Any thoughts on these names? Ideally I'd love to hear why you like or dislike them. Also, if there are 5 in your child's nursery approximately where in the country (or elsewhere) that is. Thank you!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Mrsjayy · 13/04/2020 12:43

I am Scottish I don't know any Cora's old or young .

cerropotosi · 13/04/2020 12:41

Thank you all, I really appreciate the input.. not that it makes it any easier to make a decision!

@fifegirl75 do I take it you're in Scotland? I have heard that Cora is quite popular there - not sure why it's more popular in Scotland than England.. (we're in London but DP is Scottish).

Cora is hideous. A geriatric name and same sound as the kitchen implement, a 'corer'. Laura is gorgeous though OP.

Marahute · 13/04/2020 12:36

I have always loved the name Sophie, but it is VERY popular. We discounted it for DD due to this. It is a beautiful name though. I grew up with a very popular name, so always tried to avoid top 100 names as a personal preference.

I love Cora, definitely not a made up name either. It makes me think of Downton Abbey, but in a good way.

I quite like Laura, but not a name I would personally use. It feels a bit dated to me (I was born in the 80s and went to school with loads of them).

What about Hannah, for a classic name?

Mammyloveswine · 13/04/2020 12:35

Cora is lovely! I recently found out that DH grandma was Clara (she went by her middle name!) and I LOVE it!

cerropotosi · 13/04/2020 12:14

@allaboardthesinkingship whereabouts do you live (approximately) if you don't mind my asking? I've never met a Cora but then I don't know many children Smile

Shocked that people don't think Cora is popular- I know quite a few little Coras! Sophie or Cora is my choice

Mrsjayy · 13/04/2020 12:07

I like Sophie it is a lovely name d2 was maybe going to be a Sophie but a school mum called her baby Sophie first 23 years later im still a bit miffed Blush

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 13/04/2020 12:02
  1. Cora- by a country mile
  2. Sophie
  3. Laura
Deadringer · 13/04/2020 12:01

I don't like Cora at all but i can't explain why, its the sound of it i don't like. I also know 2 women in their 60s called Cora, one of whom i dislike, so perhaps that's it. There are loads of Sophies in my dds school, Sophias too, so that would put me off that one. Laura is nice, but maybe just too ordinary? I prefer Lara.

CrocodileFondue · 13/04/2020 11:57

Not so keen on Cora.
Sophie is a nice name but there are so many of them at the moment, it's quite boring.
Laura is making a comeback, I know two small Lauras, it's a classic and quite refreshing these days.

MrsClutterbucksbaby · 13/04/2020 11:45

I like Laura as it's a name which everyone will recognise and be able to spell but it will be really unusual in her age group and probably the only one at school whereas Sophie is very popular and Cora seems to be trendy at the moment.

queenqueenqueen · 13/04/2020 11:41

I like laura, I think it would be very unique nowa days x

peperethecat · 13/04/2020 10:29

I think they are all nice names but Laura is my favourite. I think it's a classic name that stands the test of time but which is also quite unusual these days. It's not massively popular today like it was in the 1980s but it doesn't scream 1980s either.

Sophie is obviously very popular but if that doesn't bother you then why not?

One thing which puts me off about Cora is that is sounds a little bit like coronavirus, so if it is for a baby born or conceived during the pandemic it might sound like you've named her after it to be funny.

87Callista · 13/04/2020 10:14

Fave to least fave:
Laura
Sophie
Cora.

I'm not keen on Cora I instantly thought of both sweetcorn and an apple core.

SpendAPennyPenny · 13/04/2020 10:01

Is Cora the name of Lady Downton?

I love Laura, Cora is nice too, a bit vintage-chic.

Sophie is lovely but so popular that I don't really hear the nice name, just think it's standard.

KittenVsBox · 13/04/2020 09:47

Cora or Laura.

There are a million Sophie's and Sophia's around here at primary.
I know a 10 yr old Cora, and several adult Laura's.

SE13Mummy · 13/04/2020 09:34

Lovely trio of names. If I was choosing at the moment then I'd go for Laura because there are lots of Sophies round here (SE London) and I expect Cora will indeed be one of those names that identifies a child as being born between 2019 and 2022. Laura is less popular these days - I know a 13-yr-old and 15-yr-old Laura but can't think of any primary aged ones.

bridgetreilly · 13/04/2020 09:32

Laura.

Sophie is fine but very popular. Cora always sounds like a middle aged, brash American woman to me.

Laura is pretty without being cutesy, easy for people to remember and spell, without being 10 a penny at the moment.

funmummy48 · 13/04/2020 09:29

Sophie. Cora makes me think of an Apple corer.

Typhoonmarie · 13/04/2020 09:23

There are an awful lot of Sophies around but it is a nice name
Cora sounds a bit twee and affected-I much prefer Cara.
I associate Laura with people my age but there’s nothing horrible about it. Lara is nice too.

RoseMartha · 13/04/2020 09:15

Laura

fifegirl75 · 13/04/2020 09:14

I have a 6 year old Cora 😊

Lucked · 13/04/2020 09:11

The only thing about Cora is that there are two
pronunciations I know two and they both pronounced differently. One like apple core and the other like coronation. I like the core pronunciation.

Orphlids · 13/04/2020 09:09

All three of your names are very nice, so you can’t go wrong! I know a few little girls named Cora, and I think it’s a little bit in the trendy camp at present. But a pal recently named her daughter Laura, and although it was incredibly popular in the 80s, it was so unusual to hear it given to a baby, that I heard it with fresh ears, and was really surprised by its beauty.
