Emmeline
Or
Bethan

What do you think of these two names? How many do you know? And which is your favourite? :)

I would pronounce Emmeline as Em-uh-line like Caroline and Madeline...

Ellmau · 12/04/2020 11:35

I imagine a Bethan as big and bouncy, energetic, cheerful, sporty, etc.

My imaginary Emmeline is quieter, sits reading and doing crafts, neat and tidy.

You do have more nickname options with Emmeline - Emmie, Emma, Em, Ems, Lina whereas Bethan you can really only go to Beth or Bethy..

Bezalelle · 12/04/2020 10:23

Emmeline!

Bethan is such a lumpen, unpleasant name.

pilates · 12/04/2020 10:17

Emmeline one of my favourite names

Bingeslayer · 12/04/2020 09:44

Emmeline 💖

finallychangedmyusername · 12/04/2020 09:41

I like both names; strangely I don't actually recall ever having met an Emmeline or Bethan (of any age). Bethan feels more unusual though since Emmeline is close to Emma/Emily/Amelie/Amelia.

MikeUniformMike · 11/04/2020 19:22

@Whatsyourflava, neither have Sharon and Tracey.

Carouselfish · 11/04/2020 19:20

Bethan like Megan always feels unfinished to me.

Emmeline (has not been seen for over a week...A. A. Milne) is quite nice and unusual.

ToyKitchenSink · 11/04/2020 17:50

I know a Bethan aged 40 and a 2 year old Emmaline. Bethan is often called Beth or Betty and the little one is known as Milly.

Whatsyourflava · 11/04/2020 17:43

Bethan is massively unusual these days- outside the top 600 names!!
It’s not been inside the top 50 names whatever for the past 25 years

MikeUniformMike · 11/04/2020 17:11

Not unusual at all, TheVan. About as unusual as Karen or Helen in Wales.

TheVanguardSix · 11/04/2020 16:49

Oh I really like Bethan. What a lovely name. Unusual too!

MikeUniformMike · 11/04/2020 16:28

I know many, many Bethans. It was massively popular in the 1960s, along with Siân and Carys. All are 50+
I don't know any Emmelines.

MikeUniformMike · 11/04/2020 16:13

It's definitely not Beth-anne

It is BETH-an, where an rhymes with can, pan, tan etc not with pun, tun etc.
Emmeline is Emm-uh-leen

Eleri is El-ERR-y. Rhymes with Kerry.

DramaAlpaca · 11/04/2020 14:21

Emmeline, it's lovely.

Bethan pronounced the Welsh way is OK, pronounced the English way it sounds clunky, as someone said above.

mathanxiety · 11/04/2020 09:39

Emmeline (pronounced as BabyMoonPie says).

BabyMoonPie · 11/04/2020 09:16

@ColdTapwater it's pronounced Emma-lean

formerbabe · 11/04/2020 08:45

I prefer Emmeline

Bethan is a very ugly, clunky name to me

ColdTapwater · 11/04/2020 08:44

Bethan is lovely!
Not too sure how to pronounce Emmeline, is it Emmy - Lean? or Em - Lynn?

Hoppyhops · 11/04/2020 08:42

It’s more like ‘Beth-anne’ Or ‘Meg-anne’ in Wales rather than the ‘un’ pronunciation elsewhere. My vote though is for Emmeline. It’s the name of my good friend’s little girl and she is a strong, fierce little lady- really lives up to the name!

Iwanttobeinthesunshine · 11/04/2020 08:37

What’s the Welsh way of pronouncing Bethan? I imagine it sounds prettier in welsh!
Otherwise I prefer Emmeline.

CaffiSaliMali · 11/04/2020 08:33

I prefer Emmeline. Unless you're in Wales Bethan will be mispronounced as "Beth-un" like how Megan is mispronounced as "Meg-un".

bridgetreilly · 11/04/2020 08:14

I like both!

Emmeline probably slightly edges it over Bethan, but I think they're both really nice.

BillHadersNewWife · 11/04/2020 07:28

Eleri. Or Bethan.

Astronica · 11/04/2020 07:24

Bethan
