Thoughts on the name Aurelia?

Morning everyone! :)

What's everyone's thoughts on the name Aurelia?

From first looking at it how would you automatically assume to pronounce it?

We were thinking either ah-RAY-lee-ah or
oh-reh-lee (but I'm sure the second way of pronouncing it would be spent Aurélia?)

Also any suggestions for middle names & nicknames? Our surname is Clark!

Thanks SmileDaffodil

It’s not one I would use but I think it’s very pretty.

I first heard of the name in Love Actually and really liked it then.

ShrimpSymphony · 09/04/2020 01:30

When I was a child I thought this was the most exotic name in the world I must have read it in a book somewhere

NotNowPlzz · 09/04/2020 01:21

Oh or Annaliese

NotNowPlzz · 09/04/2020 01:21

Too frilly, princessy and over feminine. Anastasia is better. Still frilly but sounds more solid and strong.

Staffori · 08/04/2020 23:03

Beautiful name. I know one aged 8, pronounced Aw-RAY-lia.

SirVixofVixHall · 08/04/2020 21:06

I like it, I know two, both in their twenties, one of them is Eastern European.

Zhx3 · 08/04/2020 21:03

I remember where I heard it now, the Portuguese girl in Love Actually, but I see others got there before me!

CheesePleaseLoueese · 08/04/2020 21:01

It means golden

CheesePleaseLoueese · 08/04/2020 21:00

I love it.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 08/04/2020 19:49

Far too fussy for me. I tend to hate all 4 syllable names on girls. Especially if they end in a.

purplepandas · 08/04/2020 16:50

Love it but v close to one of my DD's names so rather biased.

MoveConfused · 08/04/2020 16:47

Aurelia Dobre was the 1987 gymnastics world champion - I adored her growing up and think it’s a beautiful name!

Bitterglitter · 08/04/2020 16:41

Or-re-lee-ah. It's lovely. Reminds me of the Sinhala name for the frangipane or temple tree flower (ah-ra-li-ya)
As for the association with the 2003 love actually character.. don't think your daughter's peers will have a clue about that! And nicknames take care of themselves. I called my eldest pip till the youngest started speaking, then he was phoebo as that's how the little one pronounced his name.

florascotia2 · 08/04/2020 16:26

It's not an English-language name (orginally Latin) and has increased substantially in popularity in Britain since the 'wet girl' episode in the film 'Love Actually' (2003) mentioned by previous poster. names.darkgreener.com/#aurelia

In most of Europe it's pronounced Ow-RAY-li-ah

Astronica · 08/04/2020 11:41

I'm not keen on it. And I've heard several pronunciations - I'd have to ask but would default to Or-RAY-lee-ah.

AuntyAnna · 08/04/2020 11:35

I know a subset Aurelia and James 😃. A beautiful princessy name.

mylittleavalon · 08/04/2020 11:32

Love it!!! It was nearly our dds middle name

HooplaHoopla · 08/04/2020 11:30

toast you are always meeting new people through your life to give your name to, from form filling, receptionists, to ordering takeways and coffees! I've been tempted to give a commonly known name that's simple to spell for the less important ones, but then I feel like a furtive imposter! Grin

Whatsyourflava · 08/04/2020 10:19

I adore the name Aurelia 😍

SleepingStandingUp · 08/04/2020 09:51

Or-ay-lia

It’s beautiful.

littlemeitslyn · 08/04/2020 09:47

Lovely

Littlepond · 08/04/2020 09:44

Looking at it I’d pronounce it Aw-REE-lee-uh

Charlotteli · 08/04/2020 09:43

I think it always makes me think of that slightly wet girl in Love Actually
Me too

Letthemysterybe · 08/04/2020 09:42

I don’t like it at all. I think it sounds like somebody trying to speak with their mouth full. And it reminds me of nipples.
