Hi all! Me again!! 😅

I'm going to keep these threads coming until we find a baby name unfortunately 😅

Thoughts on the name Lorelei?

I like asking for an outsiders opinion as it highlights points about the name myself & hubby wouldn't have thought of!

Thanks again!! ☺️

Love Gilmore girls and LOVE Lorelai. I’d never use it myself but it’s beautiful.

neighbourhoodwitch · 08/04/2020 22:13

Beautiful

babynamelover · 08/04/2020 22:09

It's a very strong name, not one I would personally use but it's okay. I don't think it's particularly fresh or modern though if that's important to you.

FoolsAssassin · 08/04/2020 21:14

I have gone past the rock many times so even though I have watched Gilmore Girls it will always be linked to a rock and siren story for me.

MikeUniformMike · 08/04/2020 21:09

It's pronounced Laurel Eye.

villamariavintrapp · 08/04/2020 20:08

I like it, it does remind me of Gilmore girls. Hate Rory as a nickname though-doesn't seem natural, just copying the character is weird.. I know you didn't suggest that.

Positevibes · 08/04/2020 19:25

I love it 🥰

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 08/04/2020 19:07

Makes me think of shampoo...Timotei, Lorelei...

Cotswoldmama · 08/04/2020 18:27

Love it. It was in my list but it would definitely be one Lori, which I hate, sounds like a middle aged, cuddly mumsy American ladies name.

TheDIsiilusionedAnarchist · 08/04/2020 17:57

I find it a bit fussy and yes Gilmore girls and Mermaid. I’d prefer Laura.

MrsB2019x · 08/04/2020 17:48

I think it’s one of those names that I’d have no idea how to pronounce unless told so she may be called lots of variants 🤷🏻‍♀️

Orphlids · 08/04/2020 16:48

@LockedInMadness then she really would be multitalented, wouldn’t she?

Onemorefuck · 08/04/2020 16:47

I love it. Gilmore Girls doesn’t mean anything to me.
It’s a German name and I love how luscious it sounds.

battlestargalactica · 08/04/2020 16:03

great pogues song

samandpoppysmummy · 08/04/2020 16:02

It makes me think of Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. I think it's a nice name :)

Hoggleludo · 08/04/2020 15:59

How do you say it?

Remember all their lives they will be telling people they said their name wrong and spelt it wrong

I have a pretty strange name and it's the bane of my fucking life

Everyday. All day.

Trust me. Think about it! My daughter had a well known name. People get it wrong all the time and it drives her crazy!

It makes you feel like no one ever really knows you if they can't even get your name right.

safariboot · 08/04/2020 15:53

Nice name, but I worry people might not be able to spell it. My first thought was the Pokemon character.

majesticallyawkward · 08/04/2020 15:50

Love it! I love the Gilmore girls and if ds had been a girl he was going to be lorelei, Rory shortened.

DramaAlpaca · 08/04/2020 15:50

Yesterdayforgotten see florascotia2's post above, which sums up exactly why I don't think Lorelei is a classy name. FWIW the names I find classy tend to be of the timeless and classic variety. Lorelei is neither.

florascotia2 · 08/04/2020 15:46

OP, if you like the name use it. BUT as previous posters have said, it comes with a quite a bit of 'cultural baggage', including (1) a very famous 19th century song about a killer siren, which you can listen to here:
www.deutschland.de/en/the-siren-song-of-the-lorelei

and (2) Marilyn Monroe's performance as Lorelei Lee in the film 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'. Marilyn was sassy and delightful, but the character in the best-selling book on which the film was based was morally much more ambivalent:

MrsCalypsoGrant · 08/04/2020 15:41

Never heard of The Gilmour Girls. My parents very nearly gave me this name in 1975. It's been around a while Grin

MikeUniformMike · 08/04/2020 15:33

Look it up @HKCLARKOP.
It doesn't have good associations.
It makes me think of a stage name for a drag artist, but maybe I'm getting my films mixed up,

SoftBlocks · 08/04/2020 15:32

No.

Yesterdayforgotten · 08/04/2020 15:29

DramaAlpaca it would be interesting to.find out what names you deem as classy...Hmm

DramaAlpaca · 08/04/2020 15:26

Utterly hideous and not what I'd call a classy name. Sorry.
