I didn't think this name would be so unpopular

So all throughout my pregnancy, my husband and I kept our baby name choices to ourselves. My baby is now 2 months old, and nearly everyone we have met or spoken to, have mispronounced it. Granted, we haven't seen many people over the last few weeks, so now I'm starting to wonder if it's just my family or if it's really so unheard of?
My baby boy is called Cillian (DH Irish). My whole family pronounce it silly-an even when I've corrected them numerous times.
Can I ask if you would know how to pronounce Cillian? I'm worried I've set him up for a lifetime correcting people.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I think slot of English people would pronounce it Silly an but should know how to say it once corrected. I'm sorry your family keep mis pronouncing it. If they are genuinely finding it difficult can you ask them to imagine the C is a K?

If it was Kill an wouldn't I start with a K.

VideographybyLouBloom · 21/04/2020 19:16

I know it’s Kill-ee-an but that’s because my family is Irish and my children have Irish names.
It’s one of my favourite boys names OP. Just keep correcting people; they’ll get it eventually.

Notredamn · 21/04/2020 19:16

It's Killi-an.

Surely it only takes one correction before your family get it right? It's not difficult.

Megan2018 · 21/04/2020 19:15

I work with a Kill-eee-an so that’s how I’d say it.

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 21/04/2020 19:15

Cillian murphy. Lovely name. Your family are being arses if they continue to mispronounce it after you've corrected them

TrickyKid · 21/04/2020 19:15

I would pronounce it the same way as your family do. I've never heard it before so would pronounce how it's spelt.

Lindy2 · 21/04/2020 19:15

I'd assume, Sill ee an, if I had to take a guess. (Like Cilla)

I'd only have to be told once though that it was a K sound not a soft C to be able to get it right after that. It's not a tricky name once someone has been told the way to say it.

MikeUniformMike · 21/04/2020 19:15

Killian, like Lillian or Gillian.
or Kill Ian Grin

TheWordmeister · 21/04/2020 19:14

Silly-un

But I have no idea.

Bubblysqueak · 21/04/2020 19:14

I read it as Silly-Ann, how is it supposed to be pronounced?

Smurf123 · 21/04/2020 19:12

Kill ee in 🙂 - northern irish here cillian us a popular name. I think it's lovely

LouLouLoo · 21/04/2020 19:12

Silly-an for me too.

SushiGo · 21/04/2020 19:12

I wouldn't worry about it too much if you like the name, everyone will learn quickly how to say it.

Once they are at nursery/pre-school this kind of thing is much easier as other kids don't seem to have the issue with learning their friends names that adults seem to!!

Lovely name, congratulations.

PaquitaVariation · 21/04/2020 19:11

I know how to pronounce it but I can see why lots of people get it wrong.

Dyrne · 21/04/2020 19:11

To be honest your family are twats if they still insist on pronouncing it wrong even after you’ve corrected them multiple times. Are they making some sort of point?

If you care about someone, you learn how to pronounce their name properly (accents and speech impediments allowing). It doesn’t matter if their name is Jack or Cillian or Kdjduanaba.

LochJessMonster · 21/04/2020 19:11

I would say ‘Silly-An’ but once correctedI would remember.
Same with Niamh etc

cptartapp · 21/04/2020 19:10

Silly - un

emilybrontescorsett · 21/04/2020 19:10

Killian.
Surely once you have told your family they know what your baby's name is.

7Worfs · 21/04/2020 19:10

Meant to add: it’s a great and memorable name. It’s not an issue that he’ll have to mention correct pronunciation. Lots of people do.

JamesNesbittsBrows · 21/04/2020 19:10

Its obviously Kill ee an.
Just ignore the silliness.

Justmuddlingalong · 21/04/2020 19:09

I can never remember how to pronounce it. Unfortunately I think a lot of people would struggle with knowing tbh.

Peppafrig · 21/04/2020 19:09

I would pronounce that silly an too.

iklboo · 21/04/2020 19:09

Killy-an
