OP, I know and have known quite a lot of people with less than ordinary names. Most go through a period of not really liking it however, as adults I only know one (out of loads) that has decided it's not for them and have used his middle name instead (though that was still quite unusual - Whittaker). I also know a fair few that have decided to use their more unusual middle name rather than their more ordinary first name.

It's horses for courses. I like names like Jack and Matthew and Sophie and Emma but I haven't used those names myself. I coveted Jack as a name since the early 1980s as I had a boss who went by Jack instead of John and I really liked it. I didn't have DC until 2000 though and it was really popular by then and it didn't feel special for me anymore.

Hope all goes well and you find a name you like. :)

When he's older I imagine his mates will call him Finn anyway. Suggestions Edmund (Ned), Nathaniel (Nate), Josiah (Joss), Silas, Barnaby.

@Iamthewombat @goldenorbspider my point about people only ever saying to my face that its a cool lovely name is that you are only being nasty from the safety of your computer screen and it shouldn't happen. Why do you feel you can behave rudely online yet you wouldn't in person?
As the others have kindly said, I wasn't ever asking for opinions on my current sons name which is why I am frustrated that this thread has taken a turn of opinions of his name, no suggestions of other names. If you don't like the name absolutely fine, but why feel the need to comment and make upset someone? I was not mocking other names, mearly stating I don't think my name is outrageous as some to justify it being mocked so. I have no problem if you want to call your child a common name, I wouldn't comment on someone's thread saying God how boring let's raise a whole world of children with the same name, get an imagination. Because they are lovely names and traditional and we all have our own reasons for choosing them. Let's try and keep this space friendly and supportive. Keep scrolling if it's not your kind of thread.
Thank you @blursula for showing the names heritage, research people should have done before making out it was a made up name or that I was somehow obsessed with a film it featured in.
Thank you @Emthebaker and @Orphlids among others for the support 🙏🏻 and Atticus has to be one of the oldest most traditional names ever so why it might be thought of as so outrageous I don't know. Its from a classic novel after all! I like it :) all comes down to opinion at the end of the day.
Anyway, few helpful suggestions from some so thank you for that, though not sure I'll follow this thread anymore as doesn't seem to be serving it's purpose unfortunately!

I wouldn't comment on anyone's choice to give their child a top ten name. They are top ten for a reason, nice, inoffensive and usually easy to spell and pronounce. I do wonder however if one of the 6 Tom's in DSs scout group (6 out of 24, and not all the 24 were boys) might prefer to be called something a little more unusual.

@Iamthewombat

“ She asked for opinions onnames that were ‘a bit different, like Finnick’ - as if the children’s names were fashion accessories - and that’s what she got. Grow up.”

There are so many layers of stupid in this comment that I don’t know where to begin. Why are you even on this board if you’re not interested in names beyond James and Tom?

FartnissEverbeans · 13/04/2020 12:04

@Iamthewombat

“ Well, no, people tend not to overtly say ‘why did you give him such a silly name?’ IRL to the mother who chose the name. They just think it and express their opinions to other people.

You shouldn’t ask questions online if you can’t deal with other people’s views.”

Wow. Here’s my view: you’re being a dick

I think Finnick is a good name - I immediately thought Hunger Games, but it is one of the more usable names and is sort of out of place in the books.

@Emthebaker “Top Ten” is a bit of a weird name for a baby, tbh.

goldenorbspider · 13/04/2020 09:33

not one person I've told my sons name to has ever said anything other than that's such a cool name I love it.

^^ in real life people will just smile and nod. I've come across some god awful names but would never be so rude as to say. This however is an anon Internet forum. If you want to give an unusual name you just have to get a thicker skin and own it op...like your child will

Blursula · 13/04/2020 09:32

Finnick Origin and Meaning

The name Finnick is a boy's name of English, Anglo-Saxon origin. ... The name is related to Fenwick, an old Anglo-Saxon place name and surname that may be loosely translated as "marshland farm." The names Fenwick and Finnick are also related to Phoenix.

A quick google will tell you this, people. And even if it so happened that it WASN’T a name until the Hunger Games, so bloody what.

OP I think it’s a fabulous name. Not that you need telling.

goldenorbspider · 13/04/2020 09:30

Jeezo, it’s from Hunger Games

^^ couldn't place it! Very memorable. I like Jameson from your list

Orphlids · 13/04/2020 09:23

Yes, I agree, I hate derailing threads, especially as I don’t have any name suggestions, but I do hope the OP knows she has some support, and that not everyone is a smirking “mean girl”. Good luck and congratulations, OP, hope you find a fabulous name for your lovely new baby.

Emthebaker · 13/04/2020 09:18

She literally didn’t ask for opinions and you continue to argue that she did, therefore you have failed to understand what she wrote. It’s quite simple.

No, my son’s name is Top Ten so wrong again, I’m afraid!

If you’ve nothing constructive to say, don’t bother, I think we’ve derailed Elly's thread for long enough! Good luck choosing a name, OP Smile

@Dyrne, if she had “slagged off some names herself” would my words be any less true?

Iamthewombat · 13/04/2020 09:10

please work on your reading comprehension

Here we go. Anybody who says anything you don’t like is unable to read properly or is ‘an unhappy bully’. Or Katie Hopkins. Once more: grow up.

I suppose that your children also have strange names and you, too, hoped that you’d look clever and creative as a consequence? You really should try to be less sensitive if you’re going to post things on the internet.

Dyrne · 13/04/2020 09:04

Orphlids that outrage would work better if the OP hadn’t slagged off some names herself...

Orphlids · 13/04/2020 08:57

Yep, here we go again. Give your child an unusual name? Never! Bully a pregnant stranger over the internet? You bet!

Presumably, the people trying to belittle the OP and make her feel foolish are parents themselves. I would certainly rather be “saddled” with an unusual name than with an unhappy bully as a parent.

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 13/04/2020 08:51

So much outrage OP at people being mean to you.... then you say "its not like I called him Wednesday!" - so it's ok to upset parents with kids capled Wednesday then? Hmm
