Hi everyone, I'm due very soon and we have left it a surprise as to whether it's a boy or girl, but we are really struggling with boys names.
We have an Arab/British background which is making it really hard... I tend to like Western names, husband Arabic names, although he isn't incredibly fond of those either.

He likes the name Ammar, sort or pronounced Amm ma. I don't hate it but I feel it sounds a bit feminine.... Pretty sure we won't use it for a first name but maybe middle.... What do you think of it? The meaning is 'one who brings a place back to life' which is nice.

Adam, Zakariah, Idris, Yunus, Yusuf, Mikael (most of the Biblical names have an equivalent)

Yasmina, Nouriya, Zakia, Zara, Amaal, Hannah, Sara, Souriyah, Zaiynab, Mariam, Rania

I was wondering how you’d pronounce Ammar like Amma then it occurred to me as a Scot that we don’t drop the r at the end Grin

I’ve worked with loads of students from Arabic speaking countries and my favourites are:

Girls: Amal, Nura/Noura, Nadiya, Miral, Alaa, Mashael

Boys: Abdulaziz because you can shorten to either Abdi or Aziz which are both lovely and Saleh

slinkysaluki · 18/04/2020 18:46

I like Soraya for a girl and Omar for s boy

WaktiWapnasi · 18/04/2020 15:57

Idris
Faris
Adam
Malik

HowCowBrownNow · 18/04/2020 15:53

How about Danyaal? Sounds like Daniel.

MikeUniformMike · 18/04/2020 15:41

I'd pick something you like OP.
Assuming the baby will get the father's surname, you should get the last word on the first name.

Hotwaterbottlelove · 18/04/2020 15:40

I've only ever heard Ammar being pronounced with a very clear and usually rolled r at the end. Which I like. I've not come across your version. I don't like it as much.

I like Yuseph, Idrise, Omar, Zain, Zakariah and Haroon

merryhouse · 18/04/2020 15:26

Could you spell it Amar? and maybe lengthen the second a slightly so as to make it obvious it's not a schwa (like Jafar rather than Jaffa).

JillGoodacre · 18/04/2020 14:37

Sorry for typos

JillGoodacre · 18/04/2020 14:36

I'm in the middle east two and work at a nursery.
Love Rayan for a boy and also love Ammar ( Taught two and they were both absolute sweeties ). I also like Meshari as a bays name and Fahad.
For girls I like Badriyah, Loulwah, Ghaliah and Hadiyah

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/04/2020 14:27

Amma means mother in most Asian / middle eastern languages. While it’s considered an appropriate name for a girl (in the same way as Bibi might be) I do think it lacks imagination.

Lordfrontpaw · 18/04/2020 13:12

Amme (Ammah) is Farsi for ‘aunty’ so I’m ammapaws.

spookybitches · 18/04/2020 12:55

I live in Abu Dhabi so my view of Arabic names is probably a lot more in tune than most brits, but Ammar is very much a male name.

I quite like the following
Omar
Zaid
Majed
Khalil

Ohhgreat · 18/04/2020 12:10

Amma is the name of a blue elephant with a jamaican accent in the kids tv program Bing. You'll probably end up watch a lot of Bing so work out if you want you child to share a name with one of the characters!

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/04/2020 12:08

Jonah?

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 18/04/2020 12:06

Aidan
Zak
Samir
Mosa
Haris
Gabriel / Jibriel
Ibrahim (I know a gorgeous little Ibby)

Dinadarius · 18/04/2020 11:46

Hi check out:
www.arabicenglishbabynames.com

It lists all Arabic names that work in English.

Good luck

TheVanguardSix · 18/04/2020 11:44

And there's Rafi.

I love Riyaan. Probably because DS (18) best friend in the world is Riyaan and I love him like my own son.

Omar is probably my favourite Arabic name (male)

TheVanguardSix · 18/04/2020 11:40

Zaki

Treanor · 18/04/2020 11:36

What about Omar?

1forsorrow · 18/04/2020 11:35

How about Ayman, I know an Irish/Arab couple who went for it as it is fine in both cultures although Irish spelling is different.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 18/04/2020 11:34

Someone else asked this a few years ago OP

Elouera · 18/04/2020 11:34

Is the surname Arabic also? Another option is obviously an Arabic middle name.

  • Jasmine, Leyla/Laila, Amara, Amina, Sara (not pronounced Sarah), Zara, Anisa
  • Adam, Omar
FindaPenny · 18/04/2020 11:32

Thanks for the positive opinions... Probably won't show them to my husband 😂

Where is he from - maybe a classic name from there?
