I didn't think this name would be so unpopular

So all throughout my pregnancy, my husband and I kept our baby name choices to ourselves. My baby is now 2 months old, and nearly everyone we have met or spoken to, have mispronounced it. Granted, we haven't seen many people over the last few weeks, so now I'm starting to wonder if it's just my family or if it's really so unheard of?
My baby boy is called Cillian (DH Irish). My whole family pronounce it silly-an even when I've corrected them numerous times.
Can I ask if you would know how to pronounce Cillian? I'm worried I've set him up for a lifetime correcting people.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Wheresthebiffer2 · 21/04/2020 19:24

I would be unsure how to pronounce it.

ShyTown · 21/04/2020 19:23

Honestly I don’t know the name so I’m not sure how it’s pronounced. I’d probably guess Silly-Anne or Kill-Ian but knowing that neither could possible be correct. If I were your family, I’d let you say it first then follow your lead. It’s a bit strange that they’re not accepting your correction and insisting on continuously mispronouncing it. Is it possible that they’re doing it on purpose to make a not very subtle, passive aggressive hint that they don’t like it?

Bingeslayer · 21/04/2020 19:23

Kill-ian,I'm one of those people who have trouble getting pronunciation right but for your family to still be saying it wrong after being corrected makes them arses sorry.
Love the name Smile

Ughmaybenot · 21/04/2020 19:23

Kill-ean. It’s an absolutely lovely name, I really like it. Your family are just being completely ignorant to keep pronouncing it wrong regardless of you telling them. I’d be very annoyed by that.

TheVanguardSix · 21/04/2020 19:23

Killian!
And with the gorgeous Cillian Murphy on our screens, how dare anyone mispronounce it! Grin It's a beautiful name, OP.

LadyGAgain · 21/04/2020 19:23

Kill-eee-an

Beautiful name!!

elQuintoConyo · 21/04/2020 19:22

Kill ian. I thought is was rather a well-known name to be honest.

StrikingMatches · 21/04/2020 19:22

Fantastic name, just keep correcting them. I'd pronounce it with a hard C. It's like any name you have never heard before, people just need to learn how to say it. Those who continue to mis pronounce it are rude, or perhaps not too bright.

BrooHaHa · 21/04/2020 19:22

First time I saw it, I thought Silly-Anne. Now I'd say Kill-Ian. Not great if you're named Anne or Ian!

Boogiewoogietoo · 21/04/2020 19:22

I thought it was Silly-an Blush.

littlefawn · 21/04/2020 19:22

From Northern Ireland so know it's pronounced Killy-an. Just persevere and correct them everytime, they will eventually get it

AllRainbowsAndUnicorns · 21/04/2020 19:21

I know the name, so I know it's Killian.

Don't stress for another minute about this. My friend and I had babies within weeks of each other. We both chose non-English language names, and both our families had trouble with pronunciation until... the children could say their own names.

It's easy to make mistakes (genuine or otherwise) to your face, but three year olds won't take that shit! Grin

JulesM73 · 21/04/2020 19:21

Killi-an I would have said

supercee · 21/04/2020 19:20

The first time fair enough, no excuses not to remember from there on in that it's Killy-an. That's just being rude.

LuluBellaBlue · 21/04/2020 19:20

My name has two pronunciations, it really doesn’t bother me.
Sometimes I correct people, but rarely.

cheesybeano · 21/04/2020 19:20

I'm reading it as killy-in but the c is throwing me off so I would have to ask how its pronounced before making a fool of myself if it was in real life lol

Lucylivesinamushroomhouse · 21/04/2020 19:20

Killian.

I know a couple. Lovely name.

legalseagull · 21/04/2020 19:20

Kill-e-an. Love it. I wanted to call my DS it. His sister has an Irish name (dad is Irish) but we didn't go for it because of English eyes not being able to read it. I myself read it as Silly-an until I heard the correct way. Only in the same way that I first saw Niamh and now read it correctly instinctively though

VettiyaIruken · 21/04/2020 19:19

I would have guessed sillian but once corrected I would pronounce it correctly.

For them to keep mispronouncing it despite having been corrected multiple times can only be deliberate.
You need to ask why they are doing it, given you've told them X amount of times.

And start mispronouncing their names

CurtainWitcher · 21/04/2020 19:19

Why choose a name that so many people would get wrong?

He's in for a life of "Silly-Un" unless you move to Ireland.

HandfulOfFlowers · 21/04/2020 19:18

Do you live in England? Irish names are notoriously difficult for English people to pronounce based on how they are spelled. Cillian is probably easier than some of the others though.

Preggers86 · 21/04/2020 19:18

I would pronounce it killy-an

BuffaloCauliflower · 21/04/2020 19:18

I know it’s Killian with a hard C, and it’s a great name, but even if someone doesn’t surely they only need to hear it once to learn? Your family are being ridiculous and I’d be really firm with them that you won’t tolerate them saying it wrong

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 21/04/2020 19:17

It's a lovely name. I think people struggle to make the hard C sound for some reason but surely once you've heard it you remember it
