh I know of a girl called Irish, she’s probably about 18 now

JaneJeffer · 24/04/2020 11:40

Well at least then they could be called Stan for short, better than Land.

FlaskMaster · 24/04/2020 11:38

No man is an Island. But op's kid comes pretty close.
Place names are some people's cup of tea, but FFS don't pick one that ends in "land". Or "stan" for that matter.

JaneJeffer · 24/04/2020 11:36

Or Emo Hayfevered?

RingaRosie · 24/04/2020 11:29

Folk would hear “Isla” as it’s a popular name. A soft R is quite common in parts of the UK, unlike the hard R you hear in Ireland (the name, and the place.
My name sounds totally different, in different accents, due to the R in the middle.

On another thread, we've been discussing the dearth of babies called Fermanagh, Belturbet, Tubbercurry, and Borris-in-Ossory. And surely there's a Goth somewhere dying to call a baby Schull...? Grin

There’s lots of lovely Irish names based on places that people do like; Clodagh, Kerry, Erin.

There's nothing wrong with it at all - it's a very nice name - but until the day I die, I will never be able to hear the name Clodagh without thinking of the TOG who used to regularly write in to Terry Wogan: Clodagh Rubbish Grin

Ritascornershop · 24/04/2020 05:18

When a friend of a friend was pregnant she floated the name Ireland (this is in Canada). Everyone’s quiet response and horrified faces put a stop to it.

No

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/04/2020 04:30

Offaly would be a terrific name for any child, especially if your surname is also (or sounds like) an adjective.

Compere: "Ladies and Gentlemen, tonight in this club, it's Offaly Deere!"
Audience (as one): "It certainly is, so get on with it and introduce the next act!"

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/04/2020 04:23

Tipperary rolls off the tongue

It's actually the full given first name of Al Gore's wife.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/04/2020 04:21

Fermanagh could grow on me

Nudge the pronunciation gap one letter to the right, though, and it just sounds like the professional name of a particularly strict dominatrix to me Grin

Hayfevered · 23/04/2020 23:47

Fermanagh could grow on me, @FancyPants20. But why stop at counties? ‘Borris-in-Ossory, your tea’s poured out!’ ‘Tubbercurry, get up to bed!’ ‘Belmullet, where’s your lunchbox?’

nicky7654 · 23/04/2020 23:35

Confused um as in a baby name?? Do you not actually like real names for children?

AngelaScandal · 23/04/2020 23:10

Jane 😂

JaneJeffer · 23/04/2020 22:00

@ClaraMumsnet I see the majority of deletions are the OP's own posts though!

By the way are you named after the town in Co. Offaly? Grin

FancyPants20 · 23/04/2020 21:41

Could be worse, I suppose. You could want to call the child after counties in Ireland. "Fermanagh, come in for your tea!" "Cahrk! Cahrk!! Stop shovin' your finger up your nose, FGS." "Sligoooo, come down offa that slide before you hurt yourself!"
