Lottie or Charlotte?

We both really love the name Lottie, but after some Google searches to find a middle name, lots of people seem to be suggesting that it would be best to go with Charlotte as her official name / name on birth certificate.

We don't dislike Charlotte, but also don't also love it. Do you think Lottie is too 'cute' for an adult? Thinking of application forms / interviews etc in the future?

We would only ever call her Lottie.
She would either be,

Lottie Elizabeth (Elizabeth is the name of both of our grandma's)
Lottie Florence
Lottie May

Our last name is Jamieson and we already have a daughter named Evelyn (Grace)

Thanks x

Sorry - I pressed send by accident! Blush try again!
We have decided to have Charlotte on the birth certificate and announce her name as Lottie.
We considered choosing a different name altogether, but I think we'd regret it if we didn't have our Lottie, and to be honest we probably prefer Charlotte over other name choices anyway.
I hadn't really thought about having a mature name like Evelyn and then a 'cute' name like Lottie.

When Evelyn was born we always intended to call her Evie, but haven't since she was a few weeks old. It confused people as to how we wanted her full name pronounced (Ever-lyn rather than Eve- Lyn) and she has been Evelyn ever since!
Thanks again Smile

I dislike pet names used as the official name. Charlotte is beautiful, I know two, both adults , one who has been called Lottie always, but her full name is Charlotte.
Also gives your dd the option later, to use the full name if she prefers it.

Aria20 · 16/04/2020 13:54

My Charlotte is mostly called Charlotte, occasionally Charley or Charley Barley! She does not remotely suit a Lottie. I do know 3 Lottie's and 2 are Charlotte on birth certificate, the other is just Lottie and she's 10 and actually sometimes calls herself Charlotte as she wishes it was her name Grin

Namechangeapril20 · 16/04/2020 13:52

Charlotte and Evelyn are lovely, and can both be shortened to Lottie and Evie which are cute, but still have the option to use their full names if they think it necessary as adults. I always get the childish shortened version of my name, but use my full name for more formal/professional occasions. I've found it nice having both.

LaChatte · 16/04/2020 13:41

Charlotte is lovely, I know two, one went by Lotty as a child then Charly as a teen and now she's reverted back to Lotty as an adult. The other is in France, friends call her Chat (pronounced like the French for cat).

Chirpychirpy3 · 16/04/2020 13:38

Charlotte is beautiful. Lottie is cute for a baby and child but a bit twee for an adult.

FeedMeSantiago · 16/04/2020 13:33

I would put Charlotte on BC. Charlotte Elizabeth is lovely.

I know a little Lottie who is just Lottie, but her sibling has a similar nickname name, think Reggie not Reginald.

As your eldest is Evelyn rather than Evie on her BC I would go Charlotte on BC known as Lottie.

Otherwise Lottie may wish she had the option to be Lottie or Charlotte when she's older, as Evelyn has the choice of Evelyn or Evie.

All the adult Lotties I know have Charlotte on their BC.

SmallPinkBear · 16/04/2020 13:32

Go for Charlotte (which I love and is timeless) and then call her Lottie. It gives her a chance to choose when she is older. Personally I don’t like shortened names on bc, don’t know why, maybe it is because they can sound a bit childish for grown ups.
A friend I went to school with was Jamie until he was about 20 then decided he preferred James- fair enough, and nice that he was able to do that

Herja · 16/04/2020 13:30

I'm Lottie. I do always use Charlotte for official things. It shouldn't happen, but I'm treated better with a more formal name. It was particularly noticeable with mental health workers, social services and benefits workers. The addition of Mrs and a nice, middle class name made an enormous fucking difference. You could hear and see their voice and manner changing. Which is shit, but true.

sashh · 16/04/2020 13:27

I agree with the point about the other child having a 'mature' name.

Although Lottie is usually short for Charlotte you could look at other names, maybe Loretta, or Carlotta.

Toilenstripes · 16/04/2020 13:17

Charlotte. Lottie is awful and twee.

KenDodd · 16/04/2020 13:15

Charlotte.

When people ask her name just say Lottie as that's what she'll be known as.

I have a shortened name as a given name and I really wish my parents had given me the long version, it would have just given me more options about what I want to call myself. I would prefer to be known by the long version or a different shortened version of the name.

My daughter has a long name, she goes by the shortened version, her choice, we call her both. Even in school she's known by the short version and that's what her teachers call her and is put on certificates like 'star of the week' etc.

Lottieskeeper · 16/04/2020 13:13

Our DD was going to be called Lottie with Charlotte on her birth certificate.
But when she was born it was obvious that she suits her full name and it has never been shortened.

If you use Charlotte on the bc she will have options when she's older to use which name suits her best.

queenqueenqueen · 16/04/2020 13:07

I'm sorry but I really dislike the name Lottie, I've never liked it 🙈 definitely go for Charlotte if anything xx

daisypond · 16/04/2020 13:04

Charlotte on the BC. It would be unfair for one child to have a grown up name like Evelyn, not Evie, and the other one not, and not even give the child/adult the option.

AdoptedBumpkin · 16/04/2020 12:34

Charlotte for me.

sageandroses · 16/04/2020 12:30

Charlotte is beautiful and timeless. Lottie is also lovely, but I would always go with Charlotte so she has a choice!

They're both great names so it's a win win situation - for me at least!

87Callista · 16/04/2020 00:34

Charlotte

Astronica · 15/04/2020 23:59

I would prefer to be a Charlotte sometimes called Lottie. However if you plan to only ever use Lottie and you don't love Charlotte, then I think it makes more sense to put Lottie on the bc. I would only put Charlotte on bc if you plan to use it sometimes.
I don't get the barrister thing - I know of judges, lawyers, doctors etc called Poppy, Posie, Sally and Lottie.

MrsP2015 · 15/04/2020 23:26

Charlotte on bc and nn Lottie.

lottiegarbanzo · 15/04/2020 23:17

It can be nice to have a separate formal and informal version of your name, so you can step in and out of your 'at work' and 'with friends' personae. Using a short nn as the given name, leaves the person with nowhere to go. 'Lot', or 'Ti' or... some nn completely unrelated to the actual name.

Jossina · 15/04/2020 23:17

Charlotte definitely. Making her actual name Lottie deprives her of the chance to have any nickname at all. She should be able to choose if she wants people to refer to her by her full name or a more personal one.

LadyLotte · 15/04/2020 23:14

Hiiiii!

I’m a Charlotte who prefers to go by Lotte as an adult. No one finds it weird, I’ve never had anyone question it or laugh.
I work in a Professional role and it’s never been a problem.

Personally I’ve always thought it sounded “a bit posh” or continental as of course it’s an ordinary name in many places.

I say go for it Star

lottiegarbanzo · 15/04/2020 23:13

Lottie is potentially too cute for an adult, yes. It's fine as a nn and with people you're happy to have talk to you informally.

If you love Lottie, there are other long names e.g. Lisalotte, or Carlotta, or you could even use Laetitia or something else.
