Not Freddie or Frederick, just Fred?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

CountFosco but he was known universally as Tony. Whatever you might have thought of him, it didn’t do him any harm being Tony rather than Anthony. Being called Fred as an adult in 20-30 years time will be fine.

Elsiebear90 · 22/04/2020 16:06

I prefer Frederick, it’s our first choice for a boys name, I love that it’s versatile so he could go by Fred or Freddie as well, but I like Fred.

Cosyblanky · 22/04/2020 15:54

So Fred means the same as Fredrick?
Does that go for Rick as well? Or does only the first part of the name count? So if I loved the name Rick and called my son it, it would mean the same as Richard, not Fredrick?

totallyyesno · 22/04/2020 15:48

TBF Freddie is no more a "proper" name than Fred!

totallyyesno · 22/04/2020 15:47

@Cosyblanky - of course it does - it has the same meaning as Frederick!

I call my son Fred but he does have a full name too. In fact, I love the name Fred but I'm the only one that uses it.

CountFosco · 22/04/2020 15:46

I wouldn’t worry about short names not being ‘official’ enough. Tony Blair didn’t have any problem.

That would be because his name is Anthony Charles Lynton Blair.

Cosyblanky · 22/04/2020 15:42

Because Milicent it has no meaning. I happen to think the meaning of a name is extremely important

Fantasiaa · 22/04/2020 15:34

I don’t like it. Nothing offensive about it but I prefer Frederick or freddie or Wilfred more

Happyralphymummy · 22/04/2020 15:09

I'd think it was short for something else and, suspect that you would be repeatedly asked what his full name is. I also now have "I'm too sexy for my shirt" stuck in my head.

MiniTheMinx · 22/04/2020 15:03

love it
DS2 has Frederick as his middle name. If it had been his first name I'd have called him Fred.

MillicentMartha · 22/04/2020 15:01

@Cosyblanky why ever not?

Cosyblanky · 22/04/2020 14:54

Just why would you think naming your child Fred was a good idea?

shivermetimbers77 · 22/04/2020 14:53

Love it!

irisheyesaresmiling7 · 22/04/2020 14:53

I absolutely love it!

It's one of my boy's nicknames even though his real name is nothing remotely related to it Blush and his real name is actually shorter than Fred.
I would definitely use it and put Fred on the BC but then all my five boys have the shorter versions of their names on their BC.

Whatsyourflava · 22/04/2020 14:51

You might also like Sid or Syd

Whatsyourflava · 22/04/2020 14:51

Really like Fred!

MillicentMartha · 22/04/2020 14:48

I wouldn’t worry about short names not being ‘official’ enough. Tony Blair didn’t have any problem.

I prefer Fred with Freddie as a nickname actually, over Frederick.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/04/2020 14:47

Good choice for a Bassett hound.

nitgel · 22/04/2020 14:47

nice, not heard of one (apart from fil who was a Frederick)

TerribleCustomerCervix · 22/04/2020 14:46

Love it, much more than Freddie.

BikeRunSki · 22/04/2020 14:46

The only Freds I know are Wilfreds

Spanneroo · 22/04/2020 14:45

Our littlest is Wilfred. We have shortened it to Wilf at the moment but I will be just as happy with Fred if he chooses when he's older. It's a good solid name.

Thisismytimetoshine · 22/04/2020 14:44

It's very flat cap and whippet, I think.

87Callista · 22/04/2020 14:44

Drop dead gorgeous.

Oj, but I do like it. He can be Freddie as a LO and Fred when he hits late teens?

SallyWD · 22/04/2020 14:44

I always prefer a full name on the birth certificate even if it's hardly ever used. Imagine if your son became Prime Minister or a top judge or something and was just called Fred. Frederick is nice but I prefer Alfred for Fred.
