okay I love the name Maverick-means nonconformist and I love Chosen for a name but I was looking for names with the same meaning as Maverick and a name similar to Chosen. Also another name that incorporates Angela in it but not Angelina, Angelo, Angel, Angelica, or Angelique i'm looking for something different. And the same thing with the name Robert but not Robbie, Bobbie, Roberta etc.

@MikeUniformMike yes I can see the bad association part, hmm we'll see. and I dont know of any Mavericks but 2 and one is a celeb baby. but they both gave the name for the same reason.

@florascotia2 youre thinking too far into this. hmm I wonder why the name is rising in popularity lol but okay again thanks

Sorry Mike cross-posted.

Acaciaqu · 22/04/2020 15:55

@Actressy right. my child is a representation of me. Its okay guys people name their kids after leaders or names that means leader all the time and no one is bashing them for not living up to it lol

OP I am sorry but facts are facts. The name Maverick could not be more closely linked to the allegedly dishonest cattle-owner and his slave-owning (and worse) ancestors.
As I've said, the history of the name Maverick is shameful.

Also, if you are not a 'follower', I'm honestly not sure why you are keen on a name that is rapidly rising in popularity. If you chose it, wouldn't you just be following the growing number of other parents who have recently decided to use the name?

But your baby your choice, obviously.

Kiki275 · 22/04/2020 15:52

Freedom? Baby has the choice then to follow whatever path they choose x

MikeUniformMike · 22/04/2020 15:52

@Acaciaqu, it is could have not could of.

Call your DS Maverick if you like - your baby, your choice.
Most of us on here don't think it is a name with good associations.

If you have already come across several Mavericks, why not give your child a more unusual name?

Acaciaqu · 22/04/2020 15:52

@allthesharks I totally get what you are saying but not true for me.

OP posts:
Acaciaqu · 22/04/2020 15:49

@GiveMyHeadPeaceffs exactly! lol its more than just a name for my child but thanks for your input

OP posts:
Acaciaqu · 22/04/2020 15:47

@elizabethrose oh wow. yeah I understand what youre saying. Thats kind of why im looking for a name with a similar meaning instead.

OP posts:
Acaciaqu · 22/04/2020 15:45

@florascotia2 thats cute but until there another name with the same meaning and not common, Maverick it is lol

OP posts:
Acaciaqu · 22/04/2020 15:41

@Wolfgirrl none of the Mavericks Ive came across arent top gun anything lol. Its not that crucial. and it means more to me than just the name.

Maverick the slave-owner. Warning - the following link contains some very distressing information. Maverick is mentioned at the bottom of page 1:

archive.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2010/01/18/new_englands_scarlet_s_for_slavery/

It's certainly not a name I'd choose...

Actressy · 22/04/2020 15:38

i'm just going to assume some of you all come from a family/circle of followers lol. Sorry, I didnt.

You get that this baby isn't you, don't you, OP? Whether or not you think the rest of the world are timid sheeple, that's irrelevant to this child, who will almost certainly at some point, think that whatever you believe to be your own 'maverick' qualities are horrifically embarrassing and gruesomely mumsy.

allthesharks · 22/04/2020 15:35

@Acaciaqu The irony is that if your child doesn't conform to your non-conformist ideals then you're going to assume that they're a "follower" and "bland" in some way, but they actually would have rebelled against you.

florascotia2 · 22/04/2020 15:34

Maverick is in origin an American name. According to this graph, it's only been used as a first name in the later 20th century and is currently rising in popularity.

www.behindthename.com/name/maverick/top/united-states

Apparently it was the surname of a Texas rancher who (as an earlier poster has already mentioned) refused to - or deliberately neglected to - brand his young calves - ie did not conform to the cattle-keeping rules of his era.(His rivals said he did this so that he could claim all unbranded cattle as his own - not just his own unmarked animals.)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Maverick

However, the Maverick family was far from being outcast or rebellious. They were some of the earliest Puritan settlers in New England. And some of the first slave-owners.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 22/04/2020 15:33

OP, just because you're not a "follower" and come from a family of not "followers" doesn't mean your child won't be a "follower". I used to be friends with a girl named after a light breeze... there was nothing light or breezy about her and she hated her unusual name to the point that she changed it by deed poll as soon as she could. Name your kid Maverick and hope for the best.

showmethegin · 22/04/2020 15:28

What does that even mean?! Grin

Acaciaqu · 22/04/2020 15:24

@Acaciaqu

Believe me I am not a name snob and can usually be found battling the 'Ottilie and Beatrice' brigade on MN. But I really wouldn't advise you go with Maverick, unless they grow up to be some kind of Top Gun flying ace or a stunt actor there is no way anybody can pull it off. Plus they might get nicknamed Ricky which I imagine is far too plain for your tastes.

There are some other lovely unusual names, but Maverick isnt one of them.

elizabethrose · 22/04/2020 15:20

Absolutely I know it's a name! But it's just my opinion on it. I loved it myself, but I just didn't feel I could name my child it.

Acaciaqu · 22/04/2020 15:18

@elizabethrose you all do realize Maverick is actually a name right lol theres no high expectations over here. Hell I could of been named Maverick, i'm simply not a follower.

OP posts:
elizabethrose · 22/04/2020 15:12

I absolutely love Maverick as a name, but due to all the reasons given above you couldn't possibly use it. I have two girls, and had my youngest been a boy, she would have been the complete opposite to a Maverick. There would be high expectations with a name like that I can imagine.

Actressy · 22/04/2020 15:08

It's not that hard to understand, surely, OP.

You want to give your child as a name a word that means someone who is free-spirited, independent-minded, unorthodox, and unconventional, and you don't understand why Maverick Smith, who grows up to be a timid, easily-swayed people-pleaser who will barely go to the shop on his own and has nightmares about the time he got a parking ticket, might find his name a burden?

florascotia2 · 22/04/2020 15:00

OP I don't know whether you like Biblical names - some are quite popular and fashionable at the moment. Some also have meanings that might just perhaps fit in with your wishes -- for example, Malachi means 'my angel' and Nimrod means 'rebel' (which is sort of the same as 'maverick'). Here is a list:
